This study was conducted to estimate the correlation structure between body size traits, carcass traits, and primal cuts in Hanwoo steers. Hanwoo progeny test data(body weight and body measurements) were collected from 2008 to 2010 from a total of 882 steers at the Hanwoo Improvement Main Center(NACF). Carcass traits considered were cold carcass weight, eye muscle area, backfat thickness, and marbling scores evaluated at the time of carcass grading. Correlation analyses were performed with observed scales of the traits and with residuals considering fixed environmental effects in generalized linear models. The correlation coefficient estimated between loin weight and chest girth was high at 0.74. The shank negatively correlated with pelvic width(-0.23) and hipbone width(-0.27). In addition, rib weight and chest girth was highly correlated(0.80). The correlation between carcass weight and chest girth was 0.86 in observed scale. Residual correlation between these traits was estimated at 0.65. Correlation between carcass weight and loin was 0.87 in the observed scale. Residual correlation was estimated at 0.83. The correlation coefficient estimated between shank weight and brisket and flank weight was negative at -0.69. Chest girth had a high correlation between primal cuts weight and body measurements. Thus, we believe that these results will provide a greater understanding on the relationship of primal cuts and other phenotypes, thus enabling valid production models for Hanwoo steers.
유전 및 육종 : 한우 검정우의 일당증체량에 관한 연구

본 연구는 당대검정 한우 4,681두와 후대검정 한우 4,442두의 자료를 이용하여 한우 일당증체량을 통한 성장 특성과 유전력을 추정하고, 도체형질과의 유전상관을 알아보고자 수행하였다. Park et al. ; Average Daily Gain of Hanwoo -3 2 1- 당대검정우에서 구한 6~9개월령, 9~12개월령, 6~12개월령 일당 증체량의 평균과 표준편차는 각각 1.04 ± 0.16 kg, 1.11 ± 0.17 kg, 1.07 ± 0.11 kg이었으며, 6~9개월령과 9~12개월령, 6~9개월령과 6~12개월령, 9~12개월령과 6~12개월령 일당증체량의 표현형 상관 이 각각 -0.03, 0.66, 0.65였다. 후대검정우에서 구한 6~12개월령 일당증체량과 도체중, 등심단 면적, 등지방두께 및 근내지방도의 표현형 상관은 각각 0.446, 0.199, 0.0266 및 0.045였다. 6~12개월령 일당증체량, 도체중, 등심단면적, 등지방두께 및 근 내지방도의 유전력은 각각 0.251, 0.298, 0.424, 0.503 및 0.626 이었으며, 6~12개월령 일당증체량과 도체중, 등심단면적, 등지방두 께 및 근내지방도의 유전상관은 각각 0.606, 0.292, -0.095 및 -0.007이었다. 본 연구로부터 일당증체량에 대한 개량으로 도체 중, 등심단면적 및 등지방두께에 대한 개량이 가능할 것으로 사료 된다. This study was conducted to identify the characteristics and estimate the genetic parameters of average daily gain (ADG) and carcass traits of Hanwoo. The data used in this study were 4,681 heads which were performance-tested and 4,442 heads which were progeny-tested in test station of National Agricultural Cooperative Federation. The means and standard deviations of ADG between 6~9 months (ADG:6-9), ADG between 9~12 (ADG:9-12) and ADG between 6~12 (ADG:6-12) from the performance test were 1.04 ± 0.16, 1.11 ± 0.17 and 1.07 ± 0.11, respectively. The phenotypic correlations of ADG:6-9 and ADG:9-12, ADG:6-9 and ADG:6-12, ADG:9-12 and ADG:6-12 were -0.03, 0.66 and 0.65, respectively. The phenotypic correlations of ADG:6-12 with carcass weight (CW), eye muscle area (EMA), backfat thickness (BF), and marbling score (MS) from progeny test were 0.446, 0.199, 0.0266 and 0.045, respectively. Estimated heritabilities from the pooled data were 0.251 (ADG:6-12), 0.298 (CW), 0.424 (EMA), 0.503 (BF) and 0.626 (MS), respectively. Estimated genetic correlations of ADG:6-12 with CW, EMA, BF, MS were 0.606, 0.292, -0.095 and -0.007, respectively. From these results, it could be suggested that selection for ADG significantly affects CW, EMA and BF by correlated response to selection.

This paper sketches the strategies and designs for monitoring system of swine genetic improvement. The system should reflect every side of pig production. The system leads us to assess the efficiency of pig production and the scope of the system includes not only nucleus, multiplying and commercial herds, but also packing and processing sectors. For more accurate statistics, data for this monitoring system must be collected from all above mentioned areas, but not by random sampling. Futhermore, data analysis results including seedstocks and distribution information of genetic trend should be included in the system. The schema of knowledge database system could be employed in the system. The monitoring system in the final destination would unify the systems derived from various sources and provide any solution in swine industry including pig breeding.
