In order to know the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in bulkand domestic animals, attempts were made to isolate the organisms from 593 samples. Also examined were the biochemical properties and the coagulase types of the isolates. Overall, S. aureus were present in 43.4% of poultry meat samples, 24.6% of bulk milk and 15.5% of pork, The incidence of S. aureus isolated from the body skin and the nasal cavity of cattle and pigs were 11.3%, 14.9% 21.9% and 44.4%, respectively. The majority of biochemical and cultural properties of the S. aureus isolates were identical to those of the standard strains. Particlarly, β-homolysis was common in the organisms isolated from bulk milk and pigs, while α-hemolysis was common from Korean native cattle and poultry meat. Most isolates(86.0%) produced one or more coagulase types. Only the mixed type ⅡㆍⅢ was detected in the organisms isolated from poultry meat and type Ⅱ and Ⅶ were most common in other samples.

This study was conducted to investigate the correlation between coagulase, hemolysin and enterotoxin types of the S. aureus isolated from the domestic animals, and also examined were enterotoxin production of staphylococcal enterotoxin C and D strains isolated. No correlation was recognized between coagulase and enterotoxin types of the isolates but enterotoxin were produced by 68.1% of 276 coagulase positive S. aureus strains. In hemolytic reaction, all strains of S. aureus isolates from cattle and chickens were α-hemolytic while 67.8%, 17.9% and 14.3% of the isolates of swine origin were respectively α β-, α- and β-hemolytic. Hemolytic types were variable in the strains of men and bulk milk origin, and o-hemolytic strains were predominant in these samples. Though there was no correlation between hemolysin and enterotoxin types of the isloates, 74.3% of the organism produced one or more enterotoxin types. Generation time of type C strains were 23.38 and 24.24 minutes and were more rapid than those (24.24 and 25.90 minutes) of type D strains. The amount of enterotoxin produced by SEC strains was ≥8-≥10ng/m1 at 8 hours and in creased up to the miximum, ≥1,000ng/ml at 16 hours after incubation. Meanwhile, SED strains produced ≥4-≥8ng/ml of enterotoxin at 8 hours and the amount increased as little as ≥100ng/ml at 16 hours when compared to SEC strains. Maximum amount of the enterotoxin by SED strains was ≥200ng/ml at 24 hours after incubation.

The present study was conducted to investigate the enterotoxin types of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bulk milk, Korean native cattle, pigs and poultry meat. Enterotoxins were produced by 88.0% of the organisms isolated from bulk milk, 76.2% from cattle, 64.7% from pigs and 22.5% from poultry meat. Enterotoxin type C and D were most common, being 42.0% and 12.8%, respectively. Enterotoxins were produced by all the strains of coagulase types Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ and Ⅴ, 94.4% of type Ⅵ and 77.4% of type Ⅶ, while only 36.8% of the mixed type ⅡㆍⅢ produced enterotoxins. Commonly, coagulase types Ⅳ, Ⅴ, Ⅵ and Ⅶ strins produced enterotoxin C, and coagulase typis Ⅱ and ㆍⅢ strains produced enterotoxin D.

In order to know the incidence of coagulase-positive in bulk milk from dairy farms, attempts were made to isolate the organism from 207 samples. Also examined was biochemical characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates. Isolation rates of coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus in bulk milk samples were 24.6%, The population of Staphylococcus aureus varied from 10¹ to 10⁴/ml. All the isolated of the staphylococcus aureus showed production of coagulase, TNase and DNase, and fermentation of mannitol. However, of 133 isolates, 121(91.0%) showed hemolysis on sheep blood agar and 97.7% produced lecithinase in egg yolk medium. All of 133 isolates were sensitive to cephalothin, chloramphenicol and vancomycin but 33.1~46.6% of the strains were resistant to kanamycin, tetracycline and gentamicin.
