      • Quality of Life of Multiethnic Adolescents Living with a Parent with Cancer

Ainuddin, Husna A.,Loh, Siew Yim,Low, Wah Yun,Sapihis, Musaropah,Roslani, April Camilla Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.12

Background: Research evidence suggests a debilitating impact of the diagnosis of cancer on the quality of life of the afflicted individuals, their spouses and their families. However, relatively few studies have been carried out on the impact on the QOL of adolescents living with parents diagnosed with cancer. This paper presents a sub-analysis on the impact of parental cancer (colorectal, breast and lung) on adolescents. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study on adolescents aged 13-18 years old. Upon ethical clearance obtained from UMMC Medical Ethics Committee, patients with colorectal, breast or lung cancer and their adolescent children were recruited from the Clinical Oncology Unit of University of Malaya Medical Centre. Respondents who gave consent completed a demographic questionnaire and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, via the post, email, home visit or meetings at the clinics. Results: 95 adolescents from 50 families responded, giving a response rate of 88 percent. The adolescent's mean age was 16 years (ranging between 13-18 years). Adolescents with parental cancer had the lowest mean score in emotional functioning (p<0.05). Male adolescents had significantly higher quality of life overall and in physical functioning compared to female adolescents. Adolescents with a father with cancer had better school functioning compared to adolescents whose mothers had cancer. Families with household income of RM 5000 and above have significantly better quality of life compared to families with lower household income. Conclusions: Adolescent sons and daughters of parents with a cancer diagnosis show lowered QOL, particularly with reference to emotional functioning and school performance. Addressing the needs of this young group has been slow and warrants special attention. Revisiting the risk and resilience factors of adolescents might also inform tailored programs to address the needs of this neglected adolescent population.

      • Secure Password Transmission for Web Applications over Internet using Cryptography and Image Steganography

Mehdi Hussain,Ainuddin Wahid Abdul Wahab,Ishrat Batool,Muhammad Arif 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Security and Its Applicat Vol.9 No.2

The significance of digital information security has been enhanced due to the boost of internet communication. Providing security for server client communication over the internet is a critical issue due to open world digital eavesdroppers. Generally, password authentication is required for establishing a connection between server and client environment. The client password is verified by the server ends to establish a valid connection. Successful password verification initiates the client and server to perform further secured request and response mechanisms. The problem of password authentication over insecure networks presents in many application areas, such as web login, remote logins of computer networks. Hence the significance of confidential password transmission over insecure internet becomes the necessity of secure authentication. In this paper, we proposed a secure password transmission over the internet for authentication of server/client environment using encryption and image steganography. Client password is first encrypted and embedded in an image using steganographic algorithm at client side and transmitted over unsecured network to the web server. On the other side server extract safely password from image steganography decoding algorithm, decrypt and verified it’s with SQL database server. In case if the intruder steals the image over network he/she will be unable to decode the password from the image. The prototype of the proposed method is implemented using JavaScript, Html, and ASP.net for verification purpose.

      • Image steganography in spatial domain: A survey

        Hussain, Mehdi,Wahab, Ainuddin Wahid Abdul,Idris, Yamani Idna Bin,Ho, Anthony T.S.,Jung, Ki-Hyun Elsevier 2018 SIGNAL PROCESSING-IMAGE COMMUNICATION - Vol.65 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This paper presents a literature review of image steganography techniques in the spatial domain for last 5 years. The research community has already done lots of noteworthy research in image steganography. Even though it is interesting to highlight that the existing embedding techniques may not be perfect, the objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive survey and to highlight the pros and cons of existing up-to-date techniques for researchers that are involved in the designing of image steganographic system. In this article, the general structure of the steganographic system and classifications of image steganographic techniques with its properties in spatial domain are exploited. Furthermore, different performance matrices and steganalysis detection attacks are also discussed. The paper concludes with recommendations and good practices drawn from the reviewed techniques.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> This paper presents literature review of spatial domain image steganography techniques published in recent 5 years. </LI> <LI> The objective is to provide a comprehensive survey and to highlight the pros and cons on up-to-date techniques. </LI> <LI> The structure of the steganographic system and classifications of image steganography with its properties are discussed. Distinctive phyllosphere bacterial communities in tropical trees.

        Kim, Mincheol,Singh, Dharmesh,Lai-Hoe, Ang,Go, Rusea,Abdul Rahim, Raha,Ainuddin, A N,Chun, Jongsik,Adams, Jonathan M Springer-Verlag 2012 Microbial ecology Vol.63 No.3

<P>Recent work has suggested that in temperate and subtropical trees, leaf surface bacterial communities are distinctive to each individual tree species and dominated by Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria. In order to understand how general this pattern is, we studied the phyllosphere bacterial community on leaves of six species of tropical trees at a rainforest arboretum in Malaysia. This represents the first detailed study of 'true' tropical lowland tree phyllosphere communities. Leaf surface DNA was extracted and pyrosequenced targeting the V1-V3 region of 16S rRNA gene. As was previously found in temperate and subtropical trees, each tree species had a distinctive bacterial community on its leaves, clustering separately from other tree species in an ordination analysis. Bacterial communities in the phyllosphere were unique to plant leaves in that very few operational taxonomic units (0.5%) co-occurred in the surrounding soil environment. A novel and distinctive aspect of tropical phyllosphere communities is that Acidobacteria were one of the most abundant phyla across all samples (on average, 17%), a pattern not previously recognized. Sequences belonging to Acidobacteria were classified into subgroups 1-6 among known 24 subdivisions, and subgroup 1 (84%) was the most abundant group, followed by subgroup 3 (15%). The high abundance of Acidobacteria on leaves of tropical trees indicates that there is a strong relationship between host plants and Acidobacteria in tropical rain forest, which needs to be investigated further. The similarity of phyllosphere bacterial communities amongst the tree species sampled shows a significant tendency to follow host plant phylogeny, with more similar communities on more closely related hosts.</P>
