Discovery of a Rapid, Luminous Nova in NGC 300 by the KMTNet Supernova Program

<P>We present the discovery of a rapidly evolving transient by the Korean Microlensing Telescope Network Supernova Program (KSP). KSP is a novel high-cadence supernova survey that offers deep (similar to 21.5 mag in BV I bands), nearly continuous wide-field monitoring for the discovery of early and/ or fast optical transients. KSP-OT-201509a, reported here, was discovered on 2015 September 27 during the KSP commissioning run in the direction of the nearby galaxy NGC. 300, and stayed above detection limit for similar to 22 days. We use our BV I light curves to constrain the ascent rate, -3.7(7) mag day(-1) in V, decay timescale, t(2)(V) = 1.7(6) 2 days, and peak absolute magnitude, -9.65 <= MV <= -9.25 mag. We also find evidence for a short-lived pre-maximum halt in all bands. The peak luminosity and light-curve evolution make KSP-OT-201509a. consistent with a bright, rapidly decaying nova outburst. We discuss constraints on the nature of the progenitor and its environment using archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/ACS images and conclude with a broad discussion on the nature of the system.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Trace elements (TEs) are deposited to soils mainly due to anthropogenic activities and pose a significant threat to human health. In this review we aimed at (a) discussing the phytoavailability of TEs as affected by various soil parameters, and by plant defense mechanisms related to uptake and translocation; (b) examining soil and plant indices related to TE phytoavailability; (c) clarifying the challenges and problems related to phytoremediation; and (d) exploring the often encountered discrepancies of lower-than-expected TE toxicity. We particularly discussed the soil-to-plant availability index (transfer coefficient, <I>TC</I>), because it encompasses all soil and plant factors related to TE phytoavailability. As for soil, we explored the effect of pH, redox potential, clay and organic matter contents, as well as aging of added elements. The latter is a key factor in interpreting the observed lower-than-expected toxicity to plants in real field conditions. This is because the discrepancy is very often generated by growth experiments that expose plants to TEs directly from TE-laden solutions or by studies that spike soils with TEs only days or weeks before planting. Also, the behavior of TEs depends on the nature and quantity of TEs. As for plant, TE absorption or exclusion is highly related to species-specific defense mechanisms developed by plants so that they are exposed to TE-induced stress. These mechanisms address TE exposure by operating both outside and inside the plant body; outside with the assistance of root exudates, and the rhizosphere microflora, and inside with selective translocation and storage processes. The absorption/exclusion behavior of plants also depends on root activities and related soil chemical processes which are highly localized within a spatial scale of a few mm from roots. Novel techniques for the imaging of TE biogeochemistry at the root-soil interface are therefore addressed and their explanatory power is demonstrated. Such plant behavior greatly affects phytoremediation, a process which also depends on the maximal TE uptake capacity of plants, especially of hyperaccumulators. However, phytoremediation also greatly depends on plant biomass yield, an important factor in determining the time required to complete the procedure. In conclusion, soil factors, as well as plant- and TE- related issues, may create discrepancies in TE phytoavailability and phytoremediation that need to be thoroughly understood and addressed.</P>

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Purpose: Trauma is the most common cause for chronic coccygodynia. The present study aims at presenting our results after complete removal of the coccyx for refractory traumatic coccygodynia in terms of pain level, complication rates, and patients’ overall satisfaction. Overview of Literature: There is limited extant literature describing the success rate and complications in refractory isolated traumatic coccygodynia. Methods: From January 2011 to January 2012, 10 consecutive patients with posttraumatic coccygodynia (six males and four females; mean age, 42 years) were enrolled in our study. Conservative treatment of the condition had failed in all patients. The same surgeon performed a complete coccygectomy on all patients. Postoperative outcomes included measurements of pain relief and degree of patient satisfaction with the procedure’s results. Results: In our selected cohort, all patients indicated complete pain relief or significant pain improvement in follow up-care and would recommend this procedure. One patient developed a subcutaneous hematoma that required surgical intervention. Conclusions: Our results suggest that complete removal of the coccyx relieves pain in patients with refractory chronic traumatic coccygodyniaand is therefore a reasonable treatment option after conservative treatment failure.

<P>We report multicolor BVI monitoring and spectroscopic classification of the dwarf nova KSP-OT-201503a. The transient was detected by the Korean Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) Supernova Program (KSP) in 2015 March, reached a peak apparent magnitude V similar or equal to 17.3 mag from a quiescent magnitude V similar or equal to 22.6 mag, and lasted for approximately 17 days. Our high-cadence sampling allows us to identify distinctive phases consisting of a rapid ascent, a main outburst composed of a flat plateau followed by a gradual dimming, and a quick decline. We observe the sharp transition between the ascent phase and main outburst phase, likely related to the deceleration of the heating front as it passes through the accretion disk. These features in the light curves indicate that the outburst is outside-in. Archival data reveal the outburst history of the source, showing at least three outbursts between 2011 and 2015. These are equally separated by approximately 25 months, though we find a recurrence time as short as 189 days is compatible with the archival data. An optical spectrum obtained 701 days from outburst peak shows prominent Balmer emission lines superimposed on a blue continuum, consistent with a cataclysmic variable in quiescence. The outburst properties of KSP-OT-201503a closely resemble those of U Gem-type dwarf novae usually associated with younger, longer-period systems above the period gap of 2-3 hr observed in cataclysmic variables. This suggests that the source may be a rare U Gem-type dwarf nova with a long recurrence time, though we are unable to rule out the possibility that KSP-OT-201503a lies below the period gap.</P>

Background: In the absence of clear guidelines for facial aesthetic surgery, most surgeons rely on expert intuitive judgement when planning aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. One of the most famous theories regarding "ideal" facial proportions is that of the golden proportion. However, there are conflicting opinions as to whether it can be used to assess facial attractiveness. The aim of this investigation was to assess facial ratios of professional black models and to compare the ratios with the golden proportion. Methods: Forty photographs of male and female professional black models were collected. Observers were asked to assign a score from 1 to 10 (1 = not very attractive, 10 = very attractive). A total of 287 responses were analysed for grading behaviour according to various demographic factors by two groups of observers. The best graded photographs were compared with the least well-graded photographs to identify any differences in their facial ratios. The models' facial ratios were calculated and compared with the golden proportion. Results: Differences in grading behaviour were observed amongst the two assessment groups. Only one out of the 12 facial ratios was not significantly different from the golden proportion. Conclusions: Only one facial ratio was observed to be similar to the golden proportion in professional model facial photographs. No correlation was found between facial ratios in professional black models with the golden proportion. It is proposed that an individualistic treatment for each ratio is a rather better method to guide future practice.

Undifferentiated Embryonal Sarcoma of the Liver (UESL) is a tumor highly malignant, of mesenchymal origin. It is a rare finding in adults, though less rare in children. The strategy to be followed and the therapeutic targets to be reached for this tumor, in adult cases, remain ambiguous and controversial. Herein we report the case of a 29 year old female patient with a massive UESL and we describe our therapeutic approach. A 29 year-old female patient was referred to our center with severe intermittent epigastric pain and fever due to a voluminous liver tumor: Needle biopsy was of no specific findings and surgical excision was decided. Right portal vein embolization and selective embolization of the segment’s IV branch was performed in order to achieve adequate future liver remnant (FLR). Right trisectonectomy was then performed, with uneventful post operative period and the patient was discharged at the 11<SUP>th</SUP> post operative day. UESL is a rare tumor that needs aggressive surgical approach and multidisciplinary team management is of paramount importance.
