The cadmium(Cd) toxicity and the effect of zinc pretreatment to the mice liver were investigated. The respiration rate and NADH-CoQ reductase activities of liver mitochondrial fraction were measured and ultrastructural changes were observed by electron microscopy. In Cd-treated group, it was observed that mitochondrial swelling, dilation of rough endoplasmic reticulum, accumulation of glycogen granules and loss of cytosolic background substances. Biochemically, Cd induced decrease of state Ⅳ respiration rate and decrease of NADH-CoQ reductase activity in the mitochondrial fraction, but cytochrome c oxidase activity was increased in Cd-treated group. However, in Zn-pretreated liver, cytosolic background substances and mitochondrial structures restored to control level. Also state Ⅳ respiration rate and NADH-CoQ reductase activities were recovered. In contrast, Zn-pretreatment had no effect on the cytochrome c oxidase.
