An integrated waste management approach for irradiated graphite was developed during the European Commission project 'Treatment and Disposal of Irradiated Graphite and other Carbonaceous Waste'. This included the identification of potential options for the management of irradiated graphite, taking account of storage, retrieval, treatment and disposal methods. This paper describes how these options can be assessed using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) for a case study relating to a generic power reactor. Criteria have been defined to account for safety, environmental, economic and socio-political factors, including radiological impact, resource usage, economic costs and risks. The impact of each option against each criterion has been assessed using data from the project and the wider literature. A linear additive approach has been used to convert the calculated impacts to scores. To account for the relative importance of the criteria, example weightings were allocated. This application has shown that MCDA approaches can be used to support complex decisions regarding irradiated graphite management, accounting for a wide range of criteria. Use of this approach by individual countries or organisations will need to account for the specific options, scores, weightings and constraints that apply, based on their national strategies, regulatory requirements and public acceptability.
Spiral tool paths for high-speed machining of 2D pockets with or without islands

We describe new methods for the construction of spiral tool paths for high-speed machining. In the sim-plest case, our method takes a polygon as input and a number d > 0 and returns a spiral starting at a cen-tral point in the polygon, going around towards the boundary while morphing to the shape of the polygon. The spiral consists of linear segments and circular arcs, it is G1 continuous, it has no self-intersections, and the distance from each point on the spiral to each of the neighboring revolutions is at most d. Our method has the advantage over previously described methods that it is easily adjustable to the case where there is an island in the polygon to be avoided by the spiral. In that case, the spiral starts at the island and morphs the island to the outer boundary of the polygon. It is shown how to apply that method to make significantly shorter spirals in some polygons with no islands than what is obtained by conventional spiral tool paths. Finally, we show how to make a spiral in a polygon with multiple islands by connecting the islands into one island.
The Dark Side of a Mastery Emphasis: Can Mastery Involvement Create Stress and Anxiety?

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the potential associations of motivational fluctuations during a full season with football players from one Premier Division team in Europe. Using correlational analyses we examined whether such motivational changes would mirror changes in stress perceptions (media and organizational) and performance anxiety levels. We used Achievement Goal Theory and Cognitive Activation Theory of Stress in the examination. In the elite sport setting, the endorsement of mastery involvement is recommended in order to avoid unnecessary stress and performance anxiety among athletes. 27 players (18-31 years old, Mage = 22.26 years, SD = 4.21) answered the questionnaires monthly over a season. We found that the athletes’ scores fluctuated over the season with interesting variations in the variables at time 2 (before season start) and time 7 (after the summer break) with a combination of high task orientation, high mastery climate perceptions and higher anxiety scores. The present findings revealed that stress may occur when there is a discrepancy between set values (what usually is) and actual value (what is). If the athletes are more accustomed to being evaluated normatively for the team roster, a sudden emphasis on personal improvement and maximum effort is very different . and may simply stress athletes even in a mastery environment.
Extremely Long Latency Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

Case history of a 67-year-old man diagnosed with posterior benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) with extremely long latencies after holding the Dix-Hallpike position for five minutes. Additional vestibular assessment indicated partial unilateral hypofunction. The patient had a history compatible with classic BPPV. This patient, however, did not have any positional nystagmus after doing standard positional testing. With extremely prolonged Dix-Hallpike testing (five minutes), the patient experienced nausea and vertigo. Concomitantly classic peripheral nystagmus was observed. After a total of seventeen treatments in a reposition chair a total relief of symptoms was obtained. The extremely long latencies observed in this patient were ascribed to otoconial adherence and/or otoconial size. This type of BPPV has not previously been described.
The Effects from Mindfulness Training on Norwegian Junior elite Athletes in Sport

This study investigates the effects from a 12-weeks mindfulness intervention on perceived stress, perceived performance in school and sports, and athlete burnout among junior elite athletes in sports. In the present investigation 50 Norwegian junior athletes from two different schools for elite sports participated in an experiment with a pre-test, post-test control group design. Twenty three of them were in the experiment group whereas 27 were in the control group. The athletes were from different sports such as cross country skiing, biathlon, shooting and track and field. As hypothesized, we found significant effects from the mindfulness intervention on athlete burnout. There were no significant effects found on perceived stress, perceived performance in school and sports. These findings are discussed in regard of applied implications and possible future research.
Normative Vestibular-Ocular Reflex Gain Values for the Vertical Semicircular Canals

Objectives: To determine normative vestibular-ocular-reflex (VOR) gain values for the vertical semicircular canals (SCCs) within a Danish cohort of healthy adults. Normative data regarding the vertical SCCs are sparse. Assessing the function of all 6 SCCs is important, as some vestibular diseases may selectively affect specific SCCs.Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study of 60 subjects aged 18–65 years with no previous vestibular disorders. All subjects underwent complete exam-ination of all 6 SCCs with EyeSeeCam video head impulse test (vHIT) system.Results: Mean VOR gain values of the right anterior and left posterior canal were 1.46 and 1.43 respectively. For the left anterior and right posterior canals, mean VOR gain values were 0.96 and 0.97 respectively.Conclusions: Our results suggest that mean VOR gain is close to 1.4 in the right anterior and left posterior plane and close to one for the left anterior and right posterior plane when testing the vertical SCCs in healthy adults with the EyeSeeCam vHIT system.

The European Treatment and Disposal of Irradiated Graphite and other Carbonaceous Waste projectsought to develop best practices in the retrieval, treatment, and disposal of irradiated graphite includingother irradiated carbonaceous waste such as structural material made of graphite, nongraphitized carbonbricks, and fuel coatings. Emphasis was given on legacy irradiated graphite, as this represents a significantinventory in respective national waste management programs. This paper provides an overview ofthe characteristics of graphite irradiated during its use, primarily as a moderator material, within nuclearreactors. It describes the potential techniques applicable to the retrieval, treatment, recycling/reuse, anddisposal of these graphite wastes. Considering the lifecycle of nuclear graphite, from manufacture to finaldisposal, a number of waste management options have been developed. These options consider thetechniques and technologies required to address each stage of the lifecycle, such as segregation, treatment,recycle, and ultimate disposal in a radioactive waste repository, providing a toolbox to aid operatorsand regulators to determine the most appropriate management strategy. It is noted that nationalwaste management programs currently have, or are in the process of developing, respective approachesto irradiated graphite management. The output of the Treatment and Disposal of Irradiated Graphite andother Carbonaceous Waste project is intended to aid these considerations, rather than dictate them.

The mediating role of types of passion in the relationships between motivational climates and subjective vitality was examined among 283 experienced young Norwegian grassroots football players (aged 12-16 years). A Structural Equation Model (SEM) based path model revealed that mastery climate predicted subjective vitality directly as well as mediated by harmonious passion and through a chain in which harmonious passion fuelled obsessive passion, in turn facilitating vitality. The former was the stronger mediation path of the two. A performance climate was unrelated to obsessive passion. The pattern of results generally supports the proposed motivational climate-passion-vitality link. However, the observed mediation chain involving also a positive mastery climate-obsessive passion-vitality link invites further examinations to better understand both young football players` subjective meaning making of harmonious and obsessive passion.
