        Plant factory, which considered as a novel plant production system preparing for the climate changes such as a global warming or raining, is an attractive year-round production technique of leafy plants regardless of place or season. The environmental factors of air temperature, relative humidity, nutrient, CO2 concentration, light intensity or quality inside the factory system influencing on growth have been reported. In this study, effects of light-environmental control of quality or intensity were investigated on growth of red curly lettuce ( Brassica rapa) seedlings with different four growth ages (0, 10, 20, and 30 days-old after transplanting) inside the factory system. ‘Tukksum’ red-curly lettuce which developed two true leaves was used as a plant material, and the seedlings were cultured under nutrient solution of 1.5 ds m-1 EC and 5.8 pH for 10 days after light exposure of 50, 100 or 230 μmol m-2 s-1. Light-emitting diodes of Red, blue plus red, and blue plus white were used, and fluorescent light was considered as a control. In 0 day-old seedlings after transplanting, dry weight and number of leaves under blue plus red light of 50 μmol m-2 s-1 light intensity for 10 days increased 28 and 19% comparing with the control, respectively. Increasing of fresh and dry weights in 30 days-old seedlings was significantly stimulated by blue plus red and red light. However, leaf pigmentation was inhibited by the red light regardless of the different growth ages and promoted by the mixture lights. Under 230 μmol m-2 s-1 light intensity, number of leaves, fresh and dry weights were greater by mixture-light exposure on 20 days-old seedlings. On 30 days-old seedlings, increment of dry and fresh weights was also affected by the mixture light. Leaf pigmentation was significantly inhibited by the red light regardless of the different light intensities in all the growth ages. Higher growth and pigmentation could be achieved at 20 and 30 days-old seedlings cultured under the mixture lights of blue, red, or white. It is concluded that light intensity should be controlled according to growth ages for growth and pigmentation, but rather stable control during culture period, and monochromic red is not suitable for leaf pigmentation of red curly lettuce in plant factory system.

        임신 제3삼분기 혈청 페리틴과 조산 및 저체중아와의 연관성

        Objective: Although serum ferritin is considered the best measure of total body iron, with low levels indicating iron deficiency, recent studies have shown that high levels are associated with gestational diabetes, premature birth, and low birth weight. This study aimed to analyze the association between serum ferritin levels in the third trimester of pregnancy and low birth weight and preterm birth. Methods: This study included pregnant women who delivered a single fetus at Kangwon National University Hospital between January 2009 and December 2013 and in whom serum ferritin levels were measured between 28 and 34 weeks of gestation. The association between serum ferritin levels measured in the early third trimester of pregnancy and preterm birth and low birth weight infants was analyzed. Results: A total of 1,079 women fulfilled the study criteria and had their serum ferritin level measured during the third trimester (28-33.9 weeks of gestation) and later delivered at Kangwon National University Hospital. Comparison of the group with serum ferritin levels above the 75th percentile and those below the 25th percentile at the beginning of the third trimester revealed that the incidence of preterm births (<34 weeks of gestation, <37 weeks of gestation) and low birth weight were significantly higher in the group with serum ferritin levels above the 75th percentile than those below the 25th percentile (p<0.05). When variable factors were controlled through multiple regression analysis, the group whose serum ferritin levels were above the 75th percentile at 30-31.9 weeks of gestation had the highest risk of preterm birth before 34 weeks of gestation (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 7.85; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.32-29.9) and low birth weight (adjusted OR, 6.49; 95% CI, 2.10-20.0). Conclusion: In this study, when serum ferritin was high in the third trimester of pregnancy, it was significantly increased with preterm birth (<34 and 37 weeks) and low birth weight. In particular, when serum ferritin levels were high at 30-31.9 weeks of gestation, the risk of premature birth before 34 weeks and low birth weight was statistically highest.

        Dieulafoy 병

        In cases of Gastointestinal Vascular Malfomnation, which involve the mucosa and submucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, Dieulafoys erosion consists of abnormally large gastric submucosal artery, and ruptures into the stomach. They cause massive or recurrent intragastric bleeding. The lesion is very small and easily overlooked even at laparotomy and can only be correctly diagnosed by endoscopy or arteriography when the patient is actively bleeding. The authers recently observed a case of Dieulafoys disease, this 41-year old man presented an episode of severe melena, but endoscopy and barium enema were all unremarkable. There was history of analgesic abuse because of spondylolisthesis of L4-5. The physical examination was unremarkable except for grossly melenic stools. The hemoglobin was 4.8g/dl. Repeated endoscopy by a more experienced endoscopist demonstrated a vascular malformation at the posterior wall of upper body of stomach with coated blood clot. An angiography including superior mesenteric artery studies, reveal vascular malformation of the left gastroepiploic artery. A total of 30 units of blood had been replaced prior to gastrectomy. Postoperatively, he had no further bleeding. Pathologic examination of the stomach showed dilated prominent blood vessels in the submucosa with focally ectatic capillaries in the lamina propria. Two weeks after operation, the hemoglobin showed 14.0g/dl, and he discharged after improvement.
