        Associations between serum haptoglobin concentration and peri- and postpartum disorders, milk yield, and reproductive performance in dairy cows

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We determined the associations between serum haptoglobin concentration and peri- and postpartum disorders, milk yield, and reproductive performance in dairy cows. Furthermore, associations between haptoglobin and some blood metabolites were also investigated. We collected blood from 112 Holstein cows 1 week postpartum to measure serum haptoglobin and metabolite/enzyme (aspartate aminotransferase [AST], total bilirubin [T-bilirubin], total cholesterol [TCH], non-esterified fatty acids [NEFA], and β-hydroxybutyrate [BHBA]) concentrations. Cows were divided into two groups based on their haptoglobin concentrations: a low-HP group (<100 µg/mL, <I>n</I> = 72) and a high-HP group (>100 µg/mL, <I>n</I> = 40). The incidence of peri- and postpartum disorders (dystocia, retained placenta, metritis, and endometritis) was higher (<I>P</I> < 0.05–0.01) in the high-HP group than in the low-HP group, whereas milk yield during the first 2 months postpartum was lower (<I>P</I> < 0.05–0.01) in the high-HP group than in the low-HP group. Moreover, the probability of conception by 210 days postpartum was also lower (hazard ratio: 0.55; <I>P</I> < 0.05) in the high-HP group than in the low-HP group. Serum AST, T-bilirubin, NEFA, and BHBA concentrations were higher in the high-HP group than in the low-HP group (<I>P</I> < 0.05–0.01), whereas TCH concentration was lower (<I>P</I> < 0.01) in the high-HP group than in the low-HP group. In conclusion, our results indicate that high serum haptoglobin concentration 1 week postpartum was associated with a greater incidence of peri- and postpartum disorders, and reductions in milk yield and reproductive performance<B>,</B> in dairy cows. It was also associated with high serum AST, T-bilirubin, NEFA, and BHBA concentrations, but low TCH concentration.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Serum haptoglobin correlates with health and performance in dairy cows. </LI> <LI> High haptoglobin is associated with peri- and postpartum disorders. </LI> <LI> Haptoglobin concentration is associated with milk yield and reproductive performance. </LI> <LI> High haptoglobin concentration relates to energy deficit and impaired liver function. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Effects of Cu and B addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of high-strength bainitic steels

        Effects of Cu and B addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of high-strength bainitic steels were investigated in this study. Six kinds of steels were fabricated by controlling the amount of Cu and B addition, and their microstructures and tensile and Charpy impact properties were investigated. Their effective grain sizes were also characterized by the electron back-scatter diffraction analysis. The tensile test results indicated that the B- or Cu-containing steels had the higher yield and tensile strengths than the B- or Cu-free steels because their volume fractions of acicular ferrite and martensite were quite high. The B- or Cu-free steels had the higher upper shelf energy than the B- or Cu-containing steels because of their lower volume fraction of martensite. In the steel containing 10ppm B without Cu, the best combination of high strengths, high upper shelf energy, and low energy transition temperature could be obtained by the decrease in effective grain size due to the presence of acicular ferrite having fine effective grain size.

        Adenosine triphosphate-based chemotherapy response assay-guided chemotherapy in unresectable colorectal liver metastasis

        <P><B>Background:</B></P><P>This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of adenosine triphosphate-based chemotherapy response assay (ATP-CRA)-guided neoadjuvant chemotherapy for increasing resectability in patients with unresectable colorectal liver metastasis.</P><P><B>Patients and methods:</B></P><P>Patients were randomised into two groups: Group A was treated by conventional chemotherapy regimen and Group B was treated by chemotherapy regimen according to the ATP-CRA. Three chemotherapeutic agents (5-fluorouracil, oxaliplatin and irinotecan) were tested by ATP-CRA and more sensitive agents were selected. Either FOLFOX or FOLFIRI was administered. Between Group A and B, treatment response and resectability were compared.</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>Between November 2008 and October 2010, a total 63 patients were randomised to Group A (<I>N</I>=32) or Group B (<I>N</I>=31). FOLFOX was more preferred in Group A than in Group B (26 out of 32 (81.3%) <I>vs</I> 20 out of 31 (64.5%)). Group B showed better treatment response than Group A (48.4% <I>vs</I> 21.9%, <I>P</I>=0.027). The resectability of hepatic lesion was higher in Group B (35.5% <I>vs</I> 12.5%, <I>P</I>=0.032). Mean duration from chemotherapy onset to the time of liver resection was 11 cycles (range 4–12) in Group A and 8 cycles (range 8–16) in Group B.</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P>This study showed that tailored-chemotherapy based on ATP-CRA could improve the treatment response and resectability in initially unresectable colorectal liver metastasis.</P>

        젖산나트륨 첨가와 젖산 침지가 비엔나 소세지의 품질 및 관능상에 미치는 영향

        This study was conduct to investigate the interactive effects of sodium lactate addition and lactic acid dipping on the shelf life of Vienna sausage. Three kinds of Vienna sausages were macwfacaured as the control (addition of potassium sorbate and dipping in fumaric acid solution), treatment A(addition of sodium lactate and dipping in fumaric acid solution) and treatment B(addition of sodium lactate and dipping in lactic acid). They were divided into two groups and one group was stored at 5℃ for 6 weeks and the other one at 20℃ for 4 weeks. The physico-chemical properties of sausages were exanuned during the storage time. $quot;Ihe results are summarized as follows: 1. At both storage temperatures, lactic acid contents of treatment A and B were significantly (P$lt;0.05) higher than that of control. As storage period passed, it was significantly (P$lt;0.05) decreased in all treatments. Also, the decreasing rates of control and at 20℃ were higher than those of treatment A, B and at 5℃. 2. Jelly strength was low in the order of control, treatment A and B at both storage temperatures. Jelly strengths of control and treatment A were higher at the end of the storage compared to at the initial stage of the storage but treatment B was lower. It was lower at 30℃ than at 5℃. 3. At both storage temperatures, treatment B and control showed significantly (P$lt;0.05) higher $quot;L$quot; value than that of treatment A but lower $quot;a$quot; value, $quot;b$quot; value was decreased in the order of control, treatment A and B. $quot;L$quot; and $quot;a$quot; value were significantly (P$lt;0.05) decreased with storage period in all treatments but $quot;b$quot; value showed a increasing tendency. Treatment B showed intense discoloration compared to other treatments at 20℃. 4. In sensory panel score, there was a difference between control and treatment B and the difference was more obvious at 20℃ than at 5℃. From the results mentioned so far, it was shown that, treatment A maintained similar product quality to control at both storage temperatures white treatment B only at 5℃.

        14.6A GeV^28Si 중이온이 원자핵 건판내에서 발생시킨 N_h=1인 핵반응에서 생성된 47개의 파쇄 α 입자와 537개의 단일하전 2차입자의 발생각들을 측정하여 변수 exp(γ-η_b)의 포괄적 분포를 회귀함수 dN=exp[a+χ{exp(γ-η_b)d{exp(γ-η_b)}로 적합시켰다. 여기서 의사신속도 γ=arctanh(cosθ)=-ln tan(θ/2)이고, 입사 중이온의 신속도 η_b=3.445이다. 그 적합결과 파쇄 α입자의 경우 χ=-0.052±0.011이고, 파쇄 p입자의 경우 χ=-0.141±0.015이었다. For LS emission angles of 47 α fragments and 537 single-charged shower particles, produced by the N_h (the number of heavyprongs)=1 interactions of 14.6 A GeV^28Si nuclei in the nuclear emulsion, the distribution of the parameter exp(γ-η_b) is well expressed by dN=exp[a+χ{exp(γ-η_b)d{exp(γ-η_b)}with χ=-0.052±0.011 for αfragments and χ=-0.141±0.015 for p 'fragments', where the pseudorapidity of secondaries γ=arctanh(cosθ)=-ln tan(θ/2) and the rapidity of incident heavy ions, η_b=3.445.

      • HY5 regulates anthocyanin biosynthesis by inducing the transcriptional activation of the MYB75/PAP1 transcription factor in Arabidopsis

        Several positive transcription factors regulate Arabidopsis anthocyanin biosynthesis. HY5, a component of light-signaling pathways, and PAP1, an R2R3-MYB transcription factor, share common regulatory targets on anthocyanin biosynthesis genes. The epistatic interactions between the two transcription factors are currently unknown. To address this problem, we analyzed crosses between hy5 and pap1 mutants (hy5pap1) or pap1D overexpressors (hy5pap1D), performed chromatin immunoprecipitation-qPCR, and determined the PAP1 promoter region through deletion analysis. The results show that HY5 regulates PAP1 expression via direct binding to G- and ACE-boxes in the promoter region, which suggests bifurcate regulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis by HY5 via transcriptional activation of PAP1.

      • Anti-inflammatory effect of desoxo-narchinol-A isolated from Nardostachys jatamansi against lipopolysaccharide

        We previously reported that Nardostachys jatamansi (NJ) exhibits anti-inflammatory activity against lipopolysaccharide (LPS). However, the active compound in NJ is unknown. Therefore, here, we examined the effects of desoxo-narchinol-A (DN) isolated from NJ against LPS-induced inflammation. To demonstrate the anti-inflammatory effect of DN against LPS, we used two models; murine endotoxin shock model for in vivo model, and peritoneal macrophage responses for in vitro. In endotoxin shock model, DN was administrated intraperitoneally 1h before LPS challenge, then we evaluated mice survival rates and organ damages. Pretreatment with DN (0.05mg/kg, 0.1mg/kg, or 0.5mg/kg) dramatically reduced mortality in a murine LPS-induced endotoxin shock model. Furthermore, DN inhibited tissue injury and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), in the liver and lung. In in vitro macrophage model, we examined the inflammatory mediators and regulatory mechanisms such as mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). DN inhibited the production of inflammatory mediators, such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and its derivative nitric oxide (NO), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandin E<SUB>2</SUB> (PGE<SUB>2</SUB>), IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α and H3 protein acetylation in murine peritoneal macrophages. DN also inhibited p38 activation, but not extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-jun NH<SUB>2</SUB>-terminal kinase (JNK), and NF-κB. These results suggest that DN from NJ exhibits protective effects against LPS-induced endotoxin shock and inflammation through p38 deactivation.

        Phase II study of preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with irinotecan plus S-1 in locally advanced rectal cancer

        Background and purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of preoperative radiation therapy combined with S-1 and irinotecan (SI) in LARC. Materials and methods: Patients were considered LARC if they had a T3/T4 lesion or node positive. Weekly doses of 40mg/m<SUP>2</SUP> irinotecan were intravenously administered once per week during weeks 1-5 of radiotherapy. S-1 (70mg/m<SUP>2</SUP>) was given from Monday to Friday in all weeks of radiotherapy. 3-D conformal radiotherapy was given at daily fractions of 1.8Gy for 5days for a total dose of 50.4 (45+5.4)Gy. Surgery was performed 4-6weeks following the completion of chemoradiation. Results: Between June 2006 and November 2007, 43 pts were enrolled. The stage was: cT3 24 patients, cT4 6 patients; 28 patients were cN+. Forty-one patients completed the chemoradiation and 42 patients underwent operation: a low anterior resection was performed in 36 patients, a total colectomy in 1 patient, and an abdominal perineal resection in 5 patients. T downstaging was observed in 50%; 23 N+ patients became N- (55%). The complete pathological response was observed in 9 patients (21%). The 3-year locoregional failure rate, distant failure rate, disease-free survival, and overall survival were 9.5%, 18.6%, 72.1%, and 94.3%, respectively. Only three patients experienced G3 diarrhea; one had G3 sepsis and two had septic shock. Hematological toxicity (G3-G4) was observed in five patients. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the efficacy of preoperative CRT with S-1 and irinotecan with 21% of complete response. However, prompt recognition and management of infection is needed to use it in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer.

        Silicon anode prepared by rotary evaporation for lithium ion batteries

        <P>A rotary evaporation process was applied to improve electrical contact between acetylene black (AB) and Si electrode. Morphologies and electrochemical properties of the Si electrode were compared with those of conventionally prepared Si electrode. In the evaporated Si electrode, AB particles consisted of network-like structure surrounding the surface of Si particle, while in the conventional one, AB particles partially stuck on the Si surface. Increasing the current density from 0.1 to 0.5 C, stable cycle behavior with a slight decrease in discharge capacity was found in the evaporated electrode, while unstable cycle behavior with a significantly decreased capacity was observed in the conventional electrode. At high-current density (0.5 C rate), the discharge capacity of the evaporated Si electrode was maintained over 480 mAh g<SUP>−1</SUP> after 100 cycles. The good cycle performance was attributed to the low resistance induced by the improved interfacial contact between AB and Si particles.</P>
