Evaporative cooling fans are being increasingly used in the industrial and livestock industries for air cooling. This process utilizes the vaporization cooling phenomenon when water evaporates. Most cooling filters for evaporative cooling fans consist of paper filters. However, the paper filter has a fatal disadvantage in that it has low durability and poor reusability because of contamination arising from the growth of fungi and moss and the fact that it is difficult to wash. In this study, a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) mono-filament-based 3D spacer fabric was fabricated and examined for use as a cooling pad to replace paper filters. In addition, the 3D spacer fabrics were fabricated by making mono-filaments with various types of cross-sections, as well as different types of circular shapes. The water absorption, drying rate, moisture evaporation, and cooling efficiency of the 3D spacer fabric were controlled by adjusting the cross-sectional shape of the filaments. In addition, the effect of air volume on the cooling efficiency was determined.

In order to develop probiotics which may be a viable alternative of antibiotic use in pig industry, five bacterial strains (Lactobacillus sp. HN 52, 92, 98, 235 and AP 116) possessing antimicrobial properties were selected from 500 strains isolates of pig intestines. The bacteriocin produced by Lactobacillus sp. HN 235 displayed a relative broad spectrum of inhibitory activity against all Enterococcus strains, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes and Clostridium perfringens using the spot-on-lawn method. The production of antimicrobial substance started in the middle of the exponential growth phase, reached maximum levels (6,400 AU/mL) in the stationary phase, and then declined. Bacteriocin activity remained unchanged after 30 min of heat treatment at 95℃ and stable from pH 2.0 to 10 for 1 h, or exposure to organic solvents; however, it diminished after treatment with proteolytic enzymes. The molecular weight of the bacteriocin was about 5 kDa according to a tricine SDS-PAGE analysis.

In order to develop probiotic strain for pigs, Lactobacillus spp. (527 isolates), Streptococcus spp. (95 isolates) and Bifidobacterium spp. (25 isolates) were isolated from the feces of 35 pigs. These isolates were tested through in vitro experiment such as acid tolerance at pH 2.0 (Lactobacillus spp. and Streptococcus spp.) or pH 3.0 (Bifidobacterium spp.), bile tolerance in MRS broth containing 0.3% (w/v) Oxgall, heat resistance at 70°C and 80°C for 5 min, antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria and Caco-2 cell adherence assay. Finally ten most superior strain (5 Lactobacillus spp. strain, 3 Bifidobacterium spp. strain and 2 Streptococcus spp. strain) were selected as potential candidate for probiotic use in pig industry. It could be used as an alternative to antibiotics in feed additives.
