<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study investigated the feasibility of employing an electro-flotation-oxidation process that employs a pair of boron-doped diamond (BDD) and aluminum (Al) electrodes for electrochemical harvesting of green microalgae (<I>Scenedesmus quadricauda</I>) and treatment of residual pollutants in coke effluent, following an algal-bacterial process. Electro-coagulation-flotation with polarity exchange and with direct electro-flotation at 15mAcm<SUP>−2</SUP> or more for 40min allowed almost complete harvesting of microalgae. Similar harvesting efficiencies were achieved using direct electro-flotation, without electro-coagulation, under different electrical densities because algal biomass formed flocs with the other microorganisms in the activated sludge (AS). These results also indicate that the proposed approach of inducing bioaggregation <I>via</I> floc-forming microorganisms with microalgae is an efficient alternative to chemical flocculation, because it can minimize the release of toxic metal coagulants during electrochemical harvesting. During sequential electro-oxidation, anodic oxidation using the BDD electrode simultaneously mineralized residual soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and thiocyanate (SCN<SUP>−</SUP>), which are not degraded by algal-bacterial mixed cultures. Although the degradation rate of SCN<SUP>−</SUP> was much higher than that of SCOD under certain current densities, further investigation is needed to clarify the mechanism of SCN<SUP>−</SUP> mineralization during BDD-anodic oxidation. To satisfy the standard level of electrical power consumption for wastewater treatment, an electric current density below 15mAcm<SUP>−2</SUP> must be supplied. The proposed electrochemical approach involving bioflocculation could be used as an efficient post treatment of microalgae-mediated process for treating coke wastewater.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Al-BDD electrode was used for harvest of alga and treatment of residual pollutant. </LI> <LI> The bio-flocculated alga was harvested by electro-flotation without Al coagulation. </LI> <LI> The SCOD and SCN<SUP>−</SUP> were simultaneously degraded by anodic oxidation using BDD anode. </LI> </UL> </P>

Bacillus cereus causes food-borne illness through contaminated foods; therefore, its pathogenicity and genome sequences have been analyzed in several studies. We sequenced and analyzed B. cereus strain FORC_021 isolated from a sashimi restaurant. The genome sequence consists of 5,373,294 bp with 35.36% GC contents, 5,350 predicted CDSs, 42 rRNA genes, and 107 tRNA genes. Based on in silico DNA-DNA hybridization values, B. cereus ATCC 14579<sup>T</sup> was closest to FORC_021 among the complete genome-sequenced strains. Three major enterotoxins were detected in FORC_021. Comparative genomic analysis of FORC_021 with ATCC 14579<sup>T </sup>revealed that FORC_021 harbored an additional genomic region encoding virulence factors, such as putative ADP-ribosylating toxin, spore germination protein, internalin, and sortase. Furthermore, in vitro cytotoxicity testing showed that FORC_021 exhibited a high level of cytotoxicity toward INT-407 human epithelial cells. This genomic information of FORC_021 will help us to understand its pathogenesis and assist in managing food contamination.

<P>BACKGROUND: The migration of circulating monocytes to the arterial wall during atherogenesis is largely modulated by activation of the CC chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2), a dominant monocyte chemotaxis receptor. The present study investigated whether 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibition affects CCR2 gene expression and CCR2-dependent monocyte recruitment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Competitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis and flow cytometry showed that simvastatin, an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, dose-dependently reduced monocyte CCR2 mRNA and protein expression. Treatment of 21 normocholesterolemic men with simvastatin (20 mg/d for 2 weeks) decreased CCR2 protein and mRNA expression in circulating monocytes. Promoter and electrophoretic mobility shift assays showed that simvastatin activated a peroxisome proliferator response element in THP-1 monocytes. Moreover, simvastatin-induced CCR2 downregulation was completely reversed by the synthetic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma antagonist GW9662. Simvastatin-treated monocytes showed little chemotaxis movement in response to monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), a specific CCR2 ligand. Treatment of C57/BL6 mice with simvastatin (0.2 microg/g body weight IP, daily for 1 week) inhibited transmigration of CD80+ monocytes to the MCP-1-injected intraperitoneal space. Moreover, few circulating inflammatory cells from simvastatin-treated Sprague-Dawley rats (0.2 microg/g body weight IP, daily for 2 weeks) were recruited to the aortic wall of hypercholesterolemic littermates. CONCLUSIONS: The inhibition of CCR2/MCP-1-dependent monocyte recruitment by simvastatin may prevent excessive accumulation of monocytes in the arterial wall during atherogenesis.</P>

Much effort has been made to find reliable indicators predicting the treatment response in subjects with panic disorder. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of pharmacotherapy on the biofeedback measurement variables in patients with panic disorder. We recruited 38 patients with panic disorder (M; 25, F; 13) being treated in the Samsung Medical Center, who were diagnosed by the ADIS-IV (Anxiety Disorder Interview Schedule-IV), and 33 normal control subjects (M; 21 F; 12). The panic patients were treated with paroxetine for 3 months. All of the subjects were assessed by means of forearm and frontal electromyography (EMG), electrodermal response (EDR), and peripheral skin temperature in the baseline, stress, and recovery phases using the Procomp & Biograph biofeedback instrument. Psychological measures, viz. the Hamilton anxiety rating scale(HAM-A), Hamilton depression rating scale (HAM-D), Beck depression inventory (BDI), Spielberger state-trait anxiety inventory(STAI-S, STAI-T), and Anxiety sensitivity index (ASI), were also assessed. All measurements were performed at the beginning of the study and after 3 months of paroxetine treatment. The panic patients had significantly higher scores on the psychological measures, viz. the HAM-A, HAM-D, BDI, STAI-S, STAI-T, and ASI (all p values<0.001) before treatment. After 3 months of treatment, the panic patients showed a significant improvement as compared to the baseline EDR (z=-2.824, p=0.005), stress EDR (z=-2.691, p=0.007) and recovery EDR (z=-3.416, p=0.001). They also showed a significant improvement in terms of the HAM-A, HAM-D, BDI, STAI-S, STAI-T, and ASI (all p values <0.001) after treatment. The electrodermal response, which is one of the biofeedback measurement variables, was found to be a possible indicator predicting treatment response in panic disorder.
Effects of social supports on burden in caregivers of people with dementia

<B>ABSTRACT</B><B>Background:</B><P>Social support programs for dementia caregivers were widely used in order to reduce care burden. We investigated which types of social supports can reduce psychological and non-psychological burdens of dementia caregivers, and explored the mechanism of those social supports.</P><B>Methods:</B><P>We evaluated 731 community-dwelling dementia patients and their caregivers from the National Survey of Dementia Care in South Korea. We investigated the five types of social supports (emotional support, informational support, tangible support, positive social interaction, affectionate support) using the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey in each caregiver. The mechanisms of specific types of social support on psychological/non-psychological burden were examined using path analysis.</P><B>Results:</B><P>Positive social interaction and affectionate support reduced psychological burden via direct and indirect paths. Tangible support reduced the non-psychological burden via direct and indirect paths. Informational support and emotional support were not helpful for reducing psychological or non-psychological burden. A maximum of 20% of psychological burden could be relieved by positive social interaction and 10.3% of that could be reduced by affectionate support. Tangible support was associated with a 15.1% maximal improvement in non-psychological burden.</P><B>Conclusions:</B><P>In order to reduce caregiver burden in dementia effectively, psychosocial interventions should be tailored to target type of caregiver burden.</P>

N/A Owing to the development of diagnostic techniques and treatment modalities, more and more cases of multiple primary cancers are being discovered and active researches concerning maltiple primary cancers are being done. The mortrality due to cancers of gastrointestinal tract occupies more than two thirds (68.4%) of total number of deathes due to cancers in Korea, but researches on multiple primary cancers concerning gastrointestinal tract are lacking. We reviwed 70 cases of multiple primary cancers concerning gastrointestinal tract, we experienced in the past decade. The ratio of male to female was 3.7:1, the mean age was 52.8 years. From 70 patients with multiple primary cancers, sixty patients had synchronous multiple primary cancers and ten patients had metachronous ones. The frequent sites involved were stomach (51.9%) and liver (21.2%). The most frequent combination of primary and secondary cancer was stomach cancer and primary liver cancer (27%). These results may be contributed to the actual incidence of each cancer, and routine staging work-up of liver for stomach cancer and routine gastroopy for primary liver cancer. In synchronous cancers, majority of the second cancers were found incidentally during routine staging work-up (58.3%) or during operation (8.4%), whereas only 33.3% of second cancers were found due to concomittent symtoms. Thus the incidence of each multiple primary cancer in our study may reflect the relative frequency of each cancer in Korea. In order to determine the true risk of occurrence of multiple primary cancers in Korea, prospective studies based on the large population of community should be conducted.

Paradoxical reaction during antituberculosis therapy is defined as aggravation of preexisting tuberculous lesions or the development of new lesions. A 24-year-old female college student diagnosed with abdominal and pulmonary tuberculosis presented with fever and abdominal pain after having been treated with antituberculosis agents for 4 months. Tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis was suspected on abdominal CT scan and enlarged necrotic abscess was also present. These findings were considered to be due to paradoxical reaction rather than treatment failure during antituberculosis treatment. Although laparoscopic bowel adhesiolysis and abscess drainage were performed, high fever and severe abdominal pain did not improve. However, the patient eventually made a completely recovery after corticosteroid therapy combined with antituberculosis agents. Herein, we report a case of paradoxical reaction which developed in a patient with abdominal and pulmonary tuberculosis during antituberculosis therapy. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2015;65:306-311)
