<P>We demonstrate passive mode-locking of a Tm,Ho-codoped crystalline laser operating on the Ho3+-ion transition I-5(7)-->I-5(8) near 2 mu(m) using a single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorber. The Tm,Ho:KLu(WO4)(2) laser emits nearly transform-limited pulses with duration of 2.8 ps at a repetition rate of 91 MHz. The output power amounts to 97 mW. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America</P>

Observation of a first ν<sub>τ</sub> candidate event in the OPERA experiment in the CNGS beam

The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) has been designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode through the study of the ν<SUB>μ</SUB>->ν<SUB>τ</SUB> channel. The hybrid apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2008 and 2009. After a brief description of the beam, the experimental setup and the procedures used for the analysis of the neutrino events, we describe the topology and kinematics of a first candidate ν<SUB>τ</SUB> charged-current event satisfying the kinematical selection criteria. The background calculations and their cross-check are explained in detail and the significance of the event is assessed.

A method of computational reduction of an elastic contact model for rigid bodies in frame of the Hertz contact model is considered. An algorithm to transform outer surfaces’ geometric properties to the local contact coordinates system is described. It tracks permanently in time the surfaces of the bodies which are able to contact. An approach to compute the normal elastic force is represented. That one deals with the reduction to one transcendental scalar equation that includes the complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds. Simulation of the Hertz model was accelerated essentially due to use of the differential technique to compute the complete elliptic integrals and due to the replacement of the implicit transcendental equation by the differential one. Based on the Hertz contact problem classic solution, an invariant form for the force function which depends on the geometric properties of an intersection for undeformed rigid bodies’ volumes, so-called volumetric model, is proposed then. The resulting force function reduced expression is supposed to be in use in cases when the classical contact theory hypotheses are broken. The expression derived has been applied to several cases of the elastic bodies contacting, and in particular back to the source Hertz model itself.

The present study is devoted to the relationship between A. Izmajlov and A. Remizov. This article is based on their correspondence (1911-1918) which was prepared for publication by researchers of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkinskij Dom) Russian Academy of Sciences. This correspondence reveals the important issues of Remizov’s creativity. This is his perception of his own works, the writing plans, etc. We used previously unpublished materials from the archives of St. Petersburg and Moscow. Izmailov is known as a gifted parodist of modernist literature. He reacted very negatively to the first experience of the emerging trends. Over time, his views on literary modernism products have undergone a certain evolution. In particular, it is traced in his relation to the work of Remizov. Critic discovered the beauty of symbolism through progressive mood in 1907. But he did not fall into the blind worship of a new direction. This article provides an overview of critical reviews of the Remizov’s poetry. It allows to correct the widespread belief about Izmailov as an irreconcilable opponent of modernist literature.

В ней отражено его восприятие собственных произведений, писательские планы, отношение к критическим высказываниям в свой адрес. К работе привлечены ранее неопубликованные материалы из архивохранилищ Санкт-Петербурга и Москвы. По отношению к творчеству модернистов Измайлов известен как талантливый пародист, резко отрицательно воспринявший первые опыты нарождающегося течения. Со временем его взгляды на литературную продукцию модернистов претерпели определенную эволюцию. Прогрессивный настрой 1907 года позволил критику открыть для себя красоты символизма, не впадая, однако, в слепое почитание нового направления. Приведенный в статье обзор критических отзывов Измайлова о творчестве Ремизова позволяет существенно скорректировать распространенное мнение о критике как о непримиримом противнике модернистского направления в литературе.
