Fruit quality is essential for increasing marketability and consumer acceptance. To suggest an easy method for measurement of squash fruit quality, 10 varieties/cultivars and 1 populations were used as experimental materials. The fruits were harvested in marketable maturity to investigate the relation between quality factors and sensory test. The total solids content is one of the most important factors associated with sensory taste in fruits. The major squash varieties/cultivars such as 'Puthobag', 'Seoulmadi', 'Aehobag 1', 'Aehobag 2', 'Ford Zucchini', and 'Zucchini' showed total solids content of 6.4, 7.5, 7.3, 5.8, 4.7, and 4.30%, respectively. The preference values for 'Puthobag', 'Seoulmadi', 'Aehobag 1', and 'Aehobag 2', which are generally preferable varieties/cultivars, were 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, and 4.3, respectively. On the other hand, the preference values for variety 'Ford Zucchini' and cultivar 'Zucchni', which are not generally preferable, were 1.6 and 1.4, respectively. There was no significant correlation between plant length and total solids content or starch content in the fruits thereby suggesting the possibility of breeding bush type squash cultivars with good taste. This easy method of weighing dry matters of squash fruits might be useful for marketable quality index.

Squash cultivars of Cucurbita moschata have good fresh quality, but their viny growth habit hinders wide cultivation under structure. On the other hand, 'Zucchini' varieties of C. pepo have bush growth habit and better growth ability under the low temperature condition than C. moschata, but have inferior flesh quality. To combine desirable characteristics of the two species, many attempts have been exerted to obtain interspecific hybrids. A shootless phenomenon was found among segregating populations; the cotyledon expanded normally but further shoot growth. The inheritance of the character was investigated in F<sub>2</sub> and BC<sub>1</sub>F<sub>2</sub> populations. The segregation ratios indicated that the shoot-lacking characteristics is expressed by double recessive gene pairs.

To breed bush type squash with good flesh quality through interspecific hybridization, two combinations were made between C. pepo (‘Ford Zucchini’) and C. moschata (‘Seoulmadi’ and ‘Puthobag’). Hybrid breakdown was observed in selfed generations. However, fertility tended to recover in the backcrossed generation with C. moschata, from which the generation could be successfully advanced. Several plants with short vine length were selected during the three consecutive selfed generations from BC₁F₁. The estimates of broad sense heritability were higher than. 75 for vine length. Minimum number of genes for vine length was estimated to be 3. In later generations, however, since selection effect was very large in the three consecutive selfed generations from BC₁F₂, it was thought that the character of vine length in interspecific hybrids is mainly governed by 1 or 2 major gene (s). Contents of total solids in fruit were relatively low in C. pepo, high in C. moschata, and intermediate in F₁s between them. The mean content of total solids in the F₂ population was also intermediate, however that of BC₁F₄ population was a little high. Breeding of C. moschata with short vine was thought to be accomplished by the backcross breeding method after interspecific hybridization.
