Searching for a sharp version of the Iliev-Sendov conjecture

The well-known Iliev-Sendov conjecture states that if p(z) is a polynomial of degree n ≥ 2, with all zeroes in the (closed) unit disc, there is at least one zero of the derivative p(z) within unit length from each given zero of the polynomial. The purpose of this paper is to initiate a search for a sharp version of the conjecture and to inspire further work towards identifying necessary subsets of the minimal regions containing at least one zero of the derivative. The approach is to define such a region En(a) for each point a in the unit disc and for each degree n ≥ 2. We establish that E2(a) = {z : |z − a 2| ≤ 12} and En(0) = {z : |z| ≤ 1n−1√n}. Furthermore, we determine that {z : |z − a 2| ≤√12−3|a|26 } ⊆ E3(a) if |a| ≤ 1, and that {z = (x, y) : (x − a 2 )2 + 11−a2 y2 ≤ 14} ⊆ En(a) if 0 ≤ a < 1. However, the main purpose of this paper is to introduce and motivate the definition of the minimal regions En(a), and to inspire further work towards identifying these regions.

Serum levels of the pro-inflammatory apolipoprotein CIII (apoCIII) are increased in type-1 diabetic (T1D) patients and when β-cells are exposed to apoCIII they undergo apoptosis, which can be prevented by an antibody against apoCIII. We have previously investigated the BB rat, an animal model that develops a human-like T1D at the age of around 60 days, and found that apoCIII was also increased in sera from pre-diabetic rats and this promoted β-cell death. Lowering apoCIII with an oligonucleotide antisense during a phase of the pre-diabetic period prolonged the time to onset of T1D. In order to find other ways to lower apoCIII we in this study tested non-alcoholic red wine with medium and high concentrations of polyphenols and the lipid-lowering drug, fenofibrate, both reported to decrease the expression of apoCIII by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors. Pre-diabetic BB-rats were treated orally for one month prior to the expected onset of diabetes with the two different wines or fenofibrate. None of the treatments prevented or prolonged the time to onset of diabetes and the expression of apoCIII was unaffected in this animal model for T1D. However, it must be emphasized that this does not exclude that other species can show a response to these substances.
A Path to Ultranarrow Patterns Using Self-Assembled Lithography

<P>The templated self-assembly of block copolymer (BCP) thin films can generate regular arrays of 10−50 nm scale features with good positional and orientational accuracy, but the ordering, registration and pattern transfer of sub-10-nm feature sizes is not well established. Here, we report solvent-annealing and templating methods that enable the formation of highly ordered grating patterns with a line width of 8 nm and period 17 nm from a self-assembled poly(styrene-<I>b</I>-dimethylsiloxane) (PS-PDMS) diblock copolymer. The BCP patterns can be registered hierarchically on a larger-period BCP pattern, which can potentially diversify the available pattern geometries and enables precise pattern registration at small feature sizes. Real-time detection of acetylcholine release from the human endocrine pancreas

Neurons, sensory cells and endocrine cells secrete neurotransmitters and hormones to communicate with other cells and to coordinate organ and system function. Validation that a substance is used as an extracellular signaling molecule by a given cell requires a direct demonstration of its secretion. In this protocol we describe the use of biosensor cells to detect neurotransmitter release from endocrine cells in real-time. Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing the muscarinic acetylcholine (ACh) receptor M3 were used as ACh biosensors to record ACh release from human pancreatic islets. We show how ACh biosensors loaded with the Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> indicator Fura-2 and pressed against isolated human pancreatic islets allow the detection of ACh release. The biosensor approach is simple; the Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> signal generated in the biosensor cell reflects the presence (release) of a neurotransmitter. The technique is versatile because biosensor cells expressing a variety of receptors can be used in many applications. The protocol takes ?? h.

This case study introduces the integration of Mathematics and Arts within a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) project, focusing on the exploration of human body proportions and body-image perceptions. Through a project-based learning approach, a team of Swedish teachers collaboratively designed and implemented a curriculum that not only illustrates the Maths-Art relationship but also addresses the broader social and cultural implications of body image. This paper outlines the project's methodology, emphasising hands-on activities, critical thinking, and transformative learning experiences that connect real-life and artistic perspectives. By engaging students in a comprehensive exploration of body-image through historical, cultural, and mathematical lenses, the project aimed to foster a healthier understanding of body diversity. The transdisciplinary approach adopted by the teachers at Tångvalla School in Sweden serves as a model for integrating STEAM education in addressing contemporary educational and societal challenges.
Knowledge and Perceptions about Colorectal Cancer in Jordan

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer globally. In Jordan, it is the number one cancer among men and the second most common cancer among women, accounting for 15% and 9.4% respectively of all male and female diagnosed cancers. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and perceptions about colorectal cancer risk factors, signs and symptoms in Jordan and to provide useful data about the best modes of disseminating preventive messages about the disease. Materials and Methods: A stratified clustered random sampling technique was used to recruit 300 males and 300 females aged 30 to 65 years without a previous history of CRC from four governorates in Jordan. A semi-structured questionnaire and face to face interviews were employed. Descriptive and multivariate analysis was applied to assess knowledge and perceptions about CRC. Results: Both males and females perceived their CRC risk to be low. They had low knowledge scores about CRC with no significant gender association (P=0.47). From a maximum knowledge score of 18 points, the median scores of males and females were 4 points (SD=2.346, range 0-13) and 4 points (SD=2.329, range 0-11) respectively. Better knowledge scores were associated with governorate, higher educational level, older age, higher income, having a chronic disease, having a family history of CRC, previously knowing someone who had CRC and their doctor's knowledge about their family history of CRC. Conclusions: There is a low level of knowledge about CRC and underestimation of risk among the study participants. This underlines the need for public health interventions to create awareness about the illness. It also calls for further research to assess the knowledge and perceptions about CRC early detection examinations in Jordan.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The insulin receptor is an important regulator of metabolic processes in the body, and in particular of glucose homeostasis, including glucose uptake into peripheral tissues. Thus, insulin administration is an effective treatment for diabetes, which is characterized by chronic elevation of blood glucose. However, insulin is not only a metabolic regulator, but also functions as a growth hormone. Accordingly, studies of long-term insulin administration and of the hyperinsulinemia associated with type 2 diabetes have raised concerns about possible increases in the risks of cancer and atherosclerosis, due to excessive stimulation of cell proliferation. Interestingly, some insulin receptor ligands that have been developed based on a peptide, an antibody, and an aptamer selectively have metabolic effects exerted through the insulin receptor but do not cause significant cellular proliferation. Although these ligands therefore have potential as anti-diabetic drugs for advanced diabetes care, the mechanism whereby they specifically activate the insulin receptor is still unclear. Recently, studies of the structure of the insulin receptor have progressed considerably, and have provided further mechanistic understanding of insulin receptor activation. Based on this progress, we propose a mechanistic model of this specificity and discuss the potential for the development of novel anti-diabetic drugs that would not have the adverse effects caused by excessive mitogenic action.</P>
