Intestinal failure (IF) is the critical reduction of the gut mass or its function below the minimum needed to absorb nutrients and fluids required for adequate growth in children. Severe IF requires parenteral nutrition (PN). Pediatric IF is most commonly due to congenital or neonatal intestinal diseases or malformations divided into 3 groups: 1) reduced intestinal length and consequently reduced absorptive surface, such as in short bowel syndrome (SBS) or extensive aganglionosis; 2) abnormal development of the intestinal mucosa such as congenital diseases of enterocyte development; 3) extensive motility dysfunction such as chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndromes. The leading cause of IF in childhood is the SBS. In clinical practice the degree of IF may be indirectly measured by the level of PN required for normal or catch up growth. Other indicators such as serum citrulline have not proven to be highly reliable prognostic factors in children. The last decades have allowed the development of highly sophisticated nutrient solutions consisting of optimal combinations of macronutrients and micronutrients as well as guidelines, promoting PN as a safe and efficient feeding technique. However, IF that requires long-term PN may be associated with various complications including infections, growth failure, metabolic disorders, and bone disease. IF Associated Liver Disease may be a limiting factor. However, changes in the global management of IF pediatric patients, especially since the setup of intestinal rehabilitation centres did change the prognosis thus limiting “nutritional failure” which is considered as a major indication for intestinal transplantation (ITx) or combined liver-ITx.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This Letter presents a search at the LHC for <I>s</I>-channel single top-quark production in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The analyzed data set was recorded by the ATLAS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb<SUP>−1</SUP>. Selected events contain one charged lepton, large missing transverse momentum and exactly two <I>b</I>-tagged jets. A multivariate event classifier based on boosted decision trees is developed to discriminate <I>s</I>-channel single top-quark events from the main background contributions. The signal extraction is based on a binned maximum-likelihood fit of the output classifier distribution. The analysis leads to an upper limit on the <I>s</I>-channel single top-quark production cross-section of 14.6 pb at the 95% confidence level. The fit gives a cross-section of <SUB> σ s </SUB> = 5.0 ± 4.3 pb , consistent with the Standard Model expectation.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This Letter presents a search for a hidden-beauty counterpart of the X ( 3872 ) in the mass ranges of 10.05–10.31 GeV and 10.40–11.00 GeV, in the channel <SUB> X b </SUB> → <SUP> π + </SUP> <SUP> π − </SUP> ϒ ( 1 S ) ( → <SUP> μ + </SUP> <SUP> μ − </SUP> ) , using 16.2 fb<SUP>−1</SUP> of s = 8 TeV <I>pp</I> collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No evidence for new narrow states is found, and upper limits are set on the product of the <SUB> X b </SUB> cross section and branching fraction, relative to those of the ϒ ( 2 S ) , at the 95% confidence level using the <SUB> CL S </SUB> approach. These limits range from 0.8% to 4.0%, depending on mass. For masses above 10.1 GeV, the expected upper limits from this analysis are the most restrictive to date. Searches for production of the ϒ ( <SUP> 1 3 </SUP> <SUB> D J </SUB> ) , ϒ ( 10 860 ) , and ϒ ( 11 020 ) states also reveal no significant signals.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A search is reported for Higgs boson decay to <SUP> μ + </SUP> <SUP> μ − </SUP> using data with an integrated luminosity of 24.8 <SUP> fb − 1 </SUP> collected with the ATLAS detector in <I>pp</I> collisions at s = 7 and 8 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The observed dimuon invariant mass distribution is consistent with the Standard Model background-only hypothesis in the 120–150 GeV search range. For a Higgs boson with a mass of 125.5 GeV, the observed (expected) upper limit at the 95% confidence level is 7.0 (7.2) times the Standard Model expectation. This corresponds to an upper limit on the branching ratio BR ( H → <SUP> μ + </SUP> <SUP> μ − </SUP> ) of 1.5 × <SUP> 10 − 3 </SUP> .</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This Letter presents a search for new resonances decaying to final states with a vector boson produced in association with a high transverse momentum photon, <I>Vγ</I>, with V = W ( → ℓ ν ) or Z ( → <SUP> ℓ + </SUP> <SUP> ℓ − </SUP> ) , where ℓ = e or <I>μ</I>. The measurements use 20.3 fb<SUP>−1</SUP> of proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of s = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. No deviations from the Standard Model expectations are found, and production cross section limits are set at 95% confidence level. Masses of the hypothetical <SUB> a T </SUB> and <SUB> ω T </SUB> states of a benchmark Low Scale Technicolor model are excluded in the ranges [ 275 , 960 ] GeV and [ 200 , 700 ] ∪ [ 750 , 890 ] GeV , respectively. Limits at 95% confidence level on the production cross section of a singlet scalar resonance decaying to <I>Zγ</I> final states have also been obtained for masses below 1180 GeV.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Measurements of charged-particle fragmentation functions of jets produced in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions can provide insight into the modification of parton showers in the hot, dense medium created in the collisions. ATLAS has measured jets in <SUB> s NN </SUB> = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC using a data set recorded in 2011 with an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb<SUP>−1</SUP>. Jets were reconstructed using the anti- <SUB> k t </SUB> algorithm with distance parameter values R = 0.2 , 0.3 , and 0.4 . Distributions of charged-particle transverse momentum and longitudinal momentum fraction are reported for seven bins in collision centrality for R = 0.4 jets with p T jet > 100 GeV . Commensurate minimum <SUB> p T </SUB> values are used for the other radii. Ratios of fragment distributions in each centrality bin to those measured in the most peripheral bin are presented. These ratios show a reduction of fragment yield in central collisions relative to peripheral collisions at intermediate <I>z</I> values, 0.04 ≲ z ≲ 0.2 , and an enhancement in fragment yield for z ≲ 0.04 . A smaller, less significant enhancement is observed at large <I>z</I> and large <SUB> p T </SUB> in central collisions.</P>
Search for heavy long-lived charged particles with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at s=7 TeV

A search for long-lived charged particles reaching the muon spectrometer is performed using a data sample of 37 pb<SUP>-1</SUP> from pp collisions at s=7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010. No excess is observed above the estimated background. Stable τ@? sleptons are excluded at 95% CL up to a mass of 136 GeV, in GMSB models with N<SUB>5</SUB>=3, m<SUB>messenger</SUB>=250 TeV, sign(μ)=1 and tanβ=5. Electroweak production of sleptons is excluded up to a mass of 110 GeV. Gluino R-hadrons in a generic interaction model are excluded up to masses of 530 GeV to 544 GeV depending on the fraction of R-hadrons produced as g@?-balls.

<P>The ratio of the production cross sections for [FORMULA OMISSION] and [FORMULA OMISSION] bosons in association with jets has been measured in proton–proton collisions at [FORMULA OMISSION] with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on the entire 2011 dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of [FORMULA OMISSION]. Inclusive and differential cross-section ratios for massive vector bosons decaying to electrons and muons are measured in association with jets with transverse momentum [FORMULA OMISSION] and jet rapidity [FORMULA OMISSION]. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations and to predictions from different Monte Carlo generators implementing leading-order matrix elements supplemented by parton showers.</P>

<P>The integrated elliptic flow of charged particles produced in Pb+Pb collisions at [FORMULA OMISSION] TeV has been measured with the ATLAS detector using data collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The anisotropy parameter, [FORMULA OMISSION], was measured in the pseudorapidity range [FORMULA OMISSION] with the event-plane method. In order to include tracks with very low transverse momentum [FORMULA OMISSION], thus reducing the uncertainty in [FORMULA OMISSION] integrated over [FORMULA OMISSION], a [FORMULA OMISSION] data sample recorded without a magnetic field in the tracking detectors is used. The centrality dependence of the integrated [FORMULA OMISSION] is compared to other measurements obtained with higher [FORMULA OMISSION] thresholds. The integrated elliptic flow is weakly decreasing with [FORMULA OMISSION]. The integrated [FORMULA OMISSION] transformed to the rest frame of one of the colliding nuclei is compared to the lower-energy RHIC data.</P>

<P>A search is presented for direct top squark pair production using events with at least two leptons including a same-flavour opposite-sign pair with invariant mass consistent with the [FORMULA OMISSION] boson mass, jets tagged as originating from [FORMULA OMISSION]-quarks and missing transverse momentum. The analysis is performed with proton–proton collision data at [FORMULA OMISSION] collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2012 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb[FORMULA OMISSION]. No excess beyond the Standard Model expectation is observed. Interpretations of the results are provided in models based on the direct pair production of the heavier top squark state ([FORMULA OMISSION]) followed by the decay to the lighter top squark state ([FORMULA OMISSION]) via [FORMULA OMISSION], and for [FORMULA OMISSION] pair production in natural gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking scenarios where the neutralino ([FORMULA OMISSION]) is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and decays producing a [FORMULA OMISSION] boson and a gravitino ([FORMULA OMISSION]) via the [FORMULA OMISSION] process.</P>
