Acoustic Species Identification of Korean Myotis Bats (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae)

Kwang Bae Yoon,M. Mafizur Rahman,Yung Chul Park 강원대학교 산림과학연구소 2016 Journal of Forest Science Vol.32 No.1

We investigated structure and intensity of 267 echolocation calls that were collected from the five Korean Myotis species (M. nettereri, M. petax, M. ikonnikovi, M. macrodactylus and M. formosus). All the Myotis species produced typical FM call pattern with similar echolocation call shapes and outer shapes, producing steep, downward frequency-modulated calls. A pulse has two harmonies, which consist of the first harmony with wider bandwidth and the second harmony with narrower bandwidth. The PF of the first harmony is higher than that of the second harmony. The typical FM call structure, with two harmonies and wide bandwidth, might be highly related to fast flying and wide screening in the dense forests. In classification of the echolocation calls by DFA, most of calls from the five species could be well correctly classified. All calls of M. nettereri (100% of 17 calls), M. formosus (95.5% of 22 calls) and M. ikonnikovi (85.7% of 70 calls) could be well discriminated from those of the other species, whereas calls of M. petax and M. macrodactylus could be discriminated by 70.4% of 98 calls and 76.7% of 60 calls, respectively. Our results indicate that the five Korean Myotis species can be well identified by the echolocation calls with high correct classification by DFA.

Thiosulfate Oxidation and Mixotrophic Growth of Methylobacterium goesingense and Methylobacterium fujisawaense

        ( R. Anandham ),( P. Indiragandhi ),( M. Madhaiyan ),( Jong Bae Chung ),( Kyoung Yul Ryu ),( Hyeong Jin Jee ),( Tong Min Sa ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2009 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.19 No.1

The mixotrophic growth with methanol plus thiosulfate was examined in nutrient-limited mixotrophic condition for Methylobacterium goesingense CBMB5 and Methylobacterium fujisawaense CBMB37. Thiosulfate oxidation increased the growth and protein yield in mixotrophic medium that contained 150mM methanol and 20mM sodium thiosulfate, at 144 h. Respirometric study revealed that thiosulfate was the most preferable reduced inorganic sulfur source, followed by sulfite and sulfur. M. goesingense CBMB5 and M. fujisawaense CBMB37 oxidized thiosulfate directly to sulfate, and intermediate products of thiosulfate oxidation such as polythionates, sulfite, and sulfur were not detected in spent medium and they did not yield positive amplification for tested soxB primers. Enzymes of thiosulfate oxidation such as rhodanese and sulfite oxidase activities were detected in cell-free extracts of M. goesingense CBMB5, and M. fujisawaense CBMB37, and thiosulfate oxidase (tetrathionate synthase) activity was not observed. It indicated that both the organisms use the "non-S4 intermediate" sulfur oxidation pathway for thiosulfate oxidation. It is concluded from this study that M. goesingense CBMB5, and M. fujisawaense CBMB37 exhibited mixotrophic metabolism in medium containing methanol plus thiosulfate and that thiosulfate oxidation and the presence of a "Paracoccus sulfur oxidation" (PSO) pathway in methylotrophic bacteria are species dependant.

      • Phase I/II study of S-1 combined with weekly docetaxel in patients with metastatic gastric carcinoma

        Park, S R,Kim, H K,Kim, C G,Choi, I J,Lee, J S,Lee, J H,Ryu, K W,Kim, Y-W,Bae, J-M,Kim, N K Cancer Research UK 2008 The British journal of cancer Vol.98 No.8

We designed a phase I/II trial of S-1 combined with weekly docetaxel to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and recommended dose (RD) and to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity in metastatic gastric carcinoma (MGC). Patients with measurable disease received S-1 orally b.i.d. on days 1–14 and docetaxel intravenously on days 1 and 8 every 3 weeks. In phase I (n=30), each cohort received escalating doses of S-1 (30–45 mg m−2 b.i.d.) and docetaxel (25–40 mg m−2); MTD was 45 mg m−2 b.i.d. S-1/35 mg m−2 docetaxel and RD was 40 mg m−2 b.i.d. S-1/35 mg m−2 docetaxel. Dose-limiting toxicities included grade 3 elevated liver enzymes, gastric perforation, grade 3 diarrhoea/fatigue, febrile neutropenia with grade 3 anorexia/fatigue, and neutropenic infection with grade 3 stomatitis/anorexia. In phase II (n=52), the overall response rate was 66.7% (95% confidence interval (CI): 53.8–79.6%) and the median time to progression and overall survival were 6.5 months (95% CI: 4.9–8.1) and 13.7 months (95% CI: 9.9–17.5), respectively. The most common grade 3/4 toxicity was neutropenia (29.4%), and febrile neutropenia/neutropenic infection occurred in 19.6% of patients. Non-haematological toxicities were generally mild. There was one treatment-related death due to pneumonitis. S-1 combined with weekly docetaxel is active in MGC with moderate toxicities.British Journal of Cancer (2008) 98, 1305–1311. doi:10.1038/sj.bjc.6604312 www.bjcancer.com Published online 25 March 2008

      • Riboflavin-mediated RDX transformation in the presence of Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 and lepidocrocite

Bae, S.,Lee, Y.,Kwon, M.J.,Lee, W. Elsevier Scientific Pub. Co 2014 Journal of hazardous materials Vol.274 No.-

The potential of riboflavin for the reductive degradation of a cyclic nitramine, hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), was investigated in the presence of lepidocrocite and/or Shewanella putrefaciens CN32. RDX reduction by CN32 alone or CN32 with lepidocrocite was insignificant, while 110μM RDX was completely reduced by CN32 with riboflavin in 78h. The transformation products identified included nitroso metabolites, formaldehyde, and ammonium, indicating the ring cleavage of RDX. UV and visible light analysis revealed that riboflavin was microbially reduced by CN32, and that the reduced riboflavin was linked to the complete degradation of RDX. In the presence of both CN32 and lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH), 100μM-riboflavin increased the rate and extent of Fe(II) production as well as RDX reduction. An abiotic study also showed that Fe(II)-riboflavin complex, and Fe(II) adsorbed on lepidocrocite, reduced RDX by 48% and 21%, respectively. The findings in this study suggest that riboflavin-mediated RDX degradation pathways in subsurface environments are diverse and complex. However, riboflavin, either from bacteria or exogenous sources, can significantly increase RDX degradation. This will provide a sustainable clean-up option for explosive-contaminated subsurface environments.

Electronic Band Structure and Photocatalytic Activity of M-Doped TiO2(M=Co and Fe)

        M. G. Ha,H. G. Kim,B. H. Shon,E. D. Jeong,박혁규,J. H. Jung,이재성,M. S. Won,S. W. Bae 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.49 No.III

Cobalt- or iron-doped TiO2 nanocrystals were fabricated by the hydrothermal synthesis method. The electronic structure and optical properties of the materials were studied by using XRD, UVDRS, and the FP-LAPW (Full-Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave) method. The bandgap energy of Co- and Fe-doped TiO2 obtained by FP-LAPW and UV-DRS was ca. 2.6 and 2.5 eV, respectively. These doped materials absorbed visible light and exhibited photocatalytic activity for oxidative decomposition of CH3Cl to CO2 under visible light irradiation ( > 420 nm). However, only Fe-doped TiO2 showed the activity for CH3Cl degradation to CO2, probably due to its higher oxidation potential, as the FP-LAPW calculation indicated.

Probiotic Characterization of Acid- and Bile-tolerant Lactobacillus salivarius subsp. salivarius from Korean Faeces

Bae, H.C.,Nam, M.S.,Lee, J.Y. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2002 Animal Bioscience Vol.15 No.12

This study was conducted to investigate lactobacillus salivarius subsp. salivarius having probiotic properties to be used as the health adjuncts with fermented milk products. Acid- and bile-tolerant lactobacillus salivarius subsp. salivarius was isolated with lactobacilli MRS broth from faeces of 80 healthy persons (infants, children and adults). It was used as a probiotic strain in fermented milk products. The pH of fermented milk decreased from pH 6.7 to 5.0 and titratable acidity increased from 0.3% to 1.0% by L. salivarius subsp. salivarius (isolation strain 20, 35, and 37), when incubated for 36 h at 37$^{\circ}C$. The number of viable cell counts of fermented milk was maximized at this incubation condition. The SDS-PAGE evidenced no significant change of casein but distinct changes of whey protein were observed by isolated L. salivarius subsp. salivarius for titratable acidity being incubated by 0.9-1.0% at 37$^{\circ}C$. All of the strains produced 83.43 to 131.96 mM of lactic acid and 5.39 to 26.85 mM of isobutyric acid in fermented products. The in vitro culture experiment was performed to evaluate ability to reduce cholesterol levels and antimicrobial activity in the growth medium. The selected L. salivarius subsp. salivarius reduced 23-38% of cholesterol content in lactobacilli MRS broth during bacterial growth for 24 h at 37$^{\circ}C$. All of the isolated L. salivarius subsp. salivarius had an excellent antibacterial activity with 15-25 mm of inhibition zone to E. coli KCTC1039, S. enteritidis KCCM3313, S. typhimurium M-15, and S. typhimurium KCCM40253 when its pH had not been adjusted. Also, all of the isolated L. salivarius subsp. salivarius had partial inhibition zone to E. coli KCTC1039, E. coli KCTC0115 and S. enteritidis KCCM3313 when it had been adjusted to pH 5.7. The selected strains were determined to have resistances of twelve antibiotic. Strains 27 and 35 among the L. salivarius subsp. salivarius showed the highest resistance to the antibiotics. These results indicated that some of the L. salivarius subsp. salivarius (strain 27 and 35) are considered as effective probiotic strains with a potential for industrial applications, but the further study is needed to establish their use as probiotics in vivo.
