Prolonged orotracheal intubation of preterm infants in pediatric intensive care units can lead to various complications in oral cavities, including morphological deformations of the palate and maxillary arch as well as developmental dental defects. This report describes 9-month-old boy with a deformity due to 9 months of orotracheal intubation. The patient was a preterm infant born at 28 weeks’ gestation with an extremely low birth weight. He received assisted mechanical ventilation because of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Concave alveolar ridge notching and palatal grooving were observed along the fixed position of the tube. Additionally, constriction of the palatal width was detected. A simple splint was fabricated to protect the deformed alveolar ridge and palate and restore its original shape. The appliance was used for 2 months before and after extubation and the deformed area returned to its normal contour. In preterm infants with long intubation periods, a good prognosis without complications may be expected with the use of this simple appliance.

Patients in a comatose state can present neuropathologic mastication in relation to endotracheal tube intubation. This causes dental or oral soft tissue injuries, which are destructive and distressful to patients and caregivers. This report describes 2 cases with dental injuries due to uncontrolled masticatory movements in the pediatric intensive care unit. In the first case, a 3-yearold boy has been hospitalized for the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome by mechanical ventilation. Adduction and sucking of the lower lip induced lacerations on the labial mucosa of the lower lip. In the second case, a 9-year-old boy has been hospitalized for the management of pneumonia. The patient exhibited clenching around the tube holder. As a result, both maxillary central incisors were luxated in the labial direction. In both cases, removable splints were fabricated to minimize perioral damages. Approximately 3 to 4 weeks after using appliances, dental and oral soft tissue injuries improved, and neuropathologic chewing ceased. Considering the limitations of patients in the pediatric intensive care unit, the use of a simple and noninvasive device may improve prognosis.

Multiple caries in a pediatric patient often requires dental treatment under general anesthesia, especially when the patient is suffering from a systemic disease. The patient was a 6-year-old boy with Marfan syndrome and needed extensive dental treatment. Marfan syndrome is an inherited disorder resulting from mutations in Fibrillin-1 gene. Patients are known to have mainly cardiovascular, ocular, and musculoskeletal problems. Although clinical symptoms of the syndrome are age-realted, thus hindering early diagnosis of the disease in young children, our patient had been confirmed by a gene study at a younger age. Medical history of the patient revealed moderate to severe mitral regurgitation and aortic root dilatation, which required mitral valve replacement surgery with a mechanical valve. As a result, the patient was taking warfarin post-operatively and changes in medication had to be made before the dental treatment. Also, prophyalctic antibiotics had to be given before the treatment for prevention of (to prevent the) infective endocarditis. With careful control of the medications and bleeding tendency, general anesthesia and the treatment were done successfully without any complications.

Deposited Marine Debris(DMD) can negatively affect marine ecosystems, fishery resources, and maritime safety and is mainly detected by sonar sensors, lifting frames, and divers. Considering the limitation of cost and time, recent efforts are being made by integrating underwater images and artificial intelligence (AI). We conducted a comparative study of You Only Look Once Version 5 (YOLOv5) and You Only Look Once Version 7 (YOLOv7) models to detect DMD from underwater images for more accurate and efficient management of DMD. For the detection of the DMD objects such as glass, metal, fish traps, tires, wood, and plastic, the two models showed a performance of over 0.85 in terms of Mean Average Precision (mAP@0.5). A more objective evaluation and an improvement of the models are expected with the construction of an extensive image database.
