아파트 외부공간에서 아동의 장소형성에 관한 연구 : A Case Study of Apartment Housing
허현태,이종현,민병호 대한건축학회 2003 대한건축학회 학술발표대회 논문집 - 계획계/구조계 Vol.23 No.1(계획계)
Children's place making was analyzed in neighborhood environments of an apartment site. Open-ended interviews of 34 children, behavior observations of children in neighborhood spaces, and behavior mapping of the places were performed to investigate what were the neighborhood places important to children's everyday life, how they emerged, and what meanings these places had to the children. Ten different places were mentioned as important setting in their neighborhood. These places coincided the locations where behavior observations showed the children were engaged in neighborhood activities most often. This indicates that place and activity correlate. These places were important because they provided settings for social contacts/interactions (including meeting friends), recurrent habitualized activities (including plays), and memories of past events. Important also were physical conditions that helped the children have these experiences. Overall, the analysis indicates that activity is the most important aspect of the place experience, along with friends and play colleagues to share the activities, memories of past events associated with the places, and physical properties of the places supporting the activity experience.

This study deals with the relationships between place and activity in neighborhood environments. It aims to clarify the role of activities on place experiences. Focused interviews were performed of neighborhood children to identify their most meaningful places that they have in their day-to-day neighborhood lives. The meaning of places were also examined during the interviews. These interview results were analyzed in parallel with the observations of children's activities separately performed. This critical comparative analysis shows that place is spatially related to activity; Places are where activities are concentrated. In addition, activities in places are more environmentally dependent, coordinated, and patterned whereas those in other neighborhood spaces tend to be of transient and mobile natures. The study overall indicates that activity is a significant mode through which places and their meanings are formed and maintained.

Children in neighborhood environments were asked to present neighborhood places that they considered most meaningful to their daily neighborhood lives. They were also asked for most important reasons for indicating these specific places and the meanings that they associated with each place presented. The meanings of places were analyzed for individual places and for four categories of places playgrounds and play fields, parks and courtyards, community facilities, and vacant areas and others. Findings indicate that the meanings are largely of four aspects behavioral (functional opportunities), physical (availability of important physical elements/qualities), sociocultural (presence of significant others, social belonging, etc.), and emotional (memorable events, important past experiences, psychological attachment, etc.). The place types and the aspects of meanings were analyzed using cross-tabulation to find out specific meanings associated with different types of places.
