Vol.2022 No.6
Vol.2010 No.7

In this paper, an adaptive illumination change compensation method is proposed for multi-view video coding. In multi-view video, an illumination change can occur due to physically imperfect camera calibration, each different camera position and direction, and so on. These characteristics can cause a performance decrease in the multi-view video coding that uses an inter-view prediction by referring to the pictures obtained from the neighboring views. By using the proposed method, a compression ratio of the proposed method in the multi-view video coding is increased, and finally 0.1~0.6㏈ PSNR(Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) improvement was obtained compared with the case of not using the proposed method.

For objective assessment of stereoscopic 3D image quality, we measure quality of left and right image with 2D image quality measurement method. However, this method is inconvenient because that we have to measure quality of left and right image individually. Therefore we propose a method of stereoscopic 3D image quality assessment using one overlaid image with left and right image. Using this method, One can measure quality of stereoscopic 3D image more easily and quickly.

In this paper, we propose an application of OpenGL functions for novel view synthesis from multi-view images and depth maps. While image based rendering has been meant to generate synthetic images by processing the camera view with a graphic engine, little has been known about how to apply the given images and depth information to the graphic engine and render the scene. This paper presents an efficient way of constructing a 3D space with camera parameters, reconstructing the 3D scene with color and depth images, and synthesizing virtual views in real-time as well as their depth images.

Image resizing (or scaling) is one of the most essential issues for the success of visual service because image data has to be adapted to the variety of display features. For 2D imaging, the image scaling is generally accomplished by 2D image re-sampling (i.e., up-/down-sampling). However, when it comes to stereoscopic 3D images, 2D re-sampling methods are inadequate because additional consideration on the third dimension of depth is not incorporated. Practically, stereoscopic 3D image scaling is process with left/right images, not stereoscopic 3D image itself, because the left/right images are only tangible data. In this paper, we analyze stereoscopic 3D image scaling from two aspects: geometrical deformation and frequency-domain aliasing. A number of 3D displays are available in the market and they have various screen dimensions. As we have more varieties of the displays, efficient stereoscopic 3D image scaling is becoming more emphasized. We present the recommendations for the 3D scaling from the geometric analysis and propose a disparity-adaptive filter for anti-aliasing which could occur during the image scaling process.

In this paper, we propose a method of frame synchronization for stereoscopic 3D video to solve the viewing problem caused by synchronization errors between a left video and a right video using the temporal frame difference image depending on the movement of objects. Firstly, we compute two temporal frame difference images from the left video and the right video which are corrected the vertical parallax between two videos using rectification, and calculate two horizontal projection profiles of two temporal frame difference images. Then, we find a pair of synchronized frames of the two videos by measuring the mean of absolute difference (MAD) of two horizontal projection profiles. Experimental results show that the proposed method can be used for stereoscopic 3D video, and is robust against Gaussian noise and video compression by H.264/AVC.

Multi-view video coding (MVC) based on H.264/AVC encodes multiple views efficiently by using a prediction scheme that exploits inter-view correlation among multiple views. However, with the increase of the number of views and use of inter-view prediction among views, total encoding time will be increased in multiview video coding. In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision using both MB(Macroblock)-based region segmentation information corresponding to each view in multiple views and global disparity vector among views in order to reduce encoding time. The proposed method achieves on average 40% reduction of total encoding time with the objective video quality degradation of about 0.04 ㏈ peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) by using joint multi-view video model (JMVM) 4.0 that is the reference software of the multiview video coding standard.
