A nationwide comparative study between private and public university students' soft skills

Abdul Malek Abdul Karim 서울대학교 교육연구소 2012 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.13 No.3

The main function of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) is to produce skilled and knowledgeable workforce who are able to not only function with minimal guidance but also to contribute effectively to the hiring organizations. Many studies have indicated that most HEIs have somewhat similar course content and thrived at producing students with good academic achievement. But what differentiated them from one another is their ability to develop knowledge workers with the right employability skills or 'soft skills' such as communication, problem-solving, interpersonal and other skills deemed important as the foundations by which they require to function at work regardless of the nature of employment. This paper reports findings of a large-scale study looking into the soft skills attainment of Malaysian HEI graduates. A quantitative survey design was employed whereby data were obtained through the administration of an instrument called the Malaysian Soft Skills Scale (My3S). My3S consists of 180 items covering seven elements namely Communications, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Teamwork, Moral and Professional Ethics, Leadership, Life Long Learning and Entrepreneurial aspects. The mean scores for the seven My3S subscales were found to be between 6.3 and 7.8 from the maximum possible score of 10. Specifically, comparisons were made between graduates of public and private institutions with respect to the seven elements. Findings of the study suggest that, in general, students of public HEIs scored higher in all seven skills. With respect to gender, male students scored higher than female students in all elements except for teamwork skills and moral and professional ethics. A comparison between fields of study showed that for both types of HEIs, technical students scored the highest in all skills except for moral and professional ethics. Based on the findings of this study, it is suggested that in addition to offering specific courses to improve soft skills attainment, HEIs need to embed soft skills in their academic curricula.

The Impact of Global Oil Price Fluctuations on Economic Growth in Iraq by using VAR Model

Abdul Rahman Karim Abdul Ridha Al-Taie,Hussein Breesam Habeeb,Saad H. Khalaf 대한산업공학회 2022 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.21 No.4

In this research economic growth is one of the concepts that developed and developing countries alike have been taken into account. This research touched on the most important components of the Iraqi oil sector. The role of this sector and the extent of its contribution to the gross domestic product, which is denominated in US dollars according to a base year 2010. Therefore, it became necessary to clarify the concept of economic growth. Thus, it became nec-essary for Iraq to maximize the rates of economic growth, which was closely linked to the oil sector, which has be-come the only sector that feeds the rest of the sectors. The researcher adopted a set of standard formulas to demon-strate the impact of oil price fluctuations on Iraqi economic growth, and concluded that: Vector Auto Regression model (VAR) is the model adopted for the data of the variables of the Iraqi economy. After conducting an estima-tion, it was discovered that the linear formula produced the best results and had the highest value for the determina-tion coefficient, and that the Cranger causality test revealed the existence of a statistically significant reciprocal rela-tionship between the variables considered for the period 1970-2015.

Hexagonal boron nitride-based composites: an overview of processing approaches and mechanical properties

        Abdul Karim Muhammad Ramzan,Khan Muhammad Awais,Zaman Atteeq Uz,Hussain Azhar 한국세라믹학회 2023 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.60 No.1

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)-based composites have been gaining prominence due to their versatile and significantly improved properties. For example they have good strength, better thermal conductivity, excellent resistance to thermal shocks and high temperatures, molten metal erosion resistance, ablation resistance, excellent machinability, good lubricating and chemical inertness. Owing to its excellent comprehensive properties, h-BN has significant potential applications in the fields of electronics, machinery, aerospace, nuclear energy, and metallurgy. Current article, first tries to critically review the literature, mainly published in the last decade, exploring the peculiar crystal structure and enhanced properties of h-BN and then various h-BN-based ceramics and its composites with oxides, nitrides, carbides, metals, and complex ceramics have been discussed based on their fabrication methods, mechanical properties, and the resultant applications. As per the reviewed results, hot pressing results in enhanced mechanical properties such as fracture toughness and flexural strength owing to the incorporation of BN by in situ reaction, which prevents BN agglomeration and reduces the size and quantity of defects. In contrast, the pressureless sintering method is reported to cause poor mechanical properties as compared to other fabrication methods of h-BN ceramics due to large porosity and poor bonding between h-BN grains caused by the forming of card room structure. Consequently, the green body's shrinkage is obstructed, and the expansion is occurred during the sintering process. All these aspects have been discussed in detail and they are the part of this review article.

Effect of Top Sheet Materials on Joint Performance of Self-Piercing Riveting

        Karim Md Abdul,Murugan Sivaprasad,배기만,백종진,지창욱,노우람,이한주,Jang Will,김덕봉,박영도 대한용접접합학회 2022 대한용접·접합학회지 Vol.40 No.6

Three types of self-piercing riveting (SPR) joints, i.e., steel/aluminum, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)/ aluminum, and aluminum/aluminum, were constructed using three different top sheet materials with the same alumi- num alloy as the bottom sheet. The effects of the top sheet material on the joint quality and mechanical behavior were evaluated. The top sheet materials’ characteristics dominate the rivet piercing process and the consequent inter- lock distance. The high-strength steel top sheet requires a comparatively higher rivet setting force and induces early flaring of the rivet tail, resulting in a larger interlock distance. Though the CFRP needs the highest rivet setting force to penetrate the rivet through the CFRP fibers, the CFRP/aluminum joint exhibits the smallest interlock distance be- cause of the SPR process-induced damages to the CFRP and subsequently less flaring of the rivet tail. In strength tests, the damaged CFRP sheet resulted in rivet head pullout of the CFRP/aluminum joints, which exhibited the low- est lap-shear and cross-tension strengths. In contrast, the steel/aluminum joints demonstrated the highest strengths because of their comparatively larger interlock distances. In addition to the experimental analysis, simulations re- vealed the rivet penetration and flaring mechanisms with various top sheet materials, and their respective joint qual- ity and strengths.

A Review on Welding of Dissimilar Metals in Car Body Manufacturing

        Md. Abdul Karim,Yeong-Do Park 대한용접·접합학회 2020 대한용접·접합학회지 Vol.38 No.1

This paper presents a comprehensive study of the metallurgical challenges of welding dissimilar metals. It also describes the important factors in dissimilar welding which need to be considered for automotive applications. It further investigates effective approaches to overcome these present challenges. Steels, aluminum alloys, and magnesium alloys are widely used metals in car bodies. However, it is difficult to weld these dissimilar metals and achieve good joint quality, due to their inherent disparate properties. The formation of brittle, crack sensitive and corrosion susceptible intermetallic phases is the main obstacle to dissimilar weld quality. Various approaches have been attempted by many researchers to enhance the performance of dissimilar welds. The most notable efforts include the application of interlayers, cover plate, least heat input, a combination of welding and mechanical joining, and alloying elements of filler metals. Based on considerations of joint performance, production cost and time, present industry infrastructure, and so on, the most effective and feasible approaches were identified which required the least amount of heat input, and the appropriate filler metal alloying elements.

Portfolio Diversification Benefits of Cryptocurrencies and ASEAN-5 Stock Markets

Bakri Abdul KARIM,Aisyah ABDUL-RAHMAN,Josephine Yau Tan HWANG,Norlina KADRI 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.6

This paper examines the portfolio diversification benefits in the cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, Stellar and Dash) and ASEAN-5 stock markets (Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Philippines). Cointegration and Granger causality tests are used in this study for the period from August 2015 to October 2019. We found evidence of no cointegration among the cryptocurrencies. Thus, the cryptocurrencies market provides an opportunity for the potential benefits from portfolio diversification and hedging strategies. However, cointegration is found between cryptocurrencies and ASEAN-5 stock markets thus indicating limited portfolio diversification benefits in the long-run among these markets. In addition, the results also show that ASEAN-5 stock markets are going towards a greater integration among them which is in congruence with the previous studies. However, in the short-run, Granger causality tests show that Dash, Ethereum, Lite, Ripple and Stellar have no causality relationship with all ASEAN-5 stock markets and no causality is also found between Bitcoin and three of ASEAN-5 stock markets (Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines). Therefore, there still exists an opportunity for portfolio diversification between cryptocurrencies and ASEAN-5 stock markets in the short-run. The findings of this study suggest that crypto-investors, international investors and fund managers can diversify their investments in both cryptocurrencies and the ASEAN-5 stock markets.

Critical Influence of Rivet Head Height on Corrosion Performance of CFRP/Aluminum Self-Piercing Riveted Joints

        ( Md Abdul Karim ),( Jin-hee Bae ),( Dong-hyuck Kam ),( Cheolhee Kim ),( Yeong-do Park ) 한국부식방식학회 2019 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.18 No.3

This study investigates how rivet head height affects the corrosion performance of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) to aluminum alloy self-piercing riveted joints. Specimens with two different head heights were prepared. A rivet head protruding out of the top CFRP laminate forms the proud head height while a rivet head penetrating into the top CFRP generates the flush head height. The salt spray test evaluated corrosion performance. The flush head joints suffered from severe corrosion on the rivet head. Thus, the tensile shear load of flush head joints was substantially reduced. Electrochemical corrosion tests investigated the corrosion mechanisms. The deeper indentation of the flush head height damaged the CFRP around the rivet head. The exposure of damaged fibers from the matrix increased the cathodic potential of local CFRP. The increased potential of damaged CFRP accelerated the galvanic corrosion of the rivet head. After the rivet head coating material corroded, a strong galvanic couple was formed between the rivet head base metal (boron steel) and the damaged CFRP, further accelerating the flush rivet head corrosion. The results of this study suggest that rivet head flushness should be avoided to enhance the corrosion performance of CFRP to aluminum alloy self-piercing riveted joints.
