This paper shows that if the terms of trade are determined endogenously for an open economy with a non-traded good sector, emigration results in favorable changes in the terms of trade for the remaining residents of the country (non-migrants). These changes and the gift of non-removable capital resources to non-migrants may offset the welfare loss which results from the loss of trading opportunity the non-migrants had with the migrants before migration occurred. Thus, the non-migrants may gain in welfare as a result of migration.
Unempolyment Reduction in the Prersence of a Rural Based Free Trade Zone : Some Policy Impolications

Within the framework of an economy characterized by open urban unemployment a` la Harris-Todaro, we analyze the effectiveness of a rural based Free Trade Zone(FTZ), established through a subsidy to either domestic or foreign capital, in alleviating unemployment and increasing national income. We establish sufficient conditions under which the establishment of a rural based FTZ leads to a reduction in the absolute level of unemployment in the economy even though it may worsen national income. We also analyze the effect of policy interventions in both the rural and the urban regions of the post-FTZ economy on labor allocations across regions, the absolute level of unemployment and on national income. The purpose of this study was both to explore the current special education system and expect the vision of special education in Nepal. The aim of the NSEP is to make provision of education and training for all children with special needs in order to achieve their fullest possible social integration, full participation and individual development. The NSEP is largely a program approach, which has been given a due place in the national system of education. Disability is a global phenomenon; it needs concerted effort at the global front for a global action to fight against this global problem. The need is there to translate the ultimate goal of special needs education into a school for all and eventually, a society for all.

Curcumin and curcumin containing polyherbal preparations have demonstrated anti-microbial and antiviral properties in pre-clinical studies. Till date no therapeutic intervention has been proved to be effective and safe in clearing established cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The present study evaluated the efficacy of Basant polyherbal vaginal cream (containing extracts of curcumin, reetha, amla and aloe vera) and of curcumin vaginal capsules to eliminate HPV infection from cervix. Women were screened by Pap smear and HPV DNA test by PCR. HPV positive women without high grade cervical neoplasias (N=287) were randomized to four intervention arms to be treated with vaginal Basant cream, vaginal placebo cream, curcumin vaginal capsules and placebo vaginal capsules respectively. All subjects were instructed to use one application of the assigned formulation daily for 30 consecutive days except during menstruation and recalled within seven days of the last application for repeat HPV test, cytology and colposcopy. HPV clearance rate in Basant arm (87.7%) was significantly higher than the combined placebo arms (73.3%). Curcumin caused higher rate of clearance (81.3%) than placebo though the difference was not statistically significant. Vaginal irritation and itching, mostly mild to moderate, was significantly higher after Basant application. No serious adverse events were noted.

Arsenic (As), which is ubiquitous throughout the environment, represents a major environmental threat at higher concentration and poses a global public health concern in certain geographic areas. Most of the conventional arsenic remediation techniques that are currently in use have certain limitations. This situation necessitates a potential remediation strategy, and in this regard bioremediation technology is increasingly important. Being the oldest representativse of life on Earth, microbes have developed various strategies to cope with hostile environments containing different toxic metals or metalloids including As. Such conditions prompted the evolution of numerous genetic systems that have enabled many microbes to utilize this metalloid in their metabolic activities. Therefore, within a certain scope bacterial isolates could be helpful for sustainable management of As-contamination. Research interest in microbial As(III) oxidation has increased recently, as oxidation of As(III) to less hazardous As(V) is viewed as a strategy to ameliorate its adverse impact. In this review, the novelty of As(III) oxidation is highlighted and the implication of As(III)- oxidizing microbes in environmental management and their prospects are also discussed. Moreover, future exploitation of As(III)-oxidizing bacteria, as potential plant growth-promoting bacteria, may add agronomic importance to their widespread utilization in managing soil quality and yield output of major field crops, in addition to reducing As accumulation and toxicity in crops.

Background: A population-based cervical cancer screening program using visual inspection with acetic acid was launched in Maldives in 2014. Our study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of women in relation to risk factors of cervical cancer, early detection of the disease and its prevention. Materials and Methods: The questionnaire based survey was conducted among 20 to 50 year old women, systematically sampled to represent three regions of Maldives. Trained investigators interviewed a total of 2,845 women at home. Results: The prevalence of the risk factors of cervical cancer like early age at marriage and childbirth, multiple marriages, multiple marriages of the husbands, and multiple pregnancies was high. More women knew about breast cancer than cervical cancer. Even among the small number of women who knew of cervical cancer, only 34.6% had the knowledge of at least one early symptom. Very few women knew that the cancer could be prevented by any test. Only 6.2% of the women reported having ever undergone a Pap smear. Many women had the misconception that cervical cancer was infectious. In Maldives the younger women have high literacy rate due to the policy of universal free education and those with higher levels of education had improved knowledge of cervical cancer and its risk factors. The prevalence of risk factors also reduced with improved literacy. Conclusions: Awareness about risk factors and prevention of cervical cancer is limited among Maldivian women in spite of having high exposure to some of the risk factors. A universal literacy program in the country has helped to improve the knowledge of cervical cancer prevention and to reduce the exposure to various risk factors in the younger population.

Biological response modifiers (BRMs) can alter interactions between the immune system and cancer cells to boost, direct, or restore the body's ability to fight disease. Mice with ethylnitrosourea- (ENU) induced leukemia were here used to monitor the therapeutic efficacy of lipopolysaccaride (LPS), Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) and sheep erythrocytes (SRBC). Flow cytometry based CD34+ positivity analysis, clonogenicity, proliferation and ultrastructure studies using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of stem cells in ENU induced animals with and without BRMs treatment were performed. BRMs improved the stem-stromal relationship structurally and functionally and might have potential for use as an adjunct in human stem cell therapy.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are supposed to be the key players of several acute and chronic diseases, and also for progressive aging process. Eicosanoids, especially prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}$ (PGF$_{2{\alpha}}$) and $F_2$-isoprostanes are endogenous compounds that are involved both in physiology and the above mentioned pathologies. These compounds are biosynthesized mainly from esterified arachidonic acid through both enzymatic and non-enzymatic free radical-catalysed reactions in vivo, respectively. They have shown to possess potent biological activities in addition to their application as biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation. Recent advancement of methodologies has made it possible to quantify these compounds more reliably and apply them in various in vivo studies successfully. Today, experimental and clinical studies have revealed that both PGF$_{2{\alpha}}$ and $F_2$-isoprostanes are involved in severe acute or chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatic diseases, asthma, risk factors of atherosclerosis, diabetes, ischemia-reperfusion, septic shock and many others. These evidences promote that assessment of bioactive PGF$_{2{\alpha}}$ and $F_2$-isoprostanes simultaneously in body fluids offers unique non-invasive analytical opportunity to study the function of these eicosanoids in physiology, oxidative stress-related and inflammatory diseases, and also in the determination of potency of various radical scavengers, anti-inflammatory compounds, drugs, antioxidants and diet.
