Gas wiping process of continuously hot-dip galvanized coating on steel strip has noise and coating problems. To improve the qualify of product, characteristics of air flow on the steel surface must be investigated. In this paper, fluid dynamic model of the gas flow is setup and solved numerically using STAR-CD. The effects of edge baffle, distance between steel plane edge and baffle, inlet pressure, and gap between air knife and strip steel surface are investigated, and it is concluded that edge baffle can reduce over-coating and edge built-up.

A demand to reduce the indoor and outdoor noise of vehicle is increasing, and the regulation for the vehicle noise is becoming 80re strict. An exhaust muffler has been one of the simple and effective means to meet the demand for a quiet vehicle, and it deserves a close attention to effectively reduce the engine noise. The transfer function technique is one of the tools that have been used to analyze the noise characteristics of the exhaust muffler. In this paper we obtained a different form of the transfer function using the forward-going and backward-going component of sound pressure in the exhaust muffler, which is compatible with lattice filter algorithm. This form of transfer function is obtained for the basic elements of a muffler, and the results are combined to produce the transfer function of expansion-type and insertion-type mufflers. with this transfer functiom we calculate the transmission and insertion losses of mufflers, and proved the calculation with experimental results. This comparison showed a good agreement, and we conclude that the transfer function of lattice form can be used to analyze the noise characteristics of the exhaust mufflers.<br/>

ABSTRACT<br/> When developing a large bus, damper curves are primarily tuned to improve the ride and handling characteristics through the subjective feeling test. In order to save time and efforts, the optimization method is used to obtain the optimum characteristics of the dampers and springs which can improve ride and handling performance. We made a full vehicle model which consists of a body, rigid axles in the front and rear, air springs, dampers, tires, and steering system. An airspring and a damper are modeled including the nonlinear characteristics. <br/> We performed the damping and airspring curve optimization. The objective function for handling performance is RMS(Root Mean Squares) of the roll angle, roll rate, yaw rate, and lateral acceleration at the center of gravity of a body during a double lane change. And the objective function for ride comfort is WRMS(Weighted RMS) of the power spectral density of the vertical acceleration at the driver's seat, middle seat and rear seat. Design variables are the damping characteristic curves expressed by damping coefficient and damping exponent and air spring characteristic curves calculated by curve fitted experimental data.<br/> Since ride and handling performance have opposite characteristics, validity of optimum design system for suspension was examined by comparing changes for handling performance indices according to weighting factors.<br/>

A PC-based analysis and design system of exhaust muffler is described. It makes use of software packages such as Sysnoise and STAR-CD to calculate transmission 1oss(TL) and back pressure. The system is applied to redesign a main muffler of passenger car to improve its performance. The effects of design parameters on acoustic and pressure loss characteristics are examined, 'I'aguchi method is used to determine optimal combination of parameters which affects muffler performances such as TL. and back pressure, Three models are chosen and compared in laboratory bench test and engine dynamometer test to prove their performances.
