Pyrolysis reaction of biomass feedstocks is well known as a promising route for producing bio-crude, as fuels. However, unfortunately, the fuel quality of the bio-crude is still unsuitable to be directly applied to engines of vehicles. Therefore, physical or chemical treatments are essential to enhance the fuel quality of the bio-crude, such as higher heating value, total acid number, and water content. In this research, a packed bed reaction system for the bio-crude upgrading was developed and operated under supercritical conditions, at 300°C and 250 bar, with no external hydrogen source. Pyrolysis oil of spent coffee grounds was used as a starting material for the catalytic upgrading reaction. Ni-based mesoporous catalysts were employed in the reaction system, and ethanol was used as a reaction medium for donating hydrogen radicals. Liquid products were analyzed with GC/MS, EA, titration methods, and gas products were also quantified by GC equipment.
