Abstract

This study aimed to examine the sex-specific association between serum sex hormones and gonadotropins and the cerebral beta-amyloid (Aβ) burden and hippocampal neurodegeneration in subjects with normal cognition and impaired cognition. Two hundred sixty-five older subjects received clinical assessments, serum measurements of sex hormones, gonadotropins, 11C-Pittsburgh compound B-positron emission tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. In females, higher free testosterone and gonadotropin levels were associated with lower cerebral Aβ positivity. In males, free testosterone was positively related to hippocampal volume with significant interaction with cognitive status. Further subgroup analyses showed that the association was significant only in impaired cognition but not in normal cognition. Free estradiol was not associated with Aβ burden or hippocampal neurodegeneration in either sex. These results suggest that testosterone might inhibit the early pathological accumulation of Aβ in females and delay neurodegeneration in males.

We study liberals and conservatives in the United States and Korea to see how they respond to charity advertising that appeals to either equality or proportionality. The findings robustly demonstrate that in both countries, liberals respond more favorably to equality appeals, but conservatives respond more favorably to proportionality appeals. Study 1, conducted in the United States, finds that liberals find equality appeals more effective, but conservatives find proportionality appeals more effective. Study 2, conducted in Korea, shows that liberals (conservatives) estimate that they are more (less) likely to receive rewards for donating when charity advertising uses equality rather than proportionality appeals.
Intravenous fluid prescription practices among pediatric residents in Korea
Lee, Jiwon M.,Jung, Younghwa,Lee, Se Eun,Lee, Jun Ho,Kim, Kee Hyuck,Koo, Ja Wook,Park, Young Seo,Cheong, Hae Il,Ha, Il-Soo,Choi, Yong,Kang, Hee Gyung The Korean Pediatric Society 2013 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.56 No.7
Purpose: Recent studies have established the association between hypotonic fluids administration and hospital-acquired hyponatremia in children, and have contended that hypotonic fluids be removed from routine practice. To assess current intravenous fluid prescription practices among Korean pediatric residents and to call for updated clinical practice education Methods: A survey-based analysis was carried out. Pediatric residents at six university hospitals in Korea completed a survey consisting of four questions. Each question supposed a unique scenario in which the respondents were to prescribe either a hypotonic or an isotonic fluid for the patient. Results: Ninety-one responses were collected and analyzed. In three of the four scenarios, a significant majority prescribed the hypotonic fluids (98.9%, 85.7%, and 69.2%, respectively). Notably, 69.2% of the respondents selected the hypotonic fluids for postoperative management. Almost all (96.7%) selected the isotonic fluids for hydration therapy. Conclusion: In the given scenarios, the majority of Korean pediatric residents would prescribe a hypotonic fluid, except for initial hydration. The current state of pediatric fluid management, notably, heightens the risk of hospital-acquired hyponatremia. Updated clinical practice education on intravenous fluid prescription, therefore, is urgently required.
Exploring the Talk in EFL Students’ Peer Feedback

Peer feedback (PF) can be an important component in teaching and learning writing. This study investigated the content of PF and students’ perspectives about PF in two EFL writing classrooms at a Korean university. The data comprise sixty-five students’ written comments and their opinion writing on PF. The findings reveal that students’ comments included mainly ‘statements’ and ‘praises’ with significant high scores. The strengths of PF were students’ ‘knowledge about concepts’ for getting ideas and recognition of their grammatical problems through peers’ work. Regarding weaknesses of PF, students felt that their peers were not qualified to revise the grammatical aspects and tended to distrust their peers’ recommendations. As an ideal type of feedback, students preferred anonymous PF to teacher feedback. These findings show the importance of choosing not only what ways of PF are effective in a given context, but what effect of the selected way might have on the improvement of students’ writing.

To study the relevance of the activation of toll-like receptor-2 and abnormal behavioral properties, we introduced prenatal zymosan, a toll-like receptor-2 ligand, to investigate the effect of maternal immunity on offspring behavior. Only female offspring showed impaired social and cognitive function, suggesting that zymosan may influence females' behavior. Copyright (C) 2016 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. All rights reserved.

The Meaning-making and Negotiation in Korean EFL Students' Letter Writing
Lee, Younghwa 한국영어교육학회 2004 ENGLISH TEACHING(영어교육) Vol.59 No.1
The fact that the entrance exam system for entering university has no writing component makes writing in English the least taught element in any curriculum area in Korea. This immediate environment of writing pedagogy might shape the overall values, and affect the prevailing patterns of teaching and learning of writing in English. This paper discusses students’ letter writing in the final assessment of an EFL writing classroom at a university in Korea, undertaking a qualitative approach. The data comprise interviews and a selection of 10 examples of letter writing. The findings revealed that students engaged in unique ways in which they oriented their meaning-making to broad views concerning rhetorics and components through a Goal-Will pattern and content analysis of the 10 letters in English. The approaches of the students involve a particular context, and they attempt to reorganize the recontextualized English formal letter, which reflects the students’ negotiation of interaction with letter writing in English. This paper concludes that we can understand that learning context involves specific discourse communities, and life-world, learning experience, and learning purposes inside/outside classrooms impact on students’ EFL writing.

This study aims at exploring features of Korean university students’ written text, focusing on the written voice, rhetorical patterns, and writing practices through English letters. The data comprised examples of students’ English job applications, and a ‘purpose-will’ model was adopted for the data analysis. The findings showed that the students used unique ways of strategies to convey their voice in a recontextualized setting. Their written voice in the job applications were various, and nobody applied the Korean convention of weather opening. Their rhetorical patterns were a transformation from convergence to divergence, showing integrated patterns of written voice. Students’ writing practices revealed their internal values of writing for a task, and they do not directly learn from the teachers syllabus. This supports the sociocultural framework that learning is a situated activity in a specific discourse community. The study concludes that writing teachers should understand that life-world and learning experience can impact on students’ written voice and practices.
