Facial nerve schwannomas in the internal auditory canal and cerebello-pontine angle are rare benign tumors which are difficult to diagnose due to their various clinical symptoms and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) findings show similar findings compare to th vestibular nerve schwannomas. Therefore, the enhancement pattern of facial nerve in MRI is the clue to predict the origin of the tumor. We experienced a case of senosorineral hearing impairment with history of intermittent dizziness and Bell s palsy in the right side before 15 years ago. Temporal bone MRI finding showed facial nerve enhancement in the tympanic segment, geniculate ganglion, and GSPN in T1-weighted enhancement images. At first, we thought of it as a facial nerve schwannoma due to the facial nerve enhancement pattern but it was proven to be a vestibular nerve schwannoma in the operation field.

Dermoid cysts are developmental anomalies that represent the simplest form of teratoma. They are the result of the sequestration of the skin along the lines of embryonic closure. These cysts of the head and neck are uncommon and account for 7% of all dermoid cysts. They are predominantly found in the orbit, floor of mouth, and nose. As a dermoid cyst of the parotid gland is extremely rare, it is often misdiagnosed preoperatively. By way of imaging modalities such as computed tomography, MRI and ultrasongraphy along with FNAB, it can be differentiated from many other cystic lesions of the parotid gland. We report a case of dermoid cyst of the parotid gland which masqueraded as lipoma before complete surgical excision.
난청 동물모델에서 신경성장인자에 의한 청력회복과 나선 신경절재생에 관한 연구

Cochlear prostheses for the sensorineural hearing impairment are dependent on survival and excitability of the auditory nerve. Multiple neurotrophic factors have been shown to have important roles in the survival of auditory neurons and protecting spiral ganglion cells. This study evaluated the efficacy of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) combined with glial-cell derived neurotrophic factor(GDNF) and neurotrophin-3(NT-3), insulin growth factor(IGF), and epidermal growth factor(EGF) with fibroblast growth factor(FGF) application in 2 weeks post-deafening guinea pigs. Healthy 30 guinea pigs were deafened by infusion of kanamycin and ethacrynic acid. Myringotomy was done in both ears, gelfoams immersed with neurotrophic factors were placed on the round window membrane while gelfoams immersed with saline were applied to control ear. On 1 week after drug application, hearing test was done and the cochleae were collected in every 2 weeks. And the number of spiral ganglion cells was quantitatively analyzed. Significant hearing restoration was observed in group 1(BDNF, GDNF, NT-3 treated group) & group 2(IGF treated group). The number of spiral ganglion cells of group 1 on 5 week after the treatment, and group 3(EGF, FGF treated group) on 3 week after the treatment were significantly increased them compared with control group. However, no statistically significant regeneration was observed in group 2. These findings demonstrate that BDNF+GDNF+NT-3 neurotrophic factor application through round window membrane have the potential for regeneration of spiral ganglion cells & hearing restoration.
