The purpose of this study is to construct and standardise the Korean Vineland Social Maturity Scale. The first formation of the Vineland Social Maturity Scale was pubilished in April, 1935. The construction of the Korean Vineland Social Maturity Scale was based on the 1965-edition of the Vineland Social Maturity Scale. The underlying principles involved in the construction of this scale are much the same as those empolyed by Binet and Simon for their scale for measuring intelligence. The items of the scale represemt progressive maturation in self-help, self-direction, locomotion, occupation, communication and social relations. Standardixation data have been obtained for a total of 1,980 subjects from birth to thirty years of age. The scoring judgemant was done by the examiner trained for administering the scale after obtaining from the informant as much detail as practicable regarding the behavioristic facts which reveal the manner and extent of the subject's actual performance on each item. The informant was someone intimately familiar with the person scored. By employing the Thomson method of calculating average age norms for items(M=A+1-∑%/100), the items of the scale were arranged in order of normal average life age progression. They were also seperated in year groups according to the average age scores. Each item of the scale was given a categorical designation. The results from the sum if items passed by a given subject are reduced to age scores by interpolation according to the year score values. Age scores may be converted to quotients. The simplest procedure is divide the subject's age score by his life age and drop the decimal.
