<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>BACKGROUND</B></P><P><B>Hybrid materials are being developed with improved separation properties as pervaporation (PV) membranes. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) containing surface‐functionalized fumed silica (SiO<SUB>2</SUB>) nanoparticles in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were investigated for PV recovery of 1‐butanol. The MMMs were characterized through water contact angle, pure 1‐butanol sorption, degree of swelling and 1‐butanol partition coefficients</B>.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P><B>Most MMMs outperformed pure PDMS for the PV of 1.5% (w/v) 1‐butanol at ≤40°C. Functionalized SiO<SUB>2</SUB> fillers enhanced the affinity of 1‐butanol to the MMMs (K<SUB>BuOH</SUB><SUP>G</SUP>) which consequently improved 1‐butanol permeability more than that of water. Thus the MMMs exhibited better separation efficiencies, but those with octyl‐functionalized (Si‐DMOS) and phenyl‐functionalized SiO<SUB>2</SUB> (Si‐DMPS) exhibited the best PV performance. Filler loading of 10 wt% Si‐DMOS and Si‐DMPS were found optimal for the PV performance of both MMMs. With temperature, component fluxes of both MMMs increased whereas permeability decreased. Based on PV separation index, both MMMs performed better than PDMS at ≤60°C, Si‐DMPS/PDMS MMM outperformed PDMS even at 70 °C</B>.</P><P><B>CONCLUSION</B></P><P><B>Improved performance of PV membranes was achieved when nonporous functionalized SiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoparticles, especially when Si‐DMPS is used as the filler. The MMMs developed may also be useful for organic compounds recovery from dilute aqueous solutions. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry</B></P>
Correlating the Fineness and Residual Gum Content of Degummed Hemp Fibres

It is well known residual gum exists in degummed or rotted hemp fibers. Gum removal results in improvement in fiber fineness and the properties of the resultant hemp yams. However, it is not known what correlation if any exists between the residual gum content in retted hemp fibers and the fiber fineness, described in terms of fiber width in this paper. This study examined the mean width and coefficient of variation (CV) of fiber width of seventeen chemically rotted hemp samples with reference to residual gum content. The mean and CV of fiber width were obtained from an Optical fiber diameter analyser (OFDA 100). The linear regression analysis results show that the mean fiber width is directly proportional to the residual gum content. A slightly weaker linear correlation also exists between the coefficient of variation of fiber width and the residual gum content. The strong linear co-relation between the mean of fiber width and the residual gum content is a significant outcome, since testing for fiber width using the OFDA is a much simpler and quicker process than testing the residual gum content. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) reinforces the OFDA findings. SEM micrographs show a flat ribbon like fiber cross-section hence the term \"fiber width\" is used instead of fiber diameter. Spectral differences in the untreated dry decorticated skin samples and chemically treated and subsequently carded samples indicate delignification. The peaks at $1370cm^{-1}$, $1325cm^{-1}$, $1733cm^{-1}$, and $1600cm^{-1}$ attributed to lignin in the untreated samples are missing from the spectra of the treated samples. The spectra of the treated samples are more amine-dominated with some of the OH character lost.cter lost.

This paper proposes a wind power generation and management system with a s cheme of cloud-based monitoring. The all - in function of the designed prototype is to manage and monitor the components such as voltages, current, and power that supplies the battery (BESS). The generated voltage from the wind turbine passes through a relay switch, which is controlled by the Arduino GizDuino IOT 644 microcontroller module, and it traverses through DC/DC power converter for voltage regulation. In effect, the arduino microcontroller provides a decision whether it will charge the battery energy storage system or not depending on the sensed voltage output of the source that will charge the battery. In addition, it sends data to cloud for parameter measurements. The all over strategy of the designed control scheme provides the system with improved and better dynamic performance.

This alternative can be evaluated and offered to patients that suffer from a firm esophageal occlusion before a major proce-dure such as surgery can be considered. Thus, decreasing major surgery complications and improving the quality of life.

A new dynamic feedback tracking control method of desired velocity and current profiles for permanent magnet synchronous motors, without the additional synthesis of disturbance observers and parametric identification methods, is introduced. Proportional-Integral (PI) feedback is properly extended for both efficient planned motion tracking control and simultaneous fast disturbance estimation. In this fashion, design of additional high-gain disturbance observers becomes unnecessary. This is, on-line dynamic load uncertainty estimation is simultaneously achieved by proposed tracking control implementation. Analytical and numerical results prove the efficient and robust tracking performance of controlled system variables on planned smooth motion profiles and a high-accuracy estimation of unknown high-order variable disturbances.

Traditional methods used for the analysis and design of power systems, like power fl ow studies (PFS), do not consider any uncertainties. For example, when there is a high penetration of wind power plants (WPPs), whose raw material is intermittent. In this paper is proposed a graphical probabilistic representation (GPR) based on multi-objective performance index (MPI) to assess the impact of the WPPs penetration in power systems. This representation is applied to the southeastern network of Mexico, where there is increasing penetration of WPPs. Besides, a comparative study is presented, with and without a static var compensator (SVC) device connected to the mentioned network, to evaluate the eff ects of shunt compensation in the point of common coupling (PCC) with WPPs. The results of this comparison are discussed using the GPR proposed. The results show that GPR can be utilized as a useful tool to represent a considerable amount of information in a clear, compact, and single visual representation

This article presents the design and implementation of a bioelectronic knee integrated into a transfemoral mechanical prosthesis manufactured in 3D printing. This device is made to improve the human gait cycle in the lifting, rocking, and support phases. For its implementation, control subsystems were integrated for the spatial variables and the conditioning of native muscle signals generated by the contractions of the vastus and biceps of the stump of a patient with trans-femoral amputation. The readings of the position and angular velocity signals were made through an interface adapted to the non-amputated limb as a response pattern. The scope of this article is defined by the reading, monitoring, control, and improvement of knee movements in a bioelectronic prosthesis in the phases of the human gait cycle. Finally, the importance of reducing the cost of the device is highlighted through the optimization of resources, construction materials, and electronic elements, with a low cost value.

This paper presents a mathematical model that allows representing the optical behavior of a solar parabolic dish concentrator and the thermal performance of a cavity receiver. A procedure and a graphical method for the design of dish/cavity systems are proposed. A parametric study of the main geometric variables is performed and the influence of climate variables on the thermal behavior of the system coupled to a Stirling engine is analyzed. The model considers errors of solar collector, intercept factor, reflected and emitted radiation,conduction, and convection heat losses. For the validation of the model, the results obtained were compared with theoretical and experimental results reported in the literature. The calculation of the radiation losses, emitted and reflected from the receiver presented errors of up to 14%, and the average error for the rest of the thermal losses, interception factor and the absorber’s temperature, was less than 3%. These results show that the proposed model can be used with sufficient certainty to design and optimize solar dish collectors with cavity receivers.
