Long noncoding RNAs in cancer cells

Bach, Duc-Hiep,Lee, Sang Kook Elsevier 2018 Cancer letters Vol.419 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) has recently been investigated as key modulators that regulate many biological processes in human cancers via diverse mechanisms. LncRNAs can interact with macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, or protein to exert cellular effects and to act as either tumor promoters or tumor suppressors in various malignancies. Moreover, the aberrant expression of lncRNAs may be detected in multiple cancer phenotypes by employing the rapidly developing modern gene chip technology and bioinformatics analysis. Herein, we highlight the mechanisms of action of lncRNAs, their functional cellular roles and their involvement in cancer progression. Finally, we provide an overview of recent progress in the lncRNA field and future potential for lncRNAs as cancer diagnostic markers and therapeutics.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> lncRNAs might act as tumor promoters or tumor suppressors in cancer development. </LI> <LI> lncRNAs are suggested as diagnostic and prognostic markers in cancer progression. </LI> <LI> lncRNAs are key regulators of pathways involving each of the hallmarks of cancer. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Expanding hyperbranched polyglycerols on hydroxyapatite nanocrystals via ring-opening multibranching polymerization for controlled drug delivery system

        Bach, L.G.,Islam, Md.R.,Lim, K.T. North-Holland 2013 Materials letters Vol.93 No.-

Hyperbranched polyglycerols (HPG) were covalently grown from hydroxyapatite nanocrystals (HAP NCs) via surface-initiated anionic ring-opening multibranching polymerization (SI-AROMP) of glycidol. HAP NCs were first functionalized by (3-mercaptopropyl)-trimethoxysilane to get HAP-SH NCs. Then, SI-AROMP of glycidol was accomplished to afford HPG grafted HAP NCs (HPG-g-HAP). The structure and morphology, and charge behavior of HPG-g-HAP nanocomposites were investigated by FT-IR, TGA, TEM, SEM, XRD, and zeta potential measurements. A model drug ibuprofen (IBU) was employed to evaluate the drug loading/release behavior of the HPG-g-HAP nanocomposites. In vitro IBU release profile suggested the nanocomposites as a promising drug delivery system (DDS).

      • Development of a GPS/INS integrated navigation system for model aircraft

        Bach-Phi Duong,Vinh-Hao Nguyen 제어로봇시스템학회 2014 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2014 No.10

This paper addresses the development of an integrated navigation system based on MEMS inertial sensors and GPS for model aircraft. The objective of this paper is to propose a loosely coupled GPS/INS integration approach using Extended Kalman filter to estimate aircraft’s position, velocity, and attitude. Special attention is paid to the computational performance of the algorithm and the handling of GPS outages. The simulation results based on a typical high dynamic flight trajectory validate that the proposed filter is applicable to flight navigation.

        EVOLUTIONARY STATUS OF 85 PEGASI

        Bach, K.,Lee, J.,Demarque, P.,Kim, Y.-C. IOP Publishing 2009 The Astrophysical journal Vol.703 No.1

<P>We have investigated the evolutionary status of the visual binary 85 Peg (HD 224930) using a high-resolution spectroscopic analysis and the astrometric calibration of the stellar parameters. In spite of well-determined stellar parameters from HIPPARCOS astrometry and from spectroscopy, 85 Peg has for a long time revealed peculiar properties when attempts have been made to combine an evolutionary model with observation. There has been a chronic problem of the mass ratio of the two components when comparing 85 Peg's dynamical properties to the photometric magnitude difference. Moreover, 85 Peg has been suspected to have unique characteristics in its chemical composition. In order to determine accurate spectroscopic abundances, we have obtained high-resolution echelle spectra for 85 Peg. From our elemental analysis, we found that 85 Peg is alpha-enhanced with respect to the scaled solar abundance by a factor of 2. We then produced, within the framework of the standard stellar theory, grids of stellar model using the most recent observational results. To avoid many-fold degeneracy among physical quantities, a statistical minimization test was carried out between theoretical model grids. Enforcing consistency between the modeling and statistical constraints, we derived a reliable set of physical parameters and confirmed the trinarity of the system. In the context of asteroseismology, the theoretical frequency spectrum of 85 Peg was calculated. 85 Peg A is expected to have a first order spacing Delta nu similar to 165 mu Hz at the reference frequency nu(0) = 790 mu Hz.</P>

      • Process modeling and optimization for torrefaction of forest residues

        Bach, Quang-Vu,Skreiberg, Øyvind,Lee, Chul-Jin Elsevier 2017 ENERGY Vol.138 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This work aims to build a comprehensive biomass torrefaction model, which can provide a wide range of information essential for industrialization and commercialization of the process. Norwegian forest residue (birch branches) was chosen as feedstock. The model is capable of presenting detailed distributions of main and by-products from the torrefaction process. In addition, important fuel properties (ultimate analysis and heating value) of the main solid product after torrefaction can be predicted. The model is validated and simulation results show good agreement with available experimental data in the literature. Reduction in mass and energy yields as well as improvement in heating value of torrefied biomass with increasing torrefaction temperature are observed. Trends for carbon, oxygen and hydrogen contents are also consistent with other experimental works. Moreover, overall energy consumption and process energy efficiency can be estimated from the model. It reveals that drying accounts for 76–80% of the total heat demand. Furthermore, the process energy efficiency reduces with increasing temperature, thus torrefaction at high temperatures is not advisable. More importantly, process optimization shows that optimal conditions for torrefaction of birch branches are 30 min holding time and a temperature between 275 and 278 °C.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Completed torrefaction model has been built in the Aspen Plus and validated by experimental data. </LI> <LI> The model is capable of providing the distributions of both the torrefied biomass and by-products. </LI> <LI> The model reveals that drying accounts for 76–80% of the total heat demand. </LI> <LI> A temperature within 275–278 °C is optimal for a torrefaction time of 30 min for birch branches. </LI> </UL> </P>

Efficacy of Ginseng Supplements on Fatigue and Physical Performance: a Meta-analysis

Bach, Hoang Viet,Kim, Jeongseon,Myung, Seung-Kwon,Cho, Young Ae The Korean Academy of Medical Sciences 2016 JOURNAL OF KOREAN MEDICAL SCIENCE Vol.31 No.12

<P>We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy of ginseng supplements on fatigue reduction and physical performance enhancement as reported by randomized controlled trials (RCTs). RCTs that investigated the efficacy of ginseng supplements on fatigue reduction and physical performance enhancement compared with placebos were included. The main outcome measures were fatigue reduction and physical performance enhancement. Out of 155 articles meeting initial criteria, 12 RCTs involving 630 participants (311 participants in the intervention group and 319 participants in the placebo group) were included in the final analysis. In the fixed-effect meta-analysis of four RCTs, there was a statistically significant efficacy of ginseng supplements on fatigue reduction (standardized mean difference, SMD = 0.34; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.16 to 0.52). However, ginseng supplements were not associated with physical performance enhancement in the fixed-effect meta-analysis of eight RCTs (SMD = −0.01; 95% CI = −0.29 to 0.27). We found that there was insufficient clinical evidence to support the use of ginseng supplements on reducing fatigue and enhancing physical performance because only few RCTs with a small sample size have been published so far. Further lager RCTs are required to confirm the efficacy of ginseng supplements on fatigue reduction.</P>

A novel photoluminescent nanohybrid of poly(ε-caprolactone) grafted Mg/Al layered double hydroxides and Tb3+ ions: Synthesis and characterization

        Bach, L.G.,Islam, Md.R.,Cao, X.T.,Park, J.M.,Lim, K.T. Elsevier Sequoia 2014 JOURNAL OF ALLOYS AND COMPOUNDS Vol.582 No.-

This paper demonstrates a systematic study of the synthesis and characterization of the hybrid of Mg-Al layer double hydroxides (LDHs), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), and terbium ions (Tb3+). The hybrid LDH-g-PCL-Tb3+-1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) was prepared by the combination of ring opening polymerization (ROP), click chemistry, and coordination chemistry. First, LDHs with a molar ratio of Mg/Al=2 were prepared by the co-precipitation method, which was subsequently functionalized with (3-chloropropyl) trimethoxysilane in order to introduce azide groups through the reaction of chlorine with sodium azide. Meanwhile, the acetylene functionalized PCL was prepared by ROP of ε-CL, followed by esterification of the hydroxyl groups using succinic anhydride. The click reaction of alkyne-PCL and N3-LDHs successfully afforded LDH-g-PCL, which was coordinated with Tb3+ ions in the presence of Phen. The structure and properties of the nanohybrids were investigated by FT-IR, XPS, EDS, SEM, and TGA analyses. The data indicate the coordination of Tb3+ ions with LDH-g-PCL nanohybrids. The content of Tb3+ ions in the LDH-g-PCL-Tb3+-Phen complex was calculated to be 8.7% (w/w). The LDH-g-PCL-Tb3+-Phen complexes showed four emission bands with high fluorescence intensity centered at 489nm (5D4→7F6), 546nm (5D4→7F5), 586nm (5D4→7F4) and 623nm (5D4→7F3) with excitation at 328nm (3F6→5G6). The stability of LDH-g-PCL-Tb3+-Phen complexes under UV irradiation was high, and no leaching effect was observed.
