Imaging method for changes in venous dynamics: a preliminary study

The present study proposes a novel functional magnetic resonance venography (fMRV) method to examine changes in venous dynamics that are difficult to detect with commonly used MRV methods such as susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI). We used a fast gradient echo imaging sequence, known as a time-resolved angiography with interleaved stochastic trajectories, at 7T MRI; it achieves a high temporal resolution of 3 s, which enables detection of dynamic changes in blood oxygenation within the cerebral veins. Twelve healthy individuals participated in this functional imaging study. SWI was also performed using optimized parameters for comparison with fMRV. We measured the average signal change from representative veins in the visual cortex between resting and stimulation conditions. fMRV showed signal changes between the resting and the stimulation conditions in venous vessels more clearly than SWI. Dynamic changes in venous vessel oxygenation signals were observed in the 3 s measurement windows, and these changes showed an ∼3 s delay at the onset and offset of stimulation. The average increase in the venous signal intensity was 6.86±0.82% (mean±SEM) during stimulation relative to the resting condition. This study shows that fMRV can directly visualize individual venous vessel blood oxygenation changes during visual stimulation, suggesting that it could be a useful method to investigate venous dynamics induced by visual stimulation.

<P>Biosensor systems for wearable continuous monitoring are desired to be developed into conformal patch platforms. However, developing such patches is very challenging owing to the difficulty of imparting materials and components with both high stretchability and high performance. Herein, we report a fully stretchable microfluidics-integrated glucose sensor patch comprised of an omnidirectionally stretchable nanoporous gold (NPG) electrochemical biosensor and a stretchable passive microfluidic device. A highly electrocatalytic NPG electrode was formed on a stress-absorbing 3D micropatterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate to confer mechanical stretchability, high sensitivity, and durability in non-enzymatic glucose detection. A thin, stretchable, and tough microfluidic device was made by embedding stretchable cotton fabric as a capillary into a thin polyurethane nanofiber-reinforced PDMS channel, enabling collection and passive, accurate delivery of sweat from skin to the electrode surface, with excellent replacement capability. The integrated glucose sensor patch demonstrated excellent ability to continuously and accurately monitor the sweat glucose level.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
Clinical Features of Polyarteritis Nodosa in Korea

<P>Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a systemic vasculitis characterized by multi-organ involvement with protean manifestations. We evaluated the clinical features of PAN in Korea. Twenty-seven patients were diagnosed as PAN at Seoul National University Hospital between January 1990 and July 2003. The male-to-female ratio was 1.7:1 and mean age at onset (±SD) was 47.4±20 yr. Their presenting features at diagnosis were similar to those reported previously, i.e., myalgia, muscle weakness or leg tenderness (70%), fever (52%), weight loss >4 kg (44%), skin rash (44%), peripheral edema (33%), abdominal pain (33%), and arthralgia/arthritis (30%). However, the prevalence of testicular pain or tenderness was higher (24%) than reported previously and only three (11.5%) had HBsAg positivity without liver enzyme elevation. Nine patients (33%) had a five-factor score (FFS) of 2. Fourteen patients (52%) responded to treatment, 2 patients relapsed and 4 died within 1 yr of diagnosis. During a median follow-up of 55.5 months, three of the four PAN-related deaths had an initial FFS of 2. The clinical features of PAN were not significantly different from those reported previously. However, testicular pain or tenderness was more frequent and patients with a high FFS tended to have a poorer prognosis.</P>
