본 논문은 道生의 ‘頓悟成佛論’으로부터 제시된 ‘頓悟’와 그와 관련된 頓漸論爭, 天台와 華嚴宗 兩宗에 있어서의 돈오설, 그리고 禪宗에 있어서 돈오론의 수용과 그 전개과정에 대하여 고찰하였다. 전통적인 불교의 ‘깨달음’에 대한 입장은 이른바 次第로 깨달음을 열어 가는 ‘漸悟’이지만, 중국에 불교가 전래되면서 중국인들의 사유양식과 사상경향 등의 요소들과 결합되어 새로운 방법론으로 대두된 것이 바로 ‘頓悟’라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 돈오의 제시는 이른바 頓漸論爭을 발생시키는데, 최종적으로는 중국불교의 모든 종파에서 돈오론이 수용되었고, 특히 깨달음을 극도로 강조하는 禪宗에 있어서는 핵심적인 禪理로서 자리하게 된다. 그러나 시대의 변화에 따라 불교학의 변천이 이루어지고, 그에 따라 돈오의 이론은 도생이 제시한 것과는 어느 정도 차별이 발생하게 된다. 그 대표적인 것이 바로 圭峯宗密의 돈오에 대한 새로운 해석이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 宗密의 영향을 받아 나타난 것이 高麗中期 韓國禪의 重興祖로 알려진 普照國師 知訥의 ‘頓悟漸修’라고 할 수 있다. 사실 ‘돈오론’이 지니고 있는 사상적 가치는 또한 무궁하다고 할 수 있다. 부분의 합은 전체가 될 수 있다는 가정 아래 진행되어 온 부분에 대한 심화연구에 대하여 최근에 일어난 전체는 전체를 대상으로 하여야만 참답게 전체를 볼 수 있다는 ‘全一主義(Wholism)’의 반론이 바로 ‘돈오론’의 입장임을 생각한다면, 돈오론이 지니는 뛰어난 논리성을 쉽게 짐작할 수 있는 것이다. 20세기에 서구에서 일어난 반론이 이미 5세기에 도생이라는 천재적 불교인에 의하여 제창되었던 것이다. 또한 동북아 불교의 역사 속에서 그것은 하나의 正統으로서 오늘날에 이르기까지 내려오고 있다. The essay is focused upon elucidating the doctrine of ‘Sudden Awakening’ in the Order of Tian-tai and Hua-yan, and the introduction and developing process of the Chan Order. 'Sudden Awakening' is referred to as a new methodology of being closely connected with such elements as Chinese thought and its trend in the course of introducing Buddhism into China. The Awakening of traditional Buddhism, however, is such ‘Gradual Awakening’ that a Buddhist makes the orderly stages of awakening. The introduction of 'Sudden Awakening' gave rise to the discussions of Sudden Awakening, and so the doctrine of 'Sudden Awakening' was presented in all the Buddhist Orders. In particular, it is uniquely regarded as the principle of Chan in the Chan Order that put a great emphasis upon the stage of awakening. However, different from original view of Dao-sheng, the doctrines of 'Sudden Awakening' were made according to the periodical transitions of Buddhism. One of the representative doctrines was the new interpretation of 'Sudden Awakening' by Zong-mi, and finally it led to Ji-nul's doctrine of 'Sudden Awakening and Gradual cultivation', which was one of Buddhist representatives in the dynasty of Corea. The doctrines of 'Sudden Awakening' and its logic can be understandable in the context of Wholism. In this sense, it can be possible to say that it has a tradition in the East Asia of Buddhism.
