Flow Control of a Solenoid Gas Injector and Its Application on a Natural Gas Engine

An air-fuel ratio control is essential in reducing hazardous exhaust emissions from a compressed natural gas(CNG) engine, and can be accomplished by accurate control of gas injection flow. In this study, theoretical research was conducted on injection characteristics of a solenoid gas injector, and injection experiments for calibration and analysis were performed. Various factors for gas injection flow such as injection pressure, gas temperature, and supply voltage are studied. A dynamic flow equation of the CNG was proposed on the basis of flow dynamics theories and results of the injection experiment. The verification of the dynamic flow equation of the solenoid injector was carried out with a large CNG engine applied to an urban bus. Air-fuel ratio control experiments were conducted in both steady and transient state. Results of injection experiments for the solenoid injector and the CNG engine was proved the control method proposed herein to be effective.

The ECT(Electronic Control throttle) has improved capabilities of several types of control devices and been recognized as a very important technology securing safety and convenience. In this system, servo-motor connected with throttle valve control engine rpm. Applicability of integrated control system and its effects were investigated by discussing the control methods and characteristics of technology related to control system of the ECT. From the experimental results, the control system of the ECT using stepping motor has been found to have an excellent ability to control, and to be expected to be an important fundamental technology to construct integrated control system with the technology related to it.

Solenoid injectors are able to inject precisely and rapidly fluid during short time. Speed of an armature-needle in the solenoid injector is affected by magnetic motive force, mass of the armature-needle, and return spring. In this paper, injection control characteristics of the solenoid injector are studied such as electro-magnetic characteristics, dynamics of the armature-needle-spring, and fluid dynamics in injection nozzle. Static and dynamic injection mass for on-time variation of the solenoid injector open signal are measured on a bench test. The experimental results show that fuel injection rate can be controlled precisely and the same results as theoretical analyses.
