Available amount of biomass in rural area is limited in Korea. Woody biomass from thinning in forest is unavailable due to its high collection costs. Plastic waste produced from greenhouse is potential fuel for gasification in rural area since thermochemical gasification can use not only biomass but plastic wastes. Mixed fuel with biomass and flake of low density polyethylene (LDPE) supplied Korea Environment Corporation. When the amount of waste plastic is less than 30% of biomass, reaction and syngas quality was reasonable for fuel gas. Co-gasification of biomass and plastic waste resulted in higher concentration of hydrogen in syngas, compared to gasification with biomass only. Considering the limited amount of available biomass, co-gasification with plastic wastes seems promising to provide cheap gas fuel in rural society.

Salt accumulation is frequently experienced in soils under protected cultivation. Since protected cultivation does not bave rainfall and resulting infiltration, salt accumulation in the soils is inevitable. In this study, analyzed were chemical characteristics of soils under protected cultivation to investigate the factors which may contribute the salt accumulation. Soil samples were collected from 99 protected cultivation facilities around Ansung-Gun, Gyungki-Do and analyzed for electrical conductivity, PH, organic matter contents. The results showed that there was no significant trend of changes in electrical conductivity and pH along cultivation years. The only factor influencing salt acculmuation was irrigation type. Soils in facilities using drip irrigation showed higher electrical conductivity than these using diversion-hose type irrigation.

Either compressor or vacuum pumps are used in biomass gasification to provide air or take out synthesis gas. Water ring vacuum pumps can be used effectively when gas or air contains condensible steam or vapour, since they utilize sealing water or liquids to create vacuum. In many biomass gasification systems, gas cleaning processes are employed to remove tar and dusts in the syngas. Since water is used to clean up the syngas, water ring vacuum pumps can be adopted to remove tars from syngas as well as vacuum creation. In this study, a water ring vacuum pump was tested whether it can be used to clean up tar from syngas. Experimental results showed that the water ring vacuum pump reduced tar contents in the syngas when temperature of sealing water is controlled by cooling.

The effect of texture and {10-12} twin on the low cycle fatigue properties of rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy was investigated by varying the loading direction and the amount of twin volume fraction, respectively. The hysteresis loops of the specimens loaded parallel to the rolling direction (RD) showed asymmetric nature in tension and compression, and were quite different from those of the specimens loaded normal to the rolling plane (ND). ND specimens showed superior fatigue properties than RD specimens due to the compressive mean stress. It was also found that the fatigue resistance could be modified by controlling its twinning- detwinning characteristics via a pre-straining process. Initial {10-12} twin generated by pre-compression along the RD improved fatigue resistance in proportion to the amount of pre-compression. Meanwhile, the pre-tension along the ND caused an increase of mean stress, and thus deteriorated the fatigue resistance of the material.
