This paper tries to identify the particular point of time when the foreign exchange market undergoes a significant structural change which could be a possible reason why most existing models of exchange rate determination fail to explain exchange rate movemets and forecast for out-of-sample periods. The technique developed by the writers is a new application of MAIC, bringing it one more step further. It is also superior to traditional methods because of its arbitrary-free characteristic of detecting structural changes. Seven major currencies vis-a-vis the U.S. dollar are examined for the recent floating period.
The Forward Exchange Rate and the Interest Rate within a Production Economy

This paper considers some equilibrium characteristics of the forward foreign exchange rate and the interest rate within a production economy. In order to derive the optimal solutions, a two-stage decision process is assumed; the first is the production decision, and the second is the portfolio decision. With some additional assumptions, both the forward exchange rate and the interest rate are shown to depend on the underlying stochastic parameter in the production function. Unlike in an exchange economy, the unbiasedness hypothesis of the forward exchange rate fails because of random technological shocks in production.(JEL Classification: F31, G11, E21)

The consumer demands for quality of meats has become diverse in recent years. The present paper describes mainly the technology to improve the broiler meat quality with special reference to reducing fat contents in edible meats which is the heart of the quality constraints. Abdominal fat deposition in broilers was reduced by feeding of medium-chain triglycerides(MCT), suggesting MCT feeding is useful to produce broiler meat with low fat content. A phase feeding system to aim at improving meat quality that is mainly comprised with partial replacement of dietary protein into phase during 4∼6 weeks increased edible meat yields and reduced abdominal fat deposition and fat contents in breast and thigh meats. Whiteness of fat tissue was intensified by feeding beef tallow or lard in place of yellow grease. Feeding Phaffia yeast containing astaxanthin increased redness of breast and thigh meats and improved visual appearance of meats which may be preferential for consumers. Feeding fish oil reduced abdominal fat deposition and increased EPA and DHA contents of fat tissues. These procedures could be used for manipulation of meat quality to meet consumer demands.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Direct formation of graphene films on dielectric substrates is investigated by the “etching-precipitation” method which converts metal-carbon mixed films to graphene films by etching metal away by Cl<SUB>2</SUB> at 600–650 °C. Here we report a new approach for improved control of the layer number and continuity of the graphene films. Reactive sputtering of Fe in C<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>/Ar enabled fine control of the carbon concentrations and thicknesses of the initial Fe-C films, which yielded continuous multilayer graphene films of controllable average layer numbers of ~10–40, low resistivity down to ~240 μΩ cm, and high Raman G-band to D-band intensity ratio up to 16 directly on SiO<SUB>2</SUB> substrates. We also show that the carbon concentration of the initial Fe-C films determines the film continuity and crystallinity of the graphene.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Continuous films of multilayer graphene are formed directly on SiO<SUB>2</SUB>. </LI> <LI> Average layer number is controlled for a wide range of ~10–40. </LI> <LI> Raman G-band to D-band intensity ratio up to 16 shows the high graphene quality. </LI> <LI> Such films are obtained by removing Fe from Fe-C films using Cl<SUB>2</SUB> at 600–650 °C. </LI> </UL> </P>
Hydrogenation Properties and Crystal Structures of Ti-Mn-V BCC Solid Solution Alloys

We have proposed new hydrogen absorbing alloys of the 'Laves phase related BCC solid solution alloy', the hydrogen capacity of which reaches almost double that of conventional rare-earth based ABs alloys. We have reported the hydrogen absorbing properties of Ti-V-Mn, Ti-V-Cr and T-V-Mn-Cr alloys. It has been accepted that the crystal structural change of BCC hydrogen absorbing alloys is the same as that of V metal. The mono-hydride (H/M=1) of V metal has a BCT structure and the di-hydride (H/M=2) has an FCC structure. However, we recently found that the Ti-V-Mn alloy shows different behaviors in phase transformation with hydrogenation to V metal. We found three hydride phases with a BCC, a deformed FCC and an FCC structure in the Ti-V-Mn solid solution alloy-H₂ system. The deformed FCC hydride phase has not yet to our knowledge been reported. The lattice constant of the deformed FCC was 0.407 nm, one axis of which is reduced by about 4%. Its single-phase region appeared at a hydrogen content between 0.8 H/M and 1.0 H/M in absorption at 298 K. The lower plateau observed due to formation of the deformed FCC hydride phase gives an increase of effective hydrogen capacity by decreasing hydrogen remaining in the alloy in the desorption process.

Stability of Monetary Union with Outsiders

This article examines stability of a three-country model which comprises a monetary union with two “ins” (i.e. members) and an “out” (i.e. non-member). This stability issue was examined by McAvinchey and McCausland who considered a hypothetical enlargement of Eurozone with a new member country, and empirically showed that the effects of enlargement are “predominantly destabilizing”. Using the Argy’s method of exact log-linearization, we show that the model is intrinsically unstable. A numerical example is given with the 2010 parameter values. We found that the stability could ironically be rehabilitated when uncovered interest parity and purchasing power parity are violated.
