Atopic dermatitis (AD) and mood disordercomorbidities are typical, but the exact mechanism underlyingtheir interplay has not been clarifi ed. In this study,we aimed to identify the possible mechanisms of anxiety/depressive-like behaviors observed in AD, focusing onmicroglia. AD was induced by Dermatophagoides farinaebody extract (Dfb) in NC/Nga mice and anxiety/depressivelikebehaviors were analyzed by behavioral assessmentssuch as open fi eld test (OFT), tail suspension test (TST),sucrose preference test (SPT), and social interaction. Asclinical symptoms of AD induced, anxiety/depressive-likebehaviors were increased in the OFT and TST and serumglucocorticoid was elevated. AD mice showed an increasedmRNA expression of interleukin-4 (IL-4) in lymph nodesbut decreased arginase 1 (Arg1) mRNA expression withouta change of IL-4 in the hippocampus. In addition, AD miceshowed microglia with a shortened branch of de-ramified form and astrocytes with longer processes and decreasedbranching in the hippocampus, especially in the dentategyrus (DG). The immunofluorescence study of the DGconfi rmed that Arg1 reduction was associated with microglia,but not astrocytes. Furthermore, glucocorticoid receptorreduction, increased 5-HT 1A R, reduced phosphorylatedcAMP response element-binding protein (pCREB),and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expressionwere identifi ed in the hippocampus of AD mice. Notably,an immunofl uorescence study confi rmed that pCREB wasdecreased in the DG of AD mice. Collectively, our data suggestthat the reduced Arg1 positive microglia might contributeto anxiety/depressive-like behaviors via pCREB/BDNFreduction in AD.
Model to estimate survival in ambulatory patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is determined by the extent of the tumor and the underlying liver function. We aimed to develop a survival model for HCC based on objective parameters including the Model for Endstage Liver Disease (MELD) as a gauge of liver dysfunction. This analysis is based on 477 patients with HCC seen at Mayo Clinic Rochester between 1994 and 2008 (derivation cohort) and 904 patients at the Korean National Cancer Center between 2000 and 2003 (validation cohort). Multivariate proportional hazards models and corresponding risk score were created based on baseline demographic, clinical, and tumor characteristics. Internal and external validation of the model was performed. Discrimination and calibration of this new model were compared against existing models including Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC), Cancer of the Liver Italian Program (CLIP), and Japan Integrated Staging (JIS) scores. The majority of the patients had viral hepatitis as the underlying liver disease (100% in the derivation cohort and 85% in the validation cohort). The survival model incorporated MELD, age, number of tumor nodules, size of the largest nodule, vascular invasion, metastasis, serum albumin, and alpha‐fetoprotein. In cross‐validation, the coefficients remained largely unchanged between iterations. Observed survival in the validation cohort matched closely with what was predicted by the model. The concordance (c)‐statistic for this model (0.77) was superior to that for BCLC (0.71), CLIP (0.70), or JIS (0.70). The score was able to further classify patient survival within each stage of the BCLC classification. <I>Conclusion</I>: A new model to predict survival of HCC patients based on objective parameters provides refined prognostication and supplements the BCLC classification. Background/Aims: Metronomic chemotherapy (MET) is frequently administered in comparatively low doses as a continuous chemotherapeutic agent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and overall survival (OS) of MET compared to sorafenib for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT). Methods: A total of 54 patients with advanced HCC and PVTT who had undergone MET were analyzed between 2005 and 2013. A total of 53 patients who had undergone sorafenib therapy were analyzed as the control group. The primary endpoint of this study was OS. Results: The median number of MET cycles was two (1-15). The OS values for the MET group and sorafenib group were 158 days (132-184) and 117 days (92-142), respectively (P=0.029). The Cox proportional-hazard model showed that a higher risk of death was correlated with higher serum alpha fetoprotein level (≥400 mg/dL, hazard ratio [HR]=1.680, P=0.014) and Child-Pugh class B (HR=1.856, P=0.008). Conclusions: MET was associated with more favorable outcomes in terms of overall survival than was sorafenib in patients with advanced HCC with PVTT, especially in patients with poor liver function. Therefore, MET can be considered as a treatment option in patients with advanced HCC with PVTT and poor liver function. (Clin Mol Hepatol 2017;23:128-137)
Simple Evaluation of Listeria monocytogenes Pathogenesis Using Caenorhabditis elegans Animal Model

Listeria monocytogenes is a major cause of serious foodborne illness in the dairy foods. Although Caenorhabditis elegans model is well established as a virulence model of pathogenic bacteria, its application on L. monocytogenes is critically unclear. The objective of this study was to carry out an evaluation of L. monocytogenes toxicity using C. elegans nematode as a simple host model. We found that C. elegans nematodes have high susceptibility to L. monocytogenes infection, as a consequence of accumulation of bacteria in the worms’ intestine. However, L. innocua, which is known to be non-toxic, is not accumulate in the intestine of worms and is not toxic similarly to Escherichia coli OP50 known as the normal feed source of C. elegans. Importantly, immune-associated genes of C. elegans were intensely upregulated more than 3.0-fold when they exposed to L. monocytogenes. In conclusion, we established that C. elegans is an effective model for studying the toxicity of L. monocytogenes and we anticipate that this system will result in the discovery of many potential anti-listeria agents for dairy foods.

Radiologic imaging is important for evaluating extrahepatic bile duct (EHD) cancers; it is used for staging tumors and evaluating the suitability of surgical resection, as surgery may be contraindicated in some cases regardless of tumor stage. However, the published general recommendations for EHD cancer and recommendations guided by the perspectives of radiologists are limited. The Korean Society of Abdominal Radiology (KSAR) study group for EHD cancer developed key questions and corresponding recommendations for the radiologic evaluation of EHD cancer and organized them into 4 sections: nomenclature and definition, imaging technique, cancer evaluation, and tumor response. A structured reporting form was also developed to allow the progressive accumulation of standardized data, which will facilitate multicenter studies and contribute more evidence for the development of recommendations.
Experiences of Public Officials for the COVID-19 Response in the Public Health Center

Aim(s): The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and difficulties of public officials working for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) response in the public health center. Method(s): A qualitative thematic analysis was conducted using data collected from three focus group and individual interviews. Each interview was conducted from July 2020 to January 2021. Eighteen participants (11 nurses, four medical technicians, and three administrative officials) were included. Main questions were overall working conditions, difficult experience about COVID-19 quarantine response, and overall evaluation and improvement plan. Result(s): As a result of this study, three themes, 14 sub-themes, and 46 concepts were derived. The three themes were "poor working conditions", "incomplete quarantine system" and "personal life that endured sacrifice". Participants performed quarantine work in a poor working conditions including overwork, lack of manpower, and handling civil complaints. They said that the quarantine system was incomplete, so detailed quarantine guidelines were frequently changed and information was not well shared, which made it an obstacle to quarantine work. The participants sacrificed their personal lives while doing COVID-19 response work without holidays, and even experienced health problems. Conclusion(s): From the results of this study, it is required that policies to fundamentally improve the working conditions and to recruit expertise for infectious disease. In addition, it is necessary to evaluate the job stress related to COVID-19 response by public officials in public health centers and to systematically investigate the relevance of their job stress to physical, mental health problems and psychosocial stress.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This work offers a promising approach for development of a temperature-responsive colorimetric display platform. For this purpose, uniform thermochromic microcapsules consisting of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) core and a thin polyurethane shell layer were fabricated by conducting in-situ condensation polymerization at the interface of monodisperse CLC-in-water emulsion drops. Colloidal packing-driven microcapsule registry led to exact 2-dimensional positioning of CLC microcapsules into a holes-patterned flexible film stencil. Furthermore, we showed that the designated registry of different color types of CLC microcapsules on the stencil enabled development of a microwriting display technology capable of reversible text representation according to temperature change.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Uniform thermochromic microcapsules consisting of a CLC core and a thin polyurethane shell were produced. </LI> <LI> 2-D patterned array of CLC microcapsules on a flexible stencil led to temperature-responsive color display. </LI> <LI> Designated registry of RGB-colored CLC microcapsules on the stencil enabled development of a microwriting display technology. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
