Heungboksa Temple in Namkyung[Hanyang], Goryeo, was a royal temple located near the palace like Heungboksa Temple in Seogyeong[Pyungyang] so whenever the king and royal family visited Namkyung, they marched down and prayed. Yi Seong-gye moved the capital to Hanyang and promoted Heungboksa Temple for his teacher, Master Muhak, and decided it as the headquarters of the Jogye Order. It was a national temple and the royal family's original temple to the extent that Heungboksa Temple carried out National buddhism-event, a ritual for rain/clear and the royal family's jaeseung. In Joseon, where Confucianism was the ruling ideology, Heungboksa Temple also declined through the era of Sejong, and a government office called KuanseubDogam was established, and Akhak Dogam took its place. King Sejo, who raised a rebellion against the value of Neo-Confucianism, tried to build a strong monarch-centered country by relying on Buddhist ideology. For Sejo, who had to strengthen the royal authority while securing the legitimacy of the royal authority and restoring morality, the Buddhist miracle from the WongakBeophoe of Hoeamsa Temple became an important opportunity to make up for the political situation. Since Sejo was particularly interested in the Wongakgyeong, he took this opportunity to restore moral authority and secure legitimacy of the royal authority. Unlike Sejong, Sejo, who take care of political affairs in Changdeokgung Palace, must have wanted to build a Buddha hall again in Changdeokgung Palace because the Naebuldang of Changdeokgung Palace has already been moved to Gyeongbokgung Palace. In response, King Sejo will make up his mind to become a powerful monarch of his country as a Chakravartin through the re-prosperity of Buddhism by establishing a proper Buddhist temple at the site of Heungboksa Temple in front of Changdeokgung Palace, not a small Buddhist temple in the palace. Wongaksa Temple was the central base of the town where many people gathered to the extent that there was no place to stand when Suryukjae were performed at Sejong era. On top of that, King Sejo created Hangul metal type so that the people could actually read Buddhist scriptures, gave wealth to the people through Suryukjae, and made it a site of relieving the poor. At the center of such a series of processes was Wongaksa Temple. When King Sejo rebuilt Heungboksa Temple, he named it Wongak, and later Wongaksa Temple became the center of numerous national events as a national Buddhist temple and a royal memorial temple. Wongaksa Temple was the main base of activities of the central groups at that time. It was also a place where the Manmin Community was held when the woke people were the subjects of history in the chaotic days of the country at the end of the Joseon Dynasty, and under Japanese rule, it opened the banner of the Samil Independence Movement. Since then, it has been used as a rest park for the general public and has recently been used as a place to provide meals for the elderly and the homeless. In consideration of this vocation of the times, it is necessary to become a space where all people gather again and contain their hopes through the government-led sanctuary restoration project.
