폰트는 오늘날 디지털 시대에 이르러서 그 형태와 용도에 있어 더욱 급격한 변화의 양상을 보이고 있다. 폰트 제작기술의 발전으로 예전보다 훨씬 손쉽게 새로운 폰트를 개발할 수 있게 됨에 따라 기업이나 도시 또는 특정 단체를 위한 전용폰트가 개발 붐에 있다. 특히 영문서체 보다 시간과 노력이 많이 드는 한글 서체의 경우 전용서체 제작에 어려움이 많아 그간 개발에 한계가 많았으나 기술의 발전으로 오늘날 많은 조직체가 자신들만의 전용 폰트의 제작을 시도하고 있다. 본격적인 디지털 시대를 맞아 바람직한 전용폰트의 요건은 첫째 전통적인 전용 폰트의 역할 측면에서 보았을 때 전용폰트가 대표하는 기업이나 단체의 정체성을 잘 대변해 줄 수 있는 이미지를 가져야 하고 둘째는 그 폰트가 대표할 단체의 용도에 맞게끔 폰트패밀리(fontfamily)를 구성하고 제대로 적용하고 관리하여 오용을 방지해야 하며 셋째는 커뮤니케이션의 용도와 도구에 알맞은 디자인을 개발하되 특히 아직까지 많이 신경 쓰지 않았던 디지털 도구들의 표현상의 특징이나 제약을 잘 파악해야 한다는 것이다. 이미 디지털기기가 차지하고 있는 주된 커뮤니케이션 도구로서의 지위를 간과하지 말아야 하며 디지털 매체용 전용폰트와 기존 사인이나 인쇄 매체용 전용폰트와의 조화에도 주의를 기울여야 할 것이다. 전용폰트의 아이덴티피케이션(identification) 기능이 기업이나 브랜드를 통해 더욱 부각되고 있는 시점에서 본 연구를 통하여 그간 전용폰트의 발전양상을 살펴보고 이 시대에 부응하는 디지털 전용폰트의 요건을 가늠해 보고자 한다. In today's digital era there have been rapid changes in the form and use of the styles of type. The advance in the production technology of this field makes it much easier to develop new styles of type and the development of typefaces for particular businesses urban communities or organizations is booming now. As for requirements in the desirable dedicated font with facing the substantially digital era firstly given seeing from the aspect in a role of the traditional dedicated font the dedicated font needs to have image that can well speak for identity in the representative enterprise or group. Secondly misuse needs to be prevented by forming font-family in line with a use of the group rightly applying and managing. Thirdly the design suitable for a use and tool in communication needs to be developed. Still it is said that there is necessity of well grasping characteristics or restrictions in light of expressing especially digital tools which have not been noted much so far. The position as a main communication tool which is already possessed by digital device shouldn't be neglected. And the attention will need to be paid even to harmony between the dedicated font for the digital media and the dedicated font for the existing sign or the printing media. As corporations and brands pay growing attention to their dedicated font the identification function of the styles of type is increasingly highlighted. The purpose of this study was to delve into the aspects of the development of dedicated font and the conditions of digital fonts required by the present days.
