Frondoside A is a pentaoside having an acetyl moiety at the aglycon ring and xylose as a third monosaccharide residue. Cucumarioside A<SUB>2</SUB>-2 is a pentaoside having glucose as a third monosaccahride unit. We compared the effects of frondoside A and A<SUB>2</SUB>-2 for cell death-inducing capability with close attention paid to structure-activity relationships. Both frondoside A and A<SUB>2</SUB>-2 strongly induced apoptosis of leukemic cells. Frondoside A-induced apoptosis was more potent and rapid than A<SUB>2</SUB>-2-induced apoptosis. A<SUB>2</SUB>-2-induced but not frondoside A-induced apoptosis was caspase-dependent. This suggests that holothurians may induce apoptosis of leukemic cells caspase-dependently or -independently, depending on the holothurian structure.

We performed an analysis of the effect of postharvest treatment of rhizomes of Aconitum septentrionale Koelle with the biological preparation of Bacispecin based on a cytokinin producing strain of Paenibacillus ehimensis IB-739 on the content of alkaloid lappaconitine in rhizomes. The total alkaloid content was assayed based on exhaustive extraction method. The lappaconitine content was measured by HPLC. The efficiency of the preparation was dependant on either the concentration or intensity of the growth processes in rhizomes. Both parameters varied depending on the stage of development of plants and the amount of precipitation. In the years with normal precipitation, concentrations of Bacispecin ranging from 5 to 10 g/l were found to be most effective for increasing lappaconitine content in rhizomes of A. septentrionale. Whereas, under local drought conditions, the concentration of preparation should be less than 2 g/l.

Ceramics of quaternary garnets (Gd,Y)3Al2Ga3O12 doped with Ce, Tb have been fabricated and evaluated as prospective materials for indirect energy converters of a-and b-voltaic. Samples were characterized at excitation with an X-ray source and an intense 150 keV electron beam and showed good temperature stability of their emission and tolerance to irradiation. The role of X-rays accompanied the a-particle emitting in the increase of the conversion efficiency is clarified. The garnet-type structure of the matrix in the developed materials allows the production of quality crystalline mass with a light yield exceeding that of the commonly used YAG: Ce scintillator by a factor of two times

Composite scintillation screens on a base of Gd1.2Y1.8Ga2.5Al2.5O12:Ce (GYAGG) scintillator have beenevaluated for neutron detection. Besides the powdered scintillator, the composite includes 6LiF particles;both are merged with a binder and deposited onto the light-reflecting aluminum substrate. Resultsobtained demonstrates that screens are suitable for use with a silicon photomultiplier readout to create aprospective solution for a compact and low-cost thermal neutron sensor. Composite GYAGG/6LiF scintillationscreen shows a pretty matched sensitivity and g-background rejection with a widely usedZnS/6LiF screens however, possesses forty times faster response.

Single-phase polycrystalline samples of Sm1Ba2Cu3O6+y (123 SmSS) with x = 0.0-0.7 were prepared in air by solid state synthesis with precisely controlled technological parameters (the heating and cooling rates, temperature-time regime). Microstructural, structural, and superconducting properties were studied. It is shown that cation stoichiometric samples of Sm1Ba2Cu3O6+y with a high temperature superconducting transition (89-92K) can be obtained in air. By increasing the Sm/Ba ratio in Sm1+xBa2-xCu3O6+y the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition is observed. The orthorhombic phase loses its stability at x > 0.125, and the solid solution decomposes by a spinodal mechanism to form layered microstructures with a variable Sm/ Ba ratio. The data obtained are useful for understanding the mechanisms of the formation of possible vortex pinning centers in Ln1+xBa2-xCu3O6+y phases. <P>For the first time, lonsdaleite-rich impact diamonds from one of the largest Popigai impact crater (Northern Siberia) with a high concentration of structural defects are investigated under hydrostatic compression up to 25 GPa. It is found that, depending on the nature of a sample, the bulk modulus for lonsdaleite experimentally obtained by X-ray diffraction in diamond-anvil cells is systematically lower and equal to 93.3-100.5% of the average values of the bulk moduli of a diamond matrix. Density functional theory calculations reveal possible coexistence of a number of diamond/lonsdaleite and twin diamond biphases. Among the different mutual configurations, separate inclusions of one lonsdaleite (001) plane per four diamond (111) demonstrate the lowest energy per carbon atom, suggesting a favorable formation of single-layer lonsdaleite (001) fragments inserted in the diamond matrix. Calculated formation energies and experimental diamond (311) and lonsdaleite (331) powder X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that all biphases could be formed under high-temperature, high-pressure conditions. Following the equation of states, the bulk modulus of the diamond (111)/lonsdaleite (001) biphase is the largest one among all bulk moduli, including pristine diamond and lonsdaleite.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
Sensitivity of GAGG based scintillation neutron detector with SiPM readout

Here we report on the first results of sensitivity evaluation of the gadolinium-aluminum-gallium- garnet (GAGG) scintillation detector with SiPM readout to fast and slow neutrons and, to the natural background and Co-60 γ-radiation as well. Data on sensitivity were obtained using certified dosimetry benches, so it can be utilized in the calculation of detection limits of neutron flux with such type of detectors. It was concluded that use of GAGG scintillator has a good prospect for neutron monitoring in different parts of nuclear research reactors and power plants.

The complex is the first demonstration of any chalcogenide hexanuclear clusters coordinated with acetic acid anions.</P><ce:figure></ce:figure> <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A room-temperature reaction between [Re<SUB>6</SUB>S<SUB>8</SUB>(OH)<SUB>6</SUB>]<SUP>4−</SUP> and acetic acid in an aqueous solution resulted in the substitution of all terminal hydroxo groups by acetate ligands, affording a new hexanuclear anionic rhenium cluster complex [Re<SUB>6</SUB>S<SUB>8</SUB>(CH<SUB>3</SUB>COO)<SUB>6</SUB>]<SUP>4−</SUP>. The complex was isolated as a potassium salt with the composition of K<SUB>4</SUB>[Re<SUB>6</SUB>S<SUB>8</SUB>(CH<SUB>3</SUB>COO)<SUB>6</SUB>]·8H<SUB>2</SUB>O (<B>1</B>) and characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction and elemental analyses, IR, <SUP>1</SUP>H NMR, UV–Vis, and luminescence spectroscopies.</P>
