Records on body weights and measurements of Korean native cows maintained as purebred breeding herds in Jang Soo area from 1981 to 1986 were analysed. Data from 374 registered cows were used to study the traits at birth, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months of age. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Overall least squares means and standard errors for the body weights at birth, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months of age were 23.4±0.08㎏, 85.8±0.49㎏, 139.3±0.67㎏, 210.2±1.07㎏, 268.5±1.00㎏ and 321.4±1.85㎏, respectively. 2. Effect of period of birth showed significant differences in most of the traits from birth to 12 months of age. 3. In general, cows in 2nd generation were superior in most of the traits studied to those in 1st, which represents the effects of sire, selection and cow registration. 4. Cows born in fall or winter were heavier at 6 and 12 months of age than those born in other seasons. 5. Calves born to the cows at 5th parity & over were superior in several body measurements.

The records of 4,727 head of Hanwoo(Korean Native Cattle) cows were used to estimate the effects of the location, generation, pregnancy phase, year of birth and season of birth on body measurements at 24 months of age. Least squares means and standard errors of withers height, rump height, body length, chest girth, chest depth, chest width, rump length, rump width, thud width and hipbone width at 24 months of age were 118.93±0.84㎝, 121.00±0.73㎝, 134.88±0.80㎝, 166.12±1.42㎝, 61.9±90.58㎝, 36.48±0.83㎝, 45.46±0.50㎝, 40.08±0.47㎝, 37.21±0.55㎝ and 22.08±0.48㎝, respectively. The effects of the locations were highly significant on all of the body measurements and those of the generations were significant on rump length and rump width. The effect of the phase of pregnancy was significant on withers height, chest girth, chest depth, chest width, rump width and thurl width and that of the birth year was significant on all of the body measurements except withers height. The effect of the birth season was significant on withers height, rump height, body length, chest girth, rump length and hipbone width.

To investigate the effects of genotypes of dam and type of mating of parents on the litter sizes at birth and weaning, the dta collected from 3lines of mice and their crosses were analyzed. Maternal heterosic effects on the litter size were high in the crosses involving highly inbred C₃H line. The percent heterosis on the litter size was generally higher at weaning than at the time of birth which implies crossbred clams raise their pups better than straightbred dams. Back crosses exerted higher heterosis when the dams were younger (at early parity), while the 3-way crosses showed higher at older ages especially for the litter size at weaning.

To investigate the genetic and environmental effects on the economically important traits in swine, data on 4.782 pigs tested from 1990 through 1993 at a test station were analysed. The statistical model applied for the analysis was consisted of sex, breed, purity, year and season of birth as main effects with the interaction of the year×season. Males bowed greater duly gain by about 50g, thiner backfat, and reached 90㎏ body weight earlier than females. By computing with the game index, the males showed greater values than females. Duroc showed faster growth, and thicker backfot, while Yorkshire was superior in feed conversion to the other two breeds. The backfat thickness was smaller in the pigs of 2nd parity, but the clays to reach 90㎏ body weight tends to be shorter in the pigs of 3rd parity. The pig bom in toll or winter grew faster than those born in spring or summer season. The year effect on most of the traits showed gradual progress representing the results of the selection and/or replacement effects by the parent stock imported from many foreign countries over a long, period.

This study was carried out to investigate environmental effects on certain economically important genetic traits in swine. Data from the 12,402 performance records obtained at the Korean Second Swine Test Station from the year 1990 through 1997 were used for the study. The statistical analyses were made on effects of breed, sex, farm region, parity, litter size, year and season of birth. The average daily gain of Duroc was superior to those of Landrace and Yorkshire. The backfat thickness of Duroc was thicker than those of the other two breeds (P$lt;0.01). The selection indices in Landrace and Yorkshire were bigger than those of Duroc in both ways of index calculation. The effects of birth year on backfat thickness, feed efficiency and the days to 90㎏ exerted gradual progress(P$lt;0.01). Most of the growth traits of pigs born in fall or winter were superior to those of pigs born in spring or summer(P$lt;0.01). The effects of litter size showed significant differences in all of the traits studied.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of parity, season and year of farrowing on the preweaning traits of swine based on the data obtained from 1,370 litters of Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire breeds. The sows were raised at the Swine Breeding Station of National Livestock Cooperatives Federation in Yeong Kwang from 1983 through 1986. Least squares means were computed within breed and the results are summarized as follows: 1. Overall least squares means for litter size alive were superior in Landrace (9.35 head) to those in other breeds. 2. For the litter sizes at 21 and 42 weaning days of age, Landrace showed best and was followed by Yorkshire, Duroc and Hampshire in order. 3. Percentages of weaned pigs were 93.5 in Landrace 90.0 in Yorkshire which showed about 1(1% higher than those in the other two breeds. 4. Sows furrowed at 3rd or 4th parity showed better performances for most of the traits studied. 5. Pigs born in spring or fall were superior to those born in summer or winter. The year 1984 in general seemed to be better than any other years included in this analysis.
