This essay examines the relationship between art and architecture through the photographic art of the Okada House (1933) designed by pioneering modern architect Horiguchi Sutemi (1895–1983). While the house was torn down in the spring of 1995 and remains only in photographs, a celebrated image of this hybrid Japanese-Western house, taken by Watanabe Yoshio (1907–2000) around 1935, captures the emergence of Japanese modernist architecture in parallel with the specialized genre of architectural photography. The composition of the photograph, which integrates a tatami room with a garden intersected by a white rectilinear reflecting pool, at once evokes de Stijl principles and reinterprets Japanese architectural traditions as a new form of contemporary space. This essay explores the many potential readings of this image in both Eastern and Western contexts as well as its own history between art and architecture through time.
