        Papillon-Lefevre Syndrom의 임상 및 미생물학적 검사와 치료

        The Papillon-Lefevre Syndrome(PLS), a disease with autosomal recessive inheritance, is characterized by diffuse hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles, mostly prepubertal periodontitis and premature loss of primary and permanent dentition. The etiology of the destruction of periodontal tissues has not been completely clarified. In recent years, two main factors are suggested to be responsible for tooth loss : firstly, the presence of gram negative microorganisms in the periodontal pockets of the patients. The other factor suggested is cellular deficiency in chemotaxic and phagocytic function of neutrophylic granulocytes. Resent data suggestes that mechanical debridement in conjunction with antibiotic therapy may be successful in periodontal management of Papillon-Lefevre Syndrome, particularly if administered early. In this study, a Papillon-lefevre syndrome patient was studied clinically, radiologically, histopathologically and microbiologically. 5 years female patient with gingival swelling and destruction of periodontal structure on the whole dentition were examined and palmar and plantar hyperkeratosis were can be seen. On microbiological analysis, Actinobacillus actino-mycetemcomitans was performed. Concurrently, the children recieved extraction of maxillary anterior teeth and construction of removable prosthetis. The combination of professional oral hygiene care and antibiotic therapy improved the dermatologic and peridontal condition.

        The Influence of Depression and School Life on the Quality of Life of Korean Child and Adolescent Patients with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

        Objectives: This study aimed to compare the quality of life reported by patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to the patients’ quality of life as reported by their caregivers. In addition, it aimed to examine how emotional problems, including depression and anxiety, and the severity of the symptoms affect the quality of life reported by the patients and their caregivers. Methods: The patients’ quality of life and their degree of depression and anxiety were measured using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) 4.0 Child Self-Report, the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), and the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale, respectively. The caregivers’ perception of the patients’ quality of life and severity of the ADHD symptoms were measured using the PedsQL 4.0 Parent Proxy Report and the Conners’ Parent Rating Scale (CPRS), respectively. A total of 66 participants completed the survey. The independent-samples t-test, Pearson’s correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Results: The mean score of the PedsQL 4.0 Child Self-Report was significantly higher than the mean score of the PedsQL 4.0 Parent Proxy Report. However, for school function, the PedsQL 4.0 Child Self-Report score was significantly lower than that of Parent Proxy Report. The correlation between the PedsQL 4.0 Child Self-Report and PedsQL 4.0 Parent Proxy Report scores was significant only for emotional function and social function. The multiple regression analysis showed that the PedsQL 4.0 Child Self-Report and PedsQL 4.0 Parent Proxy Report scores were significantly predicted by the CDI and CPRS scores, respectively. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that there are clear differences between the quality of life reported by the patient themselves and that reported by their caregivers. In addition, the findings suggest that it is critical to treat the patients’ accompanying depressive symptoms.

        Effects of Temperature, Salinity, and Diet on the Growth and Survival of the Freshwater Rotifer Brachionus angularis

        We explored the possibilities of using the freshwater rotifer Brachionus angularis as a live food for small fishes cultured in fresh- or brackish waters. Brachionus angularis were collected from a reservoir for isolation and laboratory culture. Length and width of the lorica were $102.3{\mu}m$ and $76.6{\mu}m$, respectively, and those of amictic eggs were $64.4{\mu}m\;and\;47.9{\mu}m$, respectively. When their growth rates were examined at six different temperatures, i.e., 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and $40^{\circ}C$, the highest daily growth rate of 0.801 was observed at $35^{\circ}C$, and growth was lower with decreasing temperature. Adaptation to salinity change was evaluated with two different modes of salinity increase: step-wise elevation lasting for short durations of 5 to 30 min or a long duration of 24 h. With the short duration modes, no individuals survived salinity higher than 10 psu, and the number of live individuals did not increase throughout the experiment. However, in the 24-h elevation, the number of individuals increased when salinity was elevated by 1 to 2 psu per day for the first 2 or 3 days, while no increase in number occurred at salinity increments higher than 3 psu per day. In addition, to assess the effect of different diets, four single-component diets (Chlorella vulgaris, Nannochloris sp., baker's yeast, or dry yeast) and three combination diets (C. vulgaris + Nannochloris sp. + baker's yeast + dry yeast; C. vulgaris 70% + baker's yeast 30%; C. vulgaris 30% + baker's yeast 70%) were used. The specific growth rates of B. angularis fed combination diets were higher than those of rotifers fed any single-component diet, with the highest rate of 0.648 in B. angularis fed a mixture of C. vulgaris, Nannochloris sp., baker's yeast, and dry yeast, and the lowest rate of 0.200 in those fed dry yeast only. Our results indicate that the freshwater rotifer B. angularis can be used for seedling production of both freshwater and brackish-water fishes that require small (less than about $120{\mu}m$) live food during their early stages.

        Effect of Korean red ginseng marc fermented by Bacillus subtilis on swine immunity

        Red ginseng marc is a by-product of Korean red ginseng (panax ginseng CA Meyer) and contains ginsenoside which has pharmacological effects. The Korean red ginseng marc was fermented with Bacillus subtilis (RGMB). This study was carried out to investigate the RGMB effect on swine immunity. The variation of ginsenoside depending on the RGMB fermentation time was analyzed. Swine (Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire) were divided into control group (basic diet) and RGMB group (RGMB 1% diet). One percent RGMB was fed to the RGMB group for 28 days. The biochemical parameters, cytokine and immunoglobulin were analyzed. For 48 hours of fermentation on RGMB, ginsenoside Rb1 had increased 180.94%, Rg3 235.85%. Rg1 wasn't detected before fermentation, but was detected after 48 hours of fermentation. The RGMB had effect of deceasing initial AST concentration $79.33{\pm}12.85U/L$ to $54.00{\pm}14.46U/L$ in final and was significantly lower (P<0.05) than control in final. In final RGMB had significantly lower (P<0.05) ALT concentration of $48.57{\pm}8.26U/L$ comparing with control group of $65.43{\pm}10.31U/L$. RGMB had the effect of significantly decreasing (P<0.05) $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ concentration of $2.44{\pm}1.31ng/mL$, $0.71{\pm}0.36ng/mL$ and $0.51{\pm}0.21ng/mL$. The IgA concentration had significantly increased (P<0.05) in RGMB group of $0.56{\pm}0.06mg/mL$ in final. These results demonstrate that RGMB has effect of increasing immunity and practicable to use as feed additives on swine.

        Primary amelanotic melanoma of the mandibular gingiva

        Oral mucosal melanoma is a very rare type of malignant melanoma, the characteristics of which differ from those of cutaneous melanoma. Primary amelanotic melanoma of the mandibular gingiva, which can invade the mandibular bone, is very rare worldwide. Here, we report a case in which we performed a reconstruction of the mandible and gingiva using the fibula osteocutaneous free flap procedure to treat a patient diagnosed with a primary amelanotic melanoma of the mandibular gingiva. The procedure was successful, and no recurrence was observed 10 months after surgery. Oral mucosal melanoma has a much poorer prognosis and a lower 5-year survival rate than cutaneous melanoma. However, recently, immunomodulatory therapies for mutations in melanocytic lesions have been used effectively to treat the increasing number of patients developing this type of melanoma, thus improving the prognosis of patients with oral mucosal melanoma.

        화석연료의 점진적인 고갈과 그 사용에 따라 발생하는 환경오염 문제의 해결 및 에너지 안보 차원에서 세계 각국은 수소경제로의 이동을 준비 중이며 현재 기술개발을 통해 상업화의 시기를 앞당기는 노력을 하고 있다. 국내에서는 2003년부터 본격적으로 정부 주도의 기술개발 및 실용화 사업을 추진하고 있으며 민간 부문에서는 국내 대기업들을 위주로 해외 전문업체와의 제휴를 통해 차세대 수종 사업으로 수소 연료전치 기술개발을 추진 중이나, 아직까지 기술력이 세계수준에는 이르지 못하고 있는 실정이다. SK는 산업자원부와 에너지관리공단에서 주관하는 대체에너지 기술개발 사업 중 수소연료전지 분야의 '수소스테이션(Hydrogen Station) 국산화 기술개발' 사업의 주관 기관으로서, 독자 기술로 개발한 수소 발생 장치를 중심으로 하여 2007년 수소스테이션 건설을 목표로 연구를 수행하고 있다. 수소스테이션 국산화 기술 개발은 2004년부터 2009년까지 총 5년간에 걸쳐 진행되며, 주관 연구기관인 SK는 수소 발생 장치의 개발과 이를 중심으로 한 수소스테이션의 건설을 총괄하고 있으며, 3개 국책 연구 기관 및 4개 대학이 위탁연구 기관으로 참여하여, 수소 생산 신공정 개발, 촉매 개발, PSA개발 및 탈항 기술 개발 등에 대한 요소 기술의 국산화를 목표로 연구를 진행하고 있다. 본 고에는 2004년부터 현재까지의 주요 연구 결과 및 수소스테이션 건설 추진 현황을 소개하고자 한다.

        Anti-Biofilm Effects of Torilis japonica Ethanol Extracts against Staphylococcus aureus

        The spread of antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive opportunistic pathogen, has increased due to the frequent use of antibiotics. Inhibition of the quorum-sensing systems of biofilm-producing strains using plant extracts represents an efficient approach for controlling infections. Torilis japonica is a medicinal herb showing various bioactivities; however, no studies have reported the anti-biofilm effects of T. japonica extracts against drug-resistant S. aureus. In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of T. japonica ethanol extract (TJE) on biofilm production in methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) KCTC 1927, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) KCCM 40510, and MRSA KCCM 40511. Biofilm assays showed that TJE could inhibit biofilm formation in all strains. Furthermore, the hemolysis of sheep blood was found to be reduced when the strains were treated with TJE. The mRNA expression of agrA, sarA, icaA, hla, and RNAIII was evaluated using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to determine the effect of TJE on the regulation of genes encoding quorum sensing-related virulence factors in MSSA and MRSA. The expression of hla reduced in a concentration-dependent manner upon treatment with TJE. Moreover, the expression levels of other genes were significantly reduced compared to those in the control group. In conclusion, TJE can suppress biofilm formation and virulence factor-related gene expression in MSSA and MRSA strains. The extract may therefore be used to develop treatments for infections caused by antibiotic-resistant S. aureus.
