The combination of activated sludge obtained from an electronic wastewater treatment system and Mycobacterium sp. TMAH-W0418 was investigated to biodegrade the low strength electronic rinse wastewater. In the flask batch study, 91.3% TOC removal of the synthetic wastewater by activated sludge, 98.9% TOC removal of the synthetic wastewater by activated sludge mixed with No. 2 strain isolated by using 100-fold diluted R2A medium and 67.3% TOC removal of the electronic wastewater by activated sludge mixed with Mycobacterium sp. TMAH-W0418 were achieved, respectively. The Mycobacterium sp. TMAH-W0418, a novel strain screened from activated sludge, was strongly capable of biodegrading TMAH (tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide) accounting for 40% of 5 ppm TOC of the wastewater (about 3000 kinds of carbonaceous matter contribute to the rest of TOC). Therefore, the high cell density cultivation of Mycobacterium sp. was developed to meet the requirement of the enormous amount of cells for the establishment of the fluidized bed reactor containing immobilized cells in the further study. The fed-batch cultivations were carried out with 1L initial working volume in a 2.5 L fermentor jar with the dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature and the consumption of substrate monitored and controlled during the cultivation process.
