Signage used to indicate buildings and facilities with disability access are called ‘Convenience Facility Signage’ in Korea and internationally, they are called ‘Accessibility Signage’ or ‘Disabled Accessibility Signage.’ Unfortunately, the convenience facility signage used in Korea often do not convey its intended meaning and also come in irrelevant design such that users have difficulty understanding what they mean intuitively. This paper will analyze causes and problems involving the aforementioned issues and suggest their proper usage. Our research showed that International Symbol of Access(ISA) is used as the governing standard in foreign countries. Korea, however, is using its own independent national standard called Korean Symbol of Disability Access(KS DA), but there is no unified standard for its images and users are often confused with its proper usage. Some of its images lack its functional requirement as pictogram because it cannot be understood intuitively. Also, in line with the changed welfare for the disabled has shifted from rehabilitation to independent living, we also learned from the preference study as part of this research indicated that people preferred ISA over KS DA in terms of design and physical appearance but their preference changed with messages each signage implies: People preferred proactive and independent spirit implied by the KS DA over ISA, which suggests need for professional rehabilitation help for the disabled. When given a choice between ISA and KS DA, many chose that the latter should be used. In conclusion, it is strongly advised to establish and promote unified standard for disability accessibility signage and also prepare rigorously to protect copyright and intellectual property right in case of possible legal disputes. Doing so would prevent confusion by users due to misuse and redundant use of the signage that arise from lack of unified standard, and also guard against possible legal dispute over its usage and rights in the near future of the global age.
