Hexavalent chromium (CrVI) was fed to one day old chicks of Gallus domesticus in the form of different concentrations (250 and 500 mg/kg feed) of potassium dichromate mixed with the feed, ad libitum, for 32 weeks. After 20 weeks of feeding, the total body weight was higher in the low dose (260 mg/kg (feed) group and lower in the high dose (500 mg/kg feed) group, as compared with the control chicks. After 32 weeks of feeding, however, the total body weight was significantly decreased in both the treated groups. Egg laying was enhanced. Fertility remained unaffected, whereas hatchability was considerably decreased after CrVI-treatment. The egg shell thickness increased significantly (13%). Cr was deposited in a dose dependent manner in the liver and lungs. Some structural derangements in liver were also noted in treated chicks. The results of this study i.e., rapid ageing, excessive Cr deposition, decreased hatchability and hepatotoxicity indicate toxic effects of CrVI.

The antioxidant properties of aqueous extractsof 6 medicinal plants, Phyllanthus emblica, Terminalia chebula(black and yellow), Terminalia arjuna, BalsamodendronMukul, and Alium sativum against lipid peroxidation inmouse tissues were investigated. Extracts showed inhibitionagainst thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS)induced by pro-oxidant (5 μM sodium nitroprusside) in themouse brain and liver. Extracts displayed high free radicalscavenging activities against DPPH (IC50, 23.23±1.2 μg/mL, P. emblica), 20.24±0.9 μg/mL (T. chebula yellow),17.33±1.1 μg/mL (T. chebula black), 19.44±0.45 μg/mL (T. arjuna), 56.59±2.1 μg/mL (Balsamo-dendron Mukul), andhigher than 200 μg/mL (A. sativum). Higher antioxidantand inhibitory effects of T. chebula black are attributed toa higher phenolic content, Fe(II) chelating ability, reducingability, nitric oxide radical scavenging, and free radicalscavenging activity. Oxidative stress in the brain and livercould potentially be managed/prevented by dietary intakeof these plants.

최근 의료영상을 이용한 질병 진단법에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 관절경화증은 경동맥의 동맥을 좁게 하여 뇌로 들어가는 혈류의 일부 또는 전체를 차단하는 원인이 된다. 뇌로 흘러가는 혈류가 차단되는 경우 심각한 뇌졸중을 야기하기도 한다. 만일 초기에 경동맥 플라크를 발견하고 이를 치료하면 심각한 뇌졸중을 예방할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 경동맥의 동맥 초음파 영상에서 경동맥 플라크를 쉽게 발견하기 위한 능동적 윤곽선 추출기법에 기반을 둔 자동 분할기법을 제안한다. 실험에서 사용되는 초음파 영상은 자동 분할기법을 적용하기 전에 적절히 정렬되어있다고 가정한다. 경동맥의 동맥 초음파 영상에 대하여 스네이크 모델을 이용하여 자동분할 방법과 수동분할 방법을 질적 비교한 결과 제안된 방법이 성공적으로 적용되었음을 보여준다. 실험결과 제안된 방법은 방사선사들이 플라크를 쉽게 찾는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 자동화 방법이 될 것으로 예상된다. Disease diagnostics based on medical imaging is getting popularity day by day. Presence of the arthrosclerosis is one of the causes of narrowing of carotid arteries which may block partially or fully blood flow into the brain. Serious brain strokes may occur due to such types of blockages in blood flow. Early detection of the plaque and taking precautionary steps in this regard may prevent from such type of serious strokes. In this paper, we present an automatic image segmentation technique for carotid artery ultrasound images based on active contour approach. In our experimental study, we assume that ultrasound images are properly aligned before applying automatic image segmentation. We have successfully applied the automatic segmentation of carotid artery ultrasound images using snake based model. Qualitative comparison of the proposed approach has been made with the manual initialization of snakes for carotid artery image segmentation. Our proposed approach successfully segments the carotid artery images in an automated way to help radiologists to detect plaque easily. Obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Teratogenic and Embryotoxic Effects of Clomiphene Citrate in Developing Mice

The objective of this study was to assess the teratogenic and embryotoxic effects of clomiphene citrate in mice. The pregnant mice were administered a single dose of clomiphene citrate at different concentrations i.e 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 ${\mu}g/g$ BW on day 8 of gestation. Fetuses recovered on day 18 of gestation were analyzed on morphological, morphometric and histological basis. Morphological observations showed defects like open eyelids, anophthalmia, fore and hindlimb micromelia, meromelia, amelia, sacral hygroma, hydrocephaly, hemorrhagic spots, kyphosis and clubbed feet. Morphometric analysis indicated a significant (p<0.001) reduction in fetal body weight, crown rump length, head circumference, eye circumference, forelimb and hindlimb lengths and tail size against controls. The histological observations showed brain defects like hydrocephaly, enlarged ventricles and undifferentiated neuroglial cells in cerebellum. Cleft palate, underdeveloped pharynx and atrophy of jaw muscles were the common anatomical defects of pharyngeal region. It is concluded that the concentrations of clomiphene citrate used during the present study proved teratogenic in mice fetuses.
Cytotec Induced Embryotoxicity in Developing Mus musculus

The study was carried out to assess the developmental abnormalities induced by Cytotec in mice during intrauterine life. Pregnant mice were exposed to a single dose of 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 and $0.1{\mu}g$/g BW on day 8 of gestation. Fetuses were recovered on day 18 of gestation. These fetuses were subjected to morphological and morphometric studies. Morphological studies showed abnormalities like anophthalmia, microophthalmia, micromelia and syndactyly. In addition to these, resorptions were also encountered in the higher dose groups. Morphometric analysis showed an overall reduction in body weight, crown rump length, brain and eye circumference, pinna and snout size, length of fore and hind limb and tail size with a significant difference (p<0.001) compared to controls. The outcomes of histological studies revealed some brain defects like hydrocephaly, enlarged third ventricle and undifferentiated ectoneural cells and abnormalities of the heart included right auricle thrombosis and degeneration of trabecular zone.
Surgical Site Infection Following Fixation of Acetabular Fractures

Purpose: Acetabular fractures are mainly caused by high energy trauma. Surgical fixation of these fractures requires extensive surgical exposure which increases the length of operation and blood loss as well. This may increase the risk of surgical site infection. Our aim is to evaluate the prevalence of surgical site infections and the risk factors associated with it so as to minimize its chances. Materials and Methods: A total of 261 patients who underwent acetabular fracture surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into 2 groups, with or without surgical site infection. Factors examined include patients` gender, age, body mass index (BMI), time between injury and surgery, operative time, estimated blood loss, number of packed red blood cell transfused, length of total intensive care unit (ICU) stay, fracture type, surgical approach, smoking status, patients` comorbids and associated injuries. Results: Fourteen patients (5.4%) developed surgical site infection. Out of 14 infections, 4 were superficial and 10 were deep. The factors that were found to be associated with surgical site infection following acetabular fracture fixation were prolonged operation time, increased BMI, prolonged ICU stay, larger amount of packed red blood cell transfused and associated genitourinary and abdominal trauma. Conclusion: In our study, we conclude that measures should be undertaken to attenuate the chances of surgical site infection in this major surgery by considering the risk factors significantly associated with it.

The GMM is a conventional approach which has been recently applied in many face recognition studies. However, the question about how to deal with illumination changes while ensuring high performance is still a challenge, especially with real-world databases. In this paper, we propose a Visual Observation Confidence (VOC) measure for robust face recognition for illumination changes. Our VOC value is a combined confidence value of three measurements: Flatness Measure (FM), Centrality Measure (CM), and Illumination Normality Measure (IM). While FM measures the discrimination ability of one face, IM represents the degree of illumination impact on that face. In addition, we introduce CM as a centrality measure to help FM to reduce some of the errors from unnecessary areas such as the hair, neck or background. The VOC then accompanies the feature vectors in the EM process to estimate the optimal models by modified-GMM training. In the experiments, we introduce a real-world database, called KoFace, besides applying some public databases such as the Yale and the ORL database. The KoFace database is composed of 106 face subjects under diverse illumination effects including shadows and highlights. The results show that our proposed approach gives a higher Face Recognition Rate (FRR) than the GMM baseline for indoor and outdoor datasets in the real-world KoFace database (94% and 85%, respectively) and in ORL, Yale databases (97% and 100% respectively).
