        The New Paradigm of Management in Design Organization: The Reality of Bottom-line Effectiveness in Design Organization’s Management Needs

        This study identifies how management theory and philosophy work in conjunction with and support one another as both are critical to understanding leadership concepts and viewing the design organization holistically in terms of organizational behavior and performance. This paper analyses data from an in-depth single-case study at management in interior design organization in Korea. Two new ‘most efficient and effective way’ to achieve the goals of the design organization has been launched. The first was organizational behavior and performance, and the second a needed new paradigm of management skills. Organizational culture affects organizational effectiveness in design because it can (a) provide an organization with a competitive advantage, (b) improve the way an organizational structure works, and (c) increase the motivation of designers to pursue organizational interests. Moreover, the result of research creates paradigm of thinking that how leaders in the design organization need to focus on innovative and strategic systems to gain competitive advantage and enter global markets; a key inter-organizational cooperation strategy to achieve a targeted goal.

        필로티 건물 이격거리에 따른 화재확산 위험성 연구

        With the common tendency in the accordance with the trend, low-stories built edifices that are Pilotis-oriented structuredexponentially and constantly increasing its number of buildings. It inevitably contains its risks of facing conflagrations asmost of its part is used as parking lots. In the parking lots, the length of the flame has a heavy-weighted possibility thatit would get increased because the heat release rate gets relatively high due to the vehicle insulation. Following on top ofthat, due to the nature of the Pilotisconsisting of pillars, there is a risk of flame spread to the adjacent building if the samePilotis-structured buildings are adjacent to each other, if the flame spreads to the surroundings due to the influence of thewind. Because the most of the pilotis-structured-buildings have this entrance that makes the residents be able to enter, ifthe entrance were plugged the resident get a serious risk of a poisonous gas and a flame. Therefore, if the parking-lotsof the pilotis-structured-buildings are adjacent to each other it requires a space to prevent the place from the spread offlame. This research studied how far is appropriate to prevent flame spreading with FDS. As a result, the study found thatthe distance at least 3.0 m is required. 필로티구조를 가진 저층 위주의 도시형생활주택이 날로 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 대부분의 필로티 공간은 주차장으로 활용되고 있어, 이에 따른 화재의 위험이 따른다. 특히 주차장과 같은 공간은 차량으로 인해 화재하중이 높기때문에 화염의 분출길이가 길어진다. 또한 기둥으로만 구성된 필로티의 특성상 바람의 영향으로 화세가 거세져 화염이 주변으로 확산될 경우 같은 필로티 형태의 건물이 서로 인접해 있을 경우 때 건물로의 화염 확산 위험이 있다. 필로티 구조의 주택 대부분은 이곳을 통해 출 ․ 입이 가능한 구조이기 때문에 필로티가 막히면 입주자는 건물에 갇혀유독가스 및 화염으로 부터 안전을 위협받게 된다. 필로티 구조 건물의 주차장이 서로 인접할 때 화염 확산 방지를위해 일정한 간격이 필요하다. 본 연구는 필로티 주차장에서 화재가 발생하였을 경우 어느 정도 거리를 유지해야옆 건물로의 화재 확산을 막을 수 있는지에 대하여 화재시뮬레이션을 이용하여 연구하였다. 그 결과 건물은 최소3.0m 이상을 이격하여야 하는 것으로 확인되었다.

      • 형상기억합금 (SMA)을 이용한 지능구조물 시스템

        본 글에서와 같이 SMA 작동기는 전류 압력만으로 유연 구조물 시스템의 형상 이나 전동을 제어할 수 있으므로 작동기의 구조를 매우 간단히 할 수 있으머, 또한 작동기의 무게에 비하여 큰힘이나 변위를 제어할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 이를 이용 하여 각종 제조분야 및 첨단 항공우주 산업에 이르기까지 매우 다양한 분야에 응용이 가능하다. 그러나, 현재 우리나라의 경우 SMA에 대한 연구는 미미한 상태이다. 새로운 SMA 재료와 이를 응용한 매카니즘에 대한 연구와 개발이 절실하며 이를 위한 과감한 투자가 요구된다. 또한 정확하고 견실한 제어를 위하여 SMA 작동기의 다양한 특성을 보다 심도있게 파악하고, 강건한 제어기를 적용하여 외부 환경의 영향을 최소화하는 연구가 필요하다. 나아가서 제어 메카니즘의 구동 장치 등의 적용을 위한 이방향성 SMA의 특성과 제어기법에 대한 연구도 병행해서 수행되어야 할 것으로 생각된다.

        Effective shared process and application of knowledge management (KM) in interior design service industry

        This paper addresses the importance of knowledge management (KM) and the relationship of that theory when applied to improving interior design organizational performance in four areas: people, processes, design products, and organizational performance. Included is the way knowledge theory manifests in three different professional settings: coaching and training, designing, and service settings. Knowledge management, although well established in interior design services, requires effort in coaching and training as motivation is a critical variable. Whereas, strategies for knowledge management vary from industry to industry given diversity in situational variables, knowledge in each professional setting can be significantly aided by capturing and storing empirical, tacit, and explicit information, providing real-time electronic storage and retrieval of information [5] and consistent with transformational theory, through opening communication channels across the full range of the organization, inspiring and motivating individuals, and aligning all members of the organization toward a common vision [8]. Professional settings discussed in this paper are:(a)an learning organization enumerated in KM; (b)designing factors for managing knowledge theory themes; and (c)service, effective, efficient, and innovative KM application that is relevant to the process of developing effective KM for interior design service organizations. Folded within each will be a discussion on KM’s impacts on visions, strategies, costs, and organizational performance. It has reiterated the impact of KM on one level might lead to synergistic impacts on another. Thus, KM has the potential to produce several interconnected impacts on people, design products, processes, and organizations.

        Leadership in Design Management by Prentice Hall's Self-Assessment

        This paper compares and contrasts four different kinds of leadership models in Design Management. Similarities and differences between these four models in contemporary leadership issues and challenges are analyzed and described. Each model will demonstrate the effects of leadership and how these leaders use the different approaches to develop their leadership style in their design field. This paper proposes that contemporary leadership in Design Management involves a unique bonding among leaders and followers, and more flexible and developed leadership will continue in the understanding and skill with which applying to the dynamic of organization change. The results and application of each model’s assessment indicate a team of leaders that are capable of achieving excellence through their combined talents and vision to achieve in design fields using their potential inability of their own leadership.

        New Paradigm of Systems Thinking and Action in an Interior Design Education Field

        The organizational theory and design in future encourages us to bring a fluid perspective to the problems and challenges face. Organizational structure, strategy, management style, teamwork, organizational change, and even products and services can be vitalized and re-formed through creative images that allow us to act in new ways. Leaders and educators sat all levels must gain comfort in dealing with the insights and implications of diverse perspectives. In a leadership paradigm in action, leaders and educators who have more flexibility and willingness to create a learning organization are successful in improving productivity and student empowerment. The key element to organizational structure and changes for interior design education becomes communications. Finally, we need to recognize that despite its roots in mechanistic thinking, organization is a creative process of imagination. We organize as we imagine, and it is always possible to imagine in new ways.
