Electrodeposition of Silicon from Fluorosilicic Acid Produced in Iraqi Phosphate Fertilizer Plant
Abbar, Ali H.,Kareem, Sameer H.,Alsaady, Fouad A. The Korean Electrochemical Society 2011 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.2 No.3
The availability, low toxicity, and high degree of technological development make silicon the most likely material to be used in solar cells, the cost of solar cells depends entirely on cost of high purity silicon production. The present work was conducted to electrodeposite of silicon from $K_2SiF_6$, an inexpensive raw material prepared from fluorosilicic acid ($H_2SiF_6$) produced in Iraqi Fertilizer plants, and using inexpensive graphite material as cathode electrode. The preparation of potassium fluorosilicate was performed at ($60^{\circ}C$) in a three necks flask provided with a stirrer, while the electro deposition was performed at $750^{\circ}C$ in a three-electrodes configuration with melt containing in graphite pot. High purity potassium fluorosilicate (99.25%) was obtained at temperature ($60^{\circ}C$), molar ratio-KCl/$H_2SiF_6$(1.4) and agitation (600 rpm). Spongy compact deposits were obtained for silicon with purity not less than (99.97%) at cathode potential (-0.8 V vs. Pt), $K_2SiF_6$ concentration (14% mole percent) with grain size (130 ${\mu}m$) and level of impurities (Cu, Fe and Ni) less than (0.02%).

The electrocatalytic oxidative behavior of an antiarrhythmic drug, procainamide hydrochloride (PAH) at the gold electrode surface has been examined using different voltammetric methods like cyclic, linear-sweep and differential pulse voltammetry. Voltammograms obtained in this study reveal that the electrode exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity towards oxidation of the drug. The parameters that can affect the peak current at different pH, scan rate and concentration were evaluated. The number of electrons transferred was calculated. The current displayed a wide linear response ranging from 0.5 to $30.0{\mu}M$ with a limit of detection of 56.4 nM. The impact of potential interfering agents was also studied. The electrode displayed wide advantages such as simple sample preparation, appreciable repeatability, reproducibility and also high sensitivity. Furthermore, the feasibility of the proposed method was successfully demonstrated by determining PAH in the spiked human biological sample.
Mass Transfer to Amalgamated Copper Rotating Disk Electrode
Sulaymon, Abbas H.,Abbar, Ali H. The Korean Electrochemical Society 2012 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.3 No.4
An experimental study of mass transfer to an amalgamated copper rotating disc electrode has been employed to determine an empirical correlation for the mass transfer rate in laminar flow. The study was performed in a three-electrodes configuration using 0.1 M boric acid and 0.1M potassium chloride as supporting electrolyte with Zn (II) concentration in the range (25-100 mg $dm^{-3}$). Polarization curves at different zinc ion concentration are reported. Hydrogen and oxygen reduction has also been considered. The diffusion coefficients and mass transfer coefficient were obtained using limiting diffusion current technique based on zinc ion reduction. A least squares analysis indicates that the laminar flow results for 13067 < Re > 57552 and 550 < Sc > 1390 can be correlated by the following equation with correlation coefficient (CR) equal to 0.98: $sh=0.61Re^{0.5}Sc^{1/3}$.

Spiral-wound woven wire meshes packed bed rotating cylinder electrode was used for the simultaneous removal of cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) from a binary solution. The effects of weight percent of each metal on the removal and current efficiencies were studied at an operating current of 345A, while the effect of current on the removal efficiency of both metals was investigated at three levels of current (240, 345.and 400 mA). The experiments were carried out at constant rotation speed 800 rpm, pH = 3, and a total concentration of metals (500 ppm). The results showed that the removal efficiency of copper increased from 89% to 99.4% as its weight percent increased from 20% to100%. In a similar fashion, the removal efficiency of cadmium increased from 81% to 97% as its weight percent increased from 20% to100%. The results confirmed that the removal efficiency of any metals declined in the presence of the other. Increasing of current resulted in increasing the removal efficiency of both metals at different weight percents. The results confirmed that current efficiencies for removing of copper and cadmium simultaneously decline with increasing of electrolysis time and weight percent of cadmium or with decreasing the weight percent of copper. Current efficiency was higher at the initial stage of electrolysis for all weight percents of metals. The results showed that the decay of copper concentration was exponential at all weight percents of copper, confirming that the electrodeposition of copper is under mass transfer control in the presence of cadmium. While the decay of cadmium concentration was linear at lower weight percent of cadmium then changed to an exponential behavior at high weight percent of cadmium in the presence of copper.

Cd-Pb thin films were electrodeposited from a diluted chloride solution using stainless steel rotating disc electrode. The linear sweep voltammograms of the single metallic ions show that electrodeposition of these ions was mass transfer control due to the plateau observed for different rotations at concentration (50 and 200 ppm). The voltammograms of binary system elucidate that electrodeposition process always start at cathodic potential located between the potential of individual metals. Currents transients measurements, anodic linear sweep voltammetry (ALSV) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the electrocryatalization process and morphology of thin films. ALSV profiles show a differentiation for the dissolution process of individual metals and binary system. Two peaks of dissolution Cd-Pb film were observed for the binary system with different metal ion concentration ratios. The model of Scharifker and Hills was used to analyze the current transients and it revealed that Cd-Pb electrocrystalization processes at low concentration is governed by three-dimensional progressive nucleation controlled by diffusion, while at higher concentration starts as a progressive nucleation then switch to instantaneous nucleation process. AFM images reveal that Cd-Pb film electrodeposited at low concentration is more roughness than Cd-Pb film electrodeposited at high concentrated solution.

Environmental pollution is experiencing an alarming surge within the global ecosystem, warranting urgent attention. Among the significant challenges that demand immediate resolution, effective treatment of industrial pollutants stands out prominently, which for decades has been the focus of most researchers for sustainable industrial development aiming to remove those pollutants and recover some of them. The liquid membrane (LM) method, specifically electromembrane extraction (EME), offers promise. EME deploys an electric field, reducing extraction time and energy use while staying eco-friendly. However, theres a crucial knowledge gap. Despite strides in understanding and applying EME, optimizing it for diverse industrial pollutants and environmental conditions remains uncharted. Future research must expand EMEs applicability, assess its environmental impact versus other methods, and boost scalability, cost-effectiveness, and energy efficiency in industry. Advances in novel liquid membrane materials can enhance extraction efficiency and selectivity, aiming to provide efficient, sustainable industrial pollutant treatment. This research provides a review of the existing practices in the field of liquid membranes when coupled with the application of an electric field.
