Drivers’ sitting strategies are considered in car seat design. Existing research has identified representative sitting strategies by visual inspection of seating pressure measurements collected from a small sample size of drivers. The present study recruited 20 female and 20 male participants, measured seating pressure, and classified sitting strategies by cluster analysis. The participants’ sitting postures were classified based on seating pressure distribution into mid-back and scapular, mid-back and lumbar, and lumbar sitting strategies for the upper body and hip concentrated, hip and mid-thigh concentrated, and hip and mid-thigh distributed sitting strategies for the lower body. The effects of gender and occupant package layout (OPL) on sitting strategy were nout found significant. The identified sitting strategies would be of use for the design and evaluation of an OPL and a seat.

3 차원 귀 형상을 반영한 이어폰 설계는 착용감을 향상시킬 수 있다. 본 연구는 한국인 및 북미인 296 명의 3 차원 귀 형상을 측정하고 이들 특성을 분석하여 이어폰의 주요 부품 설계에 반영하였다. 개발된 이어폰 설계는 가상 착의 분석을 통해 90% 이상의 사용자들을 수용할 수 있을 것으로 추정된다. 본 연구의 3 차원 귀 형상 기반 설계 방법은 다양한 귀착용 제품 설계에 유용하게 활용될 수 있다.

자동차 운전석 설계에 있어 운전자가 느끼는 불편도가 중요하게 고려되고 있으며 이에 따라 운전자의 체압과 착좌자세 유형에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구는 3가지 차량유형(coupe, sedan, SUV)으로 조정 가능한 seating buck을 이용해 운전자의 선호착좌자세를 측정하고, pressure mat를 이용해 운전석과 운전자간에 생기는 체압(body pressure)을 분석한 후 전체 신체부위당 단위면적에 생기는 압력(body pressure ratio)을 착좌자세 유형분류의 정량적 근거로 사용하였다. 그리고 body pressure ratio에 근거한 정량적 기준에 따라 신체를 상체와 하체로 나누어 각각 2가지(상체: mid-back, upper & mid-back, 하체: hip, hip & mid-thigh)의 착좌자세 유형으로 분류하여 총 4가지(mid-back, hip; mid-back, hip & mid-thigh; upper & mid-back, hip; upper & mid-back, hip & mid-thigh)의 착좌자세 유형으로 분류하였다.

Objective: This study aims to identify the effects of hand size, hand dominance, and device size on the grip posture of smartphones for physical and graphical UIs. Background: An inappropriate user interface (UI) causes an inappropriate grip posture and is a cause of lowering smartphone usability. Although studies on smartphone UI elements affecting the gripping posture have been conducted in various fields, there has been no study on the effect of hand dominance for physical and graphical UIs together. Method: Forty participants with different hand sizes simulated texting and web-surfing tasks using smartphone mock-ups with screen sizes of 3.0" to 7.0" and their grip postures were recorded using web cameras. Four major grip postures (side grip, back-support grip, bottom-support grip, and upper grip), classified based on the positions of the fingers on the smartphone and the shape of the grip, were identified. Results: It was found that the grip posture distributions for physical UI and graphical UI varied largely by device size (up to 37.1%), moderately by hand size (up to 14.3%), and slightly (up to 3.0%) by hand dominance. Conclusion: This study found that the frequency distribution of use of the grip posture was significantly changed according to the user interface, anthropometric information such as hand length and dominant hand, and smartphone design factors such as device size. Application: The information of the grip posture distributions identified in the present study can be utilized to determine the optimal locations of smartphone interfaces for better usability.

A visual field tester using a fixation target with a lack of distinctiveness decreases accuracy and usability in visual field testing. The present study is intended to develop various induction methods of gaze fixation for effective visual field testing. Proposed were four new gaze fixation induction methods (color changing dot; alphanumeric characters; flashing black dot; and bulls eye and cross hair, BECH) by considering visual attention factors such as color, meaning, flashing, and shape and the proposed methods were compared with the existing black dot (BD) method in terms of gaze fixation performance and subjective satisfaction by 32 participants in their 20s to 30s. BECH was found most preferred by increasing gaze fixation performance by 4.8% and subjective satisfaction by 0.4 to 2.0 in a 7-point scale compared to BD. BECH can be applied to tests such as visual field testing and macular pigment optical density testing in which gaze fixation is crucial for accuracy and usability.
