Purpose: Macular edema including cystoid macular edema is one of the main causes of unfavorable visual outcomes after cataract surgery. The macular thickness and the occurrence of macular edema after uncomplicated cataract surgery was evaluated using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in this study. Methods: Macular map images were taken by OCT before surgery and at 1 week, 1 month, and 2 months postsurgery. The subjects were classified into two groups (group 1, patients with no macular edema; group 2, patients with macular edema). Group 2 was defined as increase in central macular thickness (CMT) by 30% compared with that before surgery. The risk factors for macular edema were evaluated. Group 2 was divided into two subgroups: subclinical macular edema (group 2A) and cystoid macular edema (group 2B) and they were assessed in terms of the clinical course of best-corrected visual acuity and CMT. Results: A total of 376 patients were enrolled in this study, of which 36 (9.57%, group 2) showed macular edema measured by OCT after the surgery. Univariate analysis for group 1 and 2 revealed that intracameral injection of epinephrine during phacoemulsification was associated with the development of macular edema. In group 2, five patients (1.33%) developed cystoid macular edema. Statistically significant differences in the clinical course of CMT were observed at 2 months (201.2 ± 23.1, 250.0 ± 29.8, and 371.0 ± 160.3 in group 1, group 2A, and group 2B, respectively; p < 0.001) and 1 month postoperatively (198.5 ± 23.6, 237.8 ± 40.9, and 314.0 ± 104.5 in group 1, group 2A, and group 2B, respectively; p < 0.001). Group 2B required additional treatment and eventually achieved best-corrected visual acuity of >0.2 with CMT in the normal range. Conclusions: The intracameral injection of epinephrine may cause macular edema after uncomplicated cataract surgery. Examination of CMT using OCT is recommended for the early detection of macular edema.

We report the response process of the Laboratory Analysis Task Force (LATF) for Unknown Disease Outbreaks (UDOs) at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) during January 2020 to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which developed as a UDO in Korea. The advanced preparedness offered by the laboratory diagnostic algorithm for UDOs related to respiratory syndromes was critical for the rapid identification of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and enabled us to establish and expand the diagnostic capacity for COVID-19 on a national scale in a timely manner.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronically relapsing prurtttc inflammatory skin disease. The effective microorganism fermentation extract (EM-X) is an antioxidant cocktail derived from the fermentation of plant material with effective microorganisms, it shows an anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant effects. To find new anti¬inflammatory products for skin inflammatory disease such as AD and contact dermatitis, we produced the effective microorganism fermentation substance (EM-S) by fermentation of medicinal plants with effective microorganisms including photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeast, screened the effects of EM-S on mouse models of acute and chronic inflammatory responses. The effects of EM-S treatment inhibited 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-actate (TPA)-induced ear edema in Balb/c mice. Topically applied EM-S significantly reduced ear thickness, severity score and histological grade in AD-like NC/Nga mouse model by the house dust mite antigen (Dermatophagoides farinse extract) sensitization. In addition, the serum IgE and tissue Th2 chemokine levels were significantly reduced by EM-S. These results demonstrate that topical application of EM-S may be improve the AD-like skin lesion by suppressing IgE and Th2 chemokines.

<P>Birch reduction of aromatic systems by solvated electrons in alkali metal-ammonia solutions is widely recognized as a key reaction that functionalizes highly stable π-conjugated organic systems. In spite of recent advances in Birch reduction with regard to reducing agent and reaction conditions, there remains an ongoing challenge to develop a simple and efficient Birch reaction under mild conditions. Here, we demonstrate that the inorganic electride [Ca<SUB>2</SUB>N]<SUP>+</SUP><SUP>•</SUP>e<SUP>-</SUP> promotes the Birch reduction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and naphthalene under alcoholic solvent in the vicinity of room temperature as a solid-type analogy to solvated electrons in alkali metal ammonia solutions. The anionic electrons from electride [Ca<SUB>2</SUB>N]<SUP>+</SUP><SUP>•</SUP>e<SUP>-</SUP> are transferred to PAHs and naphthalene via alcoholysis in a polar cosolvent medium. It is noteworthy that a high conversion yield to the hydrogenated products is ascribed to the extremely high electron transfer efficiency of 98%. This simple protocol utilizing an inorganic electride offers a direct and practical strategy for the reduction of aromatic compounds and provides an outstanding reducing agent for synthetic chemistry.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

We recently reported the inhibitory effect of an oral administration of a Sophora flavescens Aiton methanol extract on the development of atopic dermatitis in the NC/Nga model mice. Heme oxygenase (HO)-1 has recently emerged as an important cytoprotective enzyme against oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in many cell types. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible mechanism by which prenylated chalcone (PC, 7,9,2',4'-tetrahydroxy-8-isopentenyl-5-methoxychalcone), a natural product isolated from S. flavescens, inhibited cytokine-induced Th2 chemokine expression in human keratinocytes, HaCaT cells. The level of chemokine expression was measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and HO-1 study was performed by Western blot analysis. Interferon-${\gamma}$ (IFN-${\gamma}$) and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$)-induced thymus- and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC/CCL17), macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC/CCL22), cutaneous T-cell attracting chemokine (CTACK/CCL27) expression in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, PC significantly suppressed IFN-${\gamma}$ and TNF-${\alpha}$-induced TARC/CCL17, MDC/CCL22 and CTACK/CCL27 expression via the induction of heme oxygenase (HO)-1. This suppression was completely restored by HO-1 siRNA, suggesting a direct role of HO-1 for the suppressive effect. Furthermore, exogenous CO, but not other end products of HO-1 activity, also suppressed IFN-${\gamma}$ and TNF-${\alpha}$-induced TARC/CCL17, MDC/CCL22 and CTACK/CCL27 expression. These results demonstrate that prenylated chalcone induces HO-1 expression, which in turn HO-1 and/or CO suppresses Th2 chemokine expressions induced by cytokines in human HaCaT cells.

Objective: Gagam-Gongjin-dan (GGD) is an oriental medicinal prescription composited with Cervi parvum Cornu, Corni Fructus, Angelica Gigantis Radix, Lycii Fructus, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Citri Pericarpium, Gastrodiae Rihzoma, Agastachis Herba, Cassiae cortex, Scutellariae Radix and Schisandrae Fructus. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of GGD extract against acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury in mice. Methods: GGD extract was prepared by extracting with methanol for 7 days. The extract was freeze-dried following filtration through vacuum distillation system. The first, we investigated the antioxidant effects of GGD extract on electronic donating ability (DPPH), nitrite (NO) scavenging and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity. The next, we investigated the possible hepatoprotective effect of GGD extract administration against acetaminophen-induced liver injury in mice. Mice were orally administrated with or without GGD extract of different doses (25-100mg/kg/day) one times per day for 6 days. After 3 days, APAP was orally applied with a single dose (400mg/kg). Results:GGD extract increased DPPH, NO and SOD-like activities in dose dependant. APAP treatment significantly increased aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities in plasma. Also, APAP treatment significantly evaluated lipid peroxidation product thiobarbituric reacting substances (TBARS) and depleted some antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, d-aminolevulinate dehydratase and gluthathione peroxidase activities) in liver homogenates compared to the control group. However, the orally administration of GGD extract was able to counteract these effects. Histological studies provided supportive evidence for biochemical analysis Conclusions: These results suggest that GGD extract has a potential antioxidant and hepatoprotective effect against APAP-induced liver injury, these properties may contribute to liver disease care.
Isolation and characterization of novel <i>Ty</i>1-<i>copia</i>-like retrotransposons from lily

<P> Species of the genus Lilium are well known for their large genomes. Although expansion of noncoding repeated DNA is believed to account for this genome size, retroelement del Ty3-gypsy is the only one described so far in the genus Lilium. We isolated Ty1-copia elements from Lilium longiflorum and named them LIREs (lily retrotransposons). The long terminal repeats, primer binding site, and polypurine tract sequences are highly similar among the LIRE elements, indicating that they are in the same lineage. Although the protein-coding regions were highly decayed, the sequence motifs of the integrase, reverse transcriptase, and RNase H domains were identifiable as belonging to the order of Ty1-copia elements. Phylogenetic analysis and primer binding site sequences revealed that these elements belonged to the Ale lineage among the six lineages of plant Ty1-copia elements. Base substitutions in the long terminal repeats estimated that the integration times of the LIRE Ty1-copia elements were between 0.7 and 5.5 mya. In situ hybridization showed that the LIRE elements were present in all the chromosomes of L. longiflorum and L. lancifolium, but absent in centromeres, telomeres, and 45S rRNA sites in both species. The LIRE elements were present very abundantly in species of the genus Lilium, but absent in other genera of the family Liliaceae, implying that the LIRE elements might have contributed to the expansion of the genome in the genus Lilium. </P>
A childhood case of spinal tuberculosis misdiagnosed as muscular dystrophy

Tuberculosis is primarily a pulmonary disease, but extra-pulmonary manifestations are not uncommon, especially in children and adolescents. Ten percent of extra pulmonary tuberculosis localizes to the bones and joints, and 56% of such cases affect the spine. We treated a childhood case of spinal tuberculosis misdiagnosed as muscular dystrophy in a patient without specific constitutional symptoms. We report this case because the patient had an unusual presentation of spinal tuberculosis.
