The solar neighbourhood is the starting point for studies of the structure and evolution of the Galactic disk. Yet, our knowledge of the relative frequencies, distances, ages, chemical abundances, velocities, and birthplaces of the nearby stars is severely incomplete. We have determined complete, homogeneous, and precise such data for a kinematically unbiased sample of $\~$12,000 local F and G dwarf stars and describe a first, significant result from it.
An Approach to Isolation of Thromboxane Synthase (TX-SYN) by Ligand Tethered Affinity Techniques

The affinity chromatographic technique was applied to the isolation of Thromboxane Synthase, with a variety of imidazolyl alkanoic acids coupled Sepharose 2B including a gel (G in Table 4) which has one free COOH group in the bound affinity ligand. The effect of ligand structure on the "affinity" and "selectivity" for thromboxane synthase isolation is described.
Secondary human impacts on the forest understory of Ulleung Island, South Korea, a temperate island

Oceanic islands are biologically important for their unique assemblages of species and high levels of endemism and are sensitive to environmental change because of their isolation and small species source pools. Habitat destruction caused by human landscape development is generally accepted as the main cause of extinction on islands, with exotic species invasion a secondary cause of extinction, especially on tropical islands. However, secondary impacts of human development (e.g., general degradation through resource use and exotic species introduction) are understudied on temperate islands. To determine secondary impacts of human development on the understory vegetation community, 90 field sites on Ulleung Island, South Korea, were sampled during the summer of 2016. Understory vegetation was chosen as it is a proxy for ecosystem health. Diversity and percent cover of introduced, native, and endemic species were tested against proximity to developed areas and trail usage using a model selection approach. Diversity was also tested against percent cover of three naturalized species commonly found in survey plots. The main finding was that distance to development, distance to town, and trail usage have limited negative impacts on the understory vegetation community within best-supported models predicting native and introduced cover and diversity. However, endemic species cover was significantly lower on high usage trails. While there are no apparent locally invasive plant species on the island at the time of this study, percent cover of Robinia pseudoacacia, a naturalized tree species, negatively correlated with plot diversity. These findings indicate that forests on Ulleung Island are not experiencing a noticeable invasion of understory vegetation, and conservation efforts can be best spent preventing future invasions.

Precise masses, radii, and luminosities from eclipsing binaries and colour-magnitude diagrams for open clusters are classic tools in empirical tests of stellar evolution models. We review the accuracy and completeness required for such data to discriminate between current models and describe some recent. results with implications for convection theory.

<P>Ochromonas triangulata, the type species for a genus with over 125 taxa, was collected for only the second time, again from the type locality. Cell morphology, cell division, palmelloid stage and cyst structure generally agreed with the original description. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the 18S rRNA gene revealed 13 clades of Ochromonas-like flagellates as well as the clade represented by our O. triangulata strain and the nearly identical strain RCC-21/AC025. We also conducted a concatenated analysis using the 18S rRNA and the rbcL genes, and we recovered the same 14 clades. One clade, containing strains CCAP 933/27 and CCMP1861, previously named Ochromonas tuberculata, was re-identified as Chrysastrella paradoxa and Chrysastrella breviappendiculata, respectively. One clade included the Poterioochromonas strains but we were unable to convincingly connect species names to the strains because authentic strains were unknown or not examined. Organisms in the clade that included the well-known Ochromonas danica were assigned to Chlorochromonas. The generic name Melkoniania gen. nov. was proposed for one distinct clade of marine flagellates. These changes addressed some of the issues associated with the polyphyletic Ochromonas sensu lato but many problems remained.</P>
Product Market Integration and Wage Formation

This paper analysis the basic labour market inter-dependencies among countries with intra-industrial trade and imperfectly competitive product and labour markets. The paper stresses two major channel through which increased integration may affect product markets and therefore in turn labour markets. First, market entry becomes easier and/or less costly implying that more goods become traded goods. Second, market integration among economies already open to trade may reduce the explicit or implicit trade costs of selling in foreign markets. It is found that the two channels have different implications for wage formation.

지난 세기의 시작 아래로, 50Hz 또는 60Hz로 운영되는 교류는 저력 계통 망의 송전과 배전에 지배적으로 사용되는 방법이었다. 그러나, 일반적으로 HVDC라 불리는, 고압 직류 송전은 매우 긴 장거리 선로에 대한 경제적 해법을 제공하고 이미 실현 비 동기화 AC계통 사이의 연계를 가능케 하였다. 50MW에서 6300MW까지의 각 Scheme별로 건설된 직류송전은 전세계적으로 총 59GW HVDC Scheme이 설치되어있으며, 이 기술을 위해서는 더 많은 응용이 고려되고 있다. 본 원고에서는 HVDC의 특성, 포함된 설비, HVDC의 사용 그리고 기술 발전의 요약을 기술하였다.
