Yalow와 Berson이 insulin을 측정할 수 있는 radioimmunoassay(RIA)을 개발한 이래 특히 생명과학 연구분야에 끼친 영향은 가히 혁명적이라 할 수 있겠다. 이에 따란 지난 30여년 동안 면역분석법(immunoassay)의 기술도 다양하게 개발, 응용되어 왔다. 특히 최근에는 방사성 동위원소가 갖고 있는 문제점을 보완하기 위해 화학발광체, 형광물질, 효소 등과 같은 비방사성 물질을 이용한 면역분석법이 다양하게 개발되어 생명과학 분야의 기초연구는 물론 실제 임상에 널리 이용되고 있다. 그러나 아직까지 미량성분의 생리활성물질의 절대적인 양을 정확하게 측정할 수 있는 방법은 엄격히 말해 아직 존재치 않는다. 따라서 본 강의에서는 지금까지 개발된 면역분석법들의 원리와 그 장·단점들에 대해 고찰하였고 특히 가장 최근에 개발되어 활용되기 시작한 Time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay의 연구동향과 그 전망, 또한 idiotype항체 이용과 비경쟁성 반응원리에 의한 새로운 면역분석법의 개발에 관해서도 검토하였다.
Relationship between Telomere Maintenance and Liver Disease

Previous studies have established a correlation between increasing chronological age and risk of cirrhosis. This pattern raised interest in the role of telomeres and the telomerase complex in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. This review aims to summarize and analyze the current understanding of telomere regulation in hepatocytes and lymphocytes and how this ultimately relates to the development of liver fibrosis. Notably, in chronic viral hepatitis, telomere shortening in hepatocytes and lymphocytes occurs in such a way that may promote further viral replication while also leading to liver damage. However, while telomere shortening occurs in both hepatocytes and lymphocytes and ultimately results in cellular death, the mechanisms of telomere loss appear to be initiated by independent processes. The understanding of telomere maintenance on a hepatic and immune system level in both viral and non-viral etiologies of cirrhosis may open doors to novel therapeutic strategies.
Current Issues in English Language Education in Asia: A Personal Perspective

This paper discusses a number of key issues in English language education in a variety of Asian countries. The points presented arise from the author’s experience of teaching and researching in collaboration with a wide range of academic colleagues-applied linguists - working in these contexts. The issues discussed include: the aims of language teaching (linguistic, communicative and intercultural competence); current methodological approaches (for example, task-based language teaching); ‘native’ and ‘non-native English-speaking teachers of the language;, the teaching of English to young learners; and the introduction of programmes of English medium instruction in schools and universities. Each issue will be preceded by a short historical sketch, as the author believes that the present can only be understood in the light of the past, and the key points will be illustrated by data from case studies from research conducted by the author and/or his colleagues. The paper will conclude by emphasising the need for appropriate research to be conducted before curricular innovations are introduced in school systems or universities. In particular, such research should explore the opportunities and constraints to curriculum reform in the specific contexts in which it is intended to take place. Importantly, such research should also take into account the knowledge, beliefs, and practices of practitioners whose responsibility it would be to implement the proposed changes. Wherever possible, research should be conducted by, or with, the practitioners themselves, in order that the can be empowered to become educational knowledge-makers rather than the consumers of other people’s theories and ideologies.
Nonlinear Time Reversal Focusing and Detection of Fatigue Crack

This paper presents an experimental study on the detection and location of nonlinear scattering source due to the presence of fatigue crack in a laboratory specimen. The proposed technique is based on a combination of nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy(NEWS) and time reversal(TR) focusing approach. In order to focus on the nonlinear scattering position due to the fatigue crack, we employed only one transmitting transducer and one receiving transducer, taking advantage of long duration of reception signal that includes multiple linear scattering such as mode conversion and boundary reflections. NEWS technique was then used as a pre-treatment of TR for spatial focusing of reemitted second harmonic signal. The robustness of this approach was demonstrated on a cracked specimen and the nonlinear TR focusing behavior is observed on the crack interface from which the second harmonic signal was originated.
Measurements of Sub- and Super Harmonic Waves at the Interfaces of Fatigue-Cracked CT Specimen

Nonlinear harmonic waves generated at cracked interfaces are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A compact tension specimen is fabricated and the amplitude of transmitted wave is analyzed as a function of position along the fatigued crack surface. In order to measure as many nonlinear harmonic components as possible a broadband Lithium Niobate ($LiNbO_3$) transducers are employed together with a calibration technique for making absolute amplitude measurements with fluid-coupled receiving transducers. Cracked interfaces are shown to generate high acoustic nonlinearities which are manifested as harmonies in the power spectrum of the received signal. The first subharmonic (f/2) and the second harmonic (2f) waves are found to be dominant nonlinear components for an incident toneburst signal of frequency f. To explain the observed nonlinear behavior a partially closed crack is modeled by planar half interfaces that can account for crack parameters such as crack opening displacement and crack surface conditions. The simulation results show reasonable agreements with the experimental results.
