Obesity has become a major health threat in developed countries. However, current medications for obesity are limited because of their adverse effects. Interest in natural products for the treatment of obesity is thus rapidly growing. Korean Medicine (KM) is characterized by the wide use of herbal formulas. However, the combination rule of herbal formulas in KM lacks experimental evidence. According to Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, the earliest book of herbal medicine, Veratrum nigrum (VN) has antagonistic features against Panax ginseng (PG), and the PG-VN pair is strictly forbidden. In this study, we have shown the effects of PG, VN, and their combination on obesity in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese mice and in 3T3-L1 cells. PG, VN, and PG-VN combination significantly reduced weight gain and the fat pad weight in HF diet-induced obese mice. They also significantly decreased lipid accumulation and the expressions of two major adipogenesis factors, PPARγ and C/EBPα, in 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, the PG-VN combination had synergistic effects compared with the mixture of extracts of PG and VN on inhibition of PPARγ and C/EBPα expressions at lower doses. These results indicate a new potential anti-obese pharmacotherapy and also provide scientific evidence supporting the usage of herbal combinations instead of mixtures in KM.

Real-time Gap Control for Micro-EDM: Application in a Microfactory
Jung, Jae-Won,Ko, Seok-Hoon,Jeong, Young-Hun,Min, Byung-Kwon,Lee, Sang-Jo Korean Society for Precision Engineering 2008 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.9 No.1
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is one of the most widespread nonconventional machining processes. Recently, a low-power micro-EDM process was introduced using a cylindrical electrode. Since its development, micro-EDM has been applied effectively to micromachining, and because the device setup for this process is simple, it is suitable for a microfactory that minimizes machines to fabricate small products economically in one system. In the EDM process, however, the electrode is also removed along with the workpiece. Therefore, the electrode shape and length vary as machining progresses. In this paper, a control method using a high speed realtime voltage measurement is proposed to regulate the rate and amount of material removed. The proposed method is based on the assumption that the volume of the workpiece removed in a single discharge pulses is nearly constant. The discharge pulses are monitored and controlled to regulate the amount of material removed. For this purpose, we developed an algorithm and apparatus for counting the number of discharge pulses. Electrode wear compensation using pulse number information was applied to EDM milling in a microfactory, in which a slight tilt of the workpiece may occur. The proposed control method improves the machining quality and efficiency by eliminating the inaccuracies caused by electrode wear and workpiece tilt.

Oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to the pathogenesis of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. We found that genistein, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor with broad specificities, and which also has estrogen-like activity, had protective effects on cisplatin-induced renal injury in mice. Genistein significantly decreased reactive oxygen species production, the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 proteins, as well as the translocation of the p65 subunit of nuclear factor-κB into the nucleus and the infiltration of macrophages, all of which were increased in the kidney by cisplatin treatment. Genistein also decreased cisplatin-induced apoptosis by regulating p53 induction in kidney. Genistein significantly reduced reactive oxygen species production in cisplatin-treated normal human kidney HK-2 cells. These studies show that genistein or similar compounds might be useful in prevention of cisplatin-induced renal injury.Kidney International (2008) 74, 1538–1547; doi:10.1038/ki.2008.409; published online 20 August 2008

Fifteen chalcones and three thiazolidinedione (TZD) chalcones were prepared to evaluate their peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) ligand-binding activities. Among the three TZDs, one compound possessed PPAR-γ transactivation potential, while the others showed antagonistic activity against PPAR-γ transactivation. Among the chalcones, compound 5 was the most potent, and structure–activity relationship studies indicated that a methoxyl group in position C-4 and hydroxyl group in position C-4′ or 5′ in chalcone plays a key role in determining the potency of PPAR-γ activation.

Intelligent packaging is a food packaging system, which can monitor and inform food conditions to consumers in real time. In this work, we successfully fabricated chitosan/PVA blend films with anthocyanines extracted from Brassica oleraceae (red cabbage) by electrospinning technique, using water as solvent media. The prepared samples were characterized by SEM, UV, and FT-IR analysis. The color variation under different pH solutions was measured through the CIELab scale. The results show that electrospun chitosan/PVA films with red cabbage is very sensitive to pH variations. Therefore, it has high potential to be used as a color indicator of food quality changes through the detection of changes in the pH of packaged food products.
