우리에게 기술이란 무엇인가? 본 논문은 기술을 포스트휴머니즘의 관점에서 이해하려는 시도로, 기술이 인간과 함께 오랜 기간 공진화했으며, 지금 이 순간에도 서로를 만들면서 진화하는 ‘반려종’으로 생각해 볼 수 있음을 제안한다. 기술을 이렇게 보는 것을 필자는 ‘포스트휴먼 테크놀로지’라고 부를 것인데, 이 관점에 의하면 기술에 대한 이해는 인간에 대한 이해로 연결되며, 인간에 대한 이해는 기술에 대한 이해를 필수적으로 수반한다. 포스트휴먼 테크놀로지는 다른 포스트휴먼 사상이나 감수성에서처럼 인간을 관계적 존재로 파악하는데, 인간이 기술과 맺는 관계인 ‘기술적 매개’가 인간이 다른 인간, 동물, 자연, 영적인 존재와 맺는 관계만큼이나 중요하다고 간주한다. 이러한 관점에서 보면 기술은 새로운 관계를 만들어 내며, 동시에 기존의 관계를 무력화하거나 약화하거나 망각하게 만드는 역할을 수행하는 존재로 정의된다. 본 논문에서는 기술에 대한 포스트휴먼적인 관점을 제시한 도나 해러웨이, 질베르 시몽동, 브뤼노 라투르, 베르나르 스티글러의 철학을 살펴본 뒤에, 노인을 위한 반려로봇 ‘효돌’과 최근 사회적으로 논쟁의 대상이 되고 있는 ‘리얼돌 real doll’의 사례를 들어 인간과 기술과의 상호구성에 대해서 살펴보면서, 포스트휴먼 테크놀로지의 개념적 유용성을 고찰해 보고자 한다. What is technology to us? This paper is an attempt to understand technology from the point of view of post-humanism and suggests that technology has co-evolved with humans for a long period of time, which can be thought of as "companion species." Looking at technology in this way, I will label it ‘posthuman technology’. According to this point of view, an understanding of technology leads to an understanding of humans, and an understanding of humans necessarily entails understanding technology. Posthuman technology recognizes humans as relational beings, as in other posthuman thoughts and sensibility, and considers that ‘technical mediation’, which is the relationship between humans and technology, is as important as the relationship between humans and other humans, animals, nature, and spiritual beings. In this paper, I will examine the philosophy of Donna Haraway, Gilbert Simondon, Brno Latour, and Bernard Stigler, who presents a posthuman perspective on technology. I will then take the case of a companion robot for the elderly, “Hyodol,” and a highly controversial “real doll,” to look into the mutual construction of humans and technology, highlighting a conceptual usefulness of posthuman technology.

본 논문에서는 백남준의 비디오 아트의 사례를 분석해서 기술과 예술이 맺는 관계의 하나의 양식을 규명하려 한다. 이를 위해서 우선 백남준이 어떻게 기술을 이용해서 자신의 예술을 새롭게 재창조했는가를 보일 것이다. 그리고 거꾸로 그가 예술을 통해서 기술과 기술에 의해서 지배받는 현대 사회를 어떻게 바꾸고 새롭게 창조할 수 있다고 생각했는지를 드러낼 것이다. 이런 과정을 보임으로써, 우리는 예술과 기술의 경계가 허물어지고, 재설정되고, 새롭게 만들어지는 과정을 이해할 수 있고, 이를 통해서 예술과 기술의 다차원적인 상호작용을 규명할 수 있다. 이런 작업은 백남준의 예술세계를 더 잘 이해하게 해 줄 뿐만 아니라, 21세기의 과학기술과 예술의 융합을 위해 필요한 과학기술적 상상력과 예술적 상상력의 관계를 이해하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다. Focusing on Nam June Paik’s video art, this paper explores a mode of relationship by which art and technology interact. For this, this paper first shows how Nam June Paik recreated his art by using technologies. Then it will reveal how he, with his new video art, conceived of subverting modern technology and the technological society. With this, we will understand how the boundary between art and technology is blurred, redrawn, and then reconstructed ? a process which reveals the multi-layered and multi-dimensional interactions between art and technology. This not only leads us to a better understanding of Nam June Paik’s art world, but to a deeper understanding of the interconnection between artistic and technoscientific imagination. Such understandings are essential to the convergence of art and technoscience for the 21st century.

This paper examines the idea of technological determinism from historical and historiographical perspectives. By discussing several notable historical studies on technology, it discusses how historians of technology have criticized technological determinism and suggested alternative historiographical narratives. It also examines whether or not technological determinism has been effectively criticized and virtually discarded. It will show that it is difficult to claim that “technological determinism is dead” since several variant forms of technological determinism began to reappear in the 2000s. This paper explores why technological determinism did not disappear completely, and provide possible suggestions for this.

과학 다큐멘터리는 어떻게 구성되는가 : EBS <뇌로 보는 인간>의 “섹스” 편의 콘텐츠 변화를 중심으로

과학 다큐멘터리는 과학 대중화를 촉진하고 매개하는 중요한 매체이다. 본 논문은 2020년에 방영해서 큰 화제를 불러일으킨 EBS의 <뇌로 보는 인간> 다큐멘터리 5부작 중에서 “섹스” 편의 제작 과정을 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 다큐멘터리 제작과정에 초점을 맞추면 일반적으로 ‘사실’로 받아들여지는 과학 다큐멘터리가 실제로는 수정, 보완, 타협의 여러 단계를 거치면서 만들어진다는 것을 알 수 있으며, 다큐멘터리에서 다루는 과학이 불변의 사실이라기보다 경합하는 지식들 중에서 선별된 것임을 엿볼 수 있다. 특히 “섹스” 편은 남/녀의 섹슈앨러티의 차이를 강조하는 진화심리학에 기초한 내용이 내부 제작팀의 토론을 통해 크게 바뀌고, 결국 전통적인 진회심리학의 해석에서 보면 ‘이단적’이라고 볼 수 있을 정도로 남/녀 섹슈앨러티의 평등에 토대를 둔 스토리 라인을 채택해서 만들어 졌다. 이 과정을 분석하는 본 논문은 과학 다큐멘터리의 사회적 구성성을 드러낼 것이다. The science documentary is an important medium that promotes and mediates the public understanding of science. This paper aims to analyze the production process of the documentary "Sex" of EBS"s <Neuro Sapiens> series, which aired in 2020 and attracted much attention. If we focus on the documentary production process, we can see that scientific documentaries that are generally identified as "facts" are actually constructed through various stages of revision, supplementation, and compromise. It can be said that the knowledge it presents was selected from among competing knowledges. In particular, the major story of the “Sex” part, which originally planned to be based on evolutionary psychology that emphasizes the difference between male/female sexuality, is greatly changed through the discussions in the production team, and in the end, the team adopted a story line based on the equality of male/female sexuality, which can be seen as a ‘heresy’ from the perspective of evolutionary psychology. This paper, which explores this production process in depth, highlights the socially constructed nature of science documentaries.
